Well that's the approach I have gone for in my non-passive, but well insulated renovation/extensions. I was going to go for an ASHP to cover me for the winter demands when my 3.8KWh PV is 'down', but now I have gone for two UniQ eDual cells (24KWh) to provide me with DHW and space heating (UFH). This will mean I am totally reliant on electric (and may go for Economy 7 meterage but didn't want to be forced to adopt a smart meter). I want to see how the house performs this winter and then adapt things next year if required. I may also opt for non-gridded solar PV installation later on.

But EVs ARE a load of crap!! Why? Cos the Daily Rag told me! I came across this today and found it hilarious: http://www.fullychargedshow.co.uk/previous-episodes/#/dail-mail-rant/

For anyone on the verge of committing to purchase a Sunamp unit, you may want to bite the bullet sooner than later: current 10% discount - or 20% for a fully-paid purchase by 29th June!
-
Yes, I thought I had a local branch....doh. Was getting confused with CEF! I just checked their (CPC) June specials cat online but none in there so will probably just order at this price anyway, as still affordable! I was going to order from China direct but a bit wary of safety concerns even though they are low-voltage etc.
-
I included wrong link (meant this CPC one) but that one you included @Onoff is even better priced. Thanks! Thanks PeterW for confirming. Will go into town today and see if they have a hardcopy catalogue that still has the better price in there.

Hi Peter - did you manage to locate the code? Were they these ones? http://www.discount-electrical.co.uk/product.php/402703471/enlite-en-pl06b-30-slim-fit-white-edge-lit-low-profile-commercial-led-downlight-with-warm-white-leds---remote-driver-ip44-6w-300-lumens-240v-dia----120mm---recess-depth--40mm---cut-out----107mm TS also now do these so will grab one today and inspect before I order them from CPC (as more ££): https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p56573

House energy use
oranjeboom replied to climbinggeorge's topic in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Design Concepts
Well hopefully there won't be any airco costs if the development has been thought through. EST may have some stats for you - probably worth dropping them an email: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/ -
Was referring to the LEDs - I thought those brackets were for screws. But now I get it: So perfectly easy to fit if they come with clips. I was thinking it would be a right PIA to fit the buggers. @PeterW Did you get these from fleabay/online? If they are WA* on your side then I will be halfway correct already. *Wife Approved✔️
-
@PeterW Thanks for the pics - that helps. I'll have to see how I can fix the LED unit into the plasterboard then as it appears it's a couple of screws 'sideways' that the bracket will slot into. Probably a couple of battens stuck to the underside of the PIR. Does each LED need a driver? And I guess they can be placed some distance from the LEDs? I was hoping to put them in an easy to get to location for future replacement rather then stuck between PIR and plasterboard.
-
Yeah, the only reason I asked about the temp is because I dropped my worklight this morning which dislodged the LED bulb and I noticed it was surprisingly hot. I now get the wife to write and date her decisions as 6months down the line she will either say we never discussed it or that she wanted option A, not B!
-
Thanks Dudda! I'll only have 37mm (ish) void space for the spotlights (12mm pb, 25mm batten space) so these look like an option. How hot does the one you have tested get?

Hi Peter....nudge nudge...☺️

Sounds all too familiar. If a trades(wo)man is taking the effort to communicate with you about the job, about arranging a time, taking the time to drive over, looking at the job on site, taking notes, then sometimes following up with more questions, why on earth don't they at least submit a quote where they surely know is massively over-priced? You've wasted everyone's time so at least try it on. I hate it when I have spent over and hour to wait on site for them to arrive, go over the job and then never to hear from them again - at least send me a quote that I can laugh over! With one of the ones that never got back to me, I publicly advised on someone on facebook not to bother with them after they'd been asking for opinions about this particular builder. I soon got a call from the builder who gave me some poor excuse as to why he never got back to me.

and a bit of tippex for those smoke stains. You really should try and give up on that dirty habit @Onoff!!
-
Thanks Peter, that'll be great. Hoping I can get away without faffing about on this one (VCL, cutting insulation etc). 28w - instructions from wife were "I want this area (hallway) really bright". Just following instructions. For once. Until I get the next set of instructions "These are too bright - why did you fit these???? I want something less harsh"
-
Hi Nick - just dragging this back to the surface. I'm just insulating a vaulted area and want to minimise cutting into PIR (or at all if possible). Looking to see whether it's possible to just batten underneath the PIR, then fit the PB and simply recess into that using LEDs that have minimal height. Which 'recessed' ones have you used in the past. Something like this? https://cdn2.ledhut.co.uk/media/productattachment/1/2110/DLSLIM12WNEW.pdf

Blinds for internorm sliders
oranjeboom replied to lizzie's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
@PeterStarck For your pleated porch blinds, how much do they compress to when fully pulled up at the top? That window is floor to ceiling height at 2.4m? For some windows I only have approx 40mm of window frame at the top and ideally I don't want the blinds hanging below that when fully 'up' (preference is to have the blinds within the window reveal). I'll probably have to go for a bigger pleat in order to reduce the 'compressed height' of the blinds I suspect. TIA! -
On a totally useless reply....Depends how long it takes to get your bathroom completed. You could have all manner of 'ingredients' in there during construction period...just look at @Onoff's bathroom thread. I imagine he's had a few ingredients in there over the years... On a serious note, limestone is porous and will suck in any spills and anything corrosive like Lemon I would be wary of. Also think of all the other items you will have in there like cleaners, hair dye etc. Limestone would have to be 'sealed' appropriately. I've come across some jura lookalike porcelain tiles as well that look pretty much like your polished jura.

Cold Flat roof - use liquid DPM underside of decking as a VCL?
oranjeboom replied to oranjeboom's topic in Flat Roofs
Joists are already in place and so is deck. Didn't have that option as the joists had to be a specific size and the whole structure had to be higher than the lintel on front door and also fit under the sloping roof of the bungalow. But I will also have PIR under the joists which I will have taped up to act as another VCL. I see that could happen with a standard VCL in the form of a sheet, where it may not stick to the underside of the deck. However, if I use a painted DPM instead, then surely no condensation can occur between the layer of painted DPM and the deck?- 6 replies

Due to circumstances I have ended up with a cold roof for front hallway/porch. During renovation of the old house, I noticed mildew on underneath of the decking due to condensation. There was quite a bit of humidity at the time when the old internal slab of the house was being dug up. Roof didn't have any insulation or VCL at this time so I can see how condensation occured between cold/warm surface of the roof deck. I'm now at the stage to insulate and plasterboard the flat roof and want to minimise any future risk. I will have a 50mm ventilation gap between insulation layer and also a VCL beneath insulation layer as in this pic: However, still a bit concerned about condensation underneath the deck itself, so was either going to stick some VCL/polysheeting directly under deck or use some liquid DPM instead: Painting on the DPM would be a lot easier and a bit safer as over time the spray adhesive with the VCL could fail causing the sheeting to come unstuck and block any airflow. Any cons for me for using a liquid DPM instead? I'd end up with 2 VCLs - good if the main VCL is punctured at some point (electrician / downlights).

insulation below steel column
oranjeboom replied to Simplysimon's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
If placed directly under column, insulation would be dependent upon direct point load. You could possibly stick some aerogel underneath the post which would have minimal compression. Placement of post on a marmox thermoblock or similar would be cumbersome in terms of fixing through the block and also not sure of loading ability. But plenty of options to insulate around steel posts with links as above and also here using aerogel:
