Timber frame passive standard build
Construction Channel replied to Scotrock's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
That would just ruin my fun of correcting people , it’s one of the things I remember from college that I thought might be useful in the future. Along with brainstorms offend epileptic people so they are now called “mind maps”....... -

Inspection chamber! Man hole is a very sexist term supposedly -
The things to consider are the price of the tool ( usually a lot of money although I have never seen the one in the video before) how often do they jam and how hard are they to “unjam” how tight do they get the fixing realistically how many ties are you going to have to put in. We have always used the pull twisty things everyone else has linked (locally called potato sack tiers) it all depends on available money and how much you want to use the fancy tool. If I could afford it I would get the best tool I could get and potentially sell its afterwards ( realistically it would just end up on a shelf.)

Bump Cap, or Hard Hat?
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Project & Site Management
Scaffold lifts are purposely measured so that if you wear a hard hat you hit every pole. ( probably not true but it seems to be the way) if you like the bump cap you wear it. Between you me and everyone else here I just wear a baseball cap and have done for the last decade or so. It stops the clips from tearing into your skin and generally keeps most of the crap out of my hair. As for hitting the poles I would advise not walking into them. -
Should I dwang my joists?
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Floor Structures
I was half joking when I said it. It’s slower than standard dwangs/noggins but it would make running cables easier. It’s more of a “traditional” way of doing things. One of those things I learnt in college but have only used once on a heritage renovation.- 18 replies

Selfbuild, a new career pathway?
Construction Channel replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
As long as you have the money to back the first project. There is nothing stopping you. But In real terms you will just be becoming a “developer”, I would do it myself if I could fulfill my first sentence ? -
I should think most of the bigger builds would use some kind of powder-coated metal to save on maintenance for their brise soleil, as for the cladding there is always the cement board alternatives e.g Hardi plank / Cedral. personally, I prefer the Cedral https://www.marleyeternit.co.uk/Facades/Cedral/Cedral-Lap.aspx https://www.marleyeternit.co.uk/Facades/Cedral/Cedral-Click.aspx

150mm http://www.cemex.co.uk/floor-installation-guide.aspx i did hear recently something about a max of 225 in case someone falls through but that could just be heresay. Edit: actually reading the link says you might get away with 75mm depending on soil type and location but I was always told 150

DIY mobile work plaftorm
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Tools & Equipment
4? surely if they are mobile you only need 1, 2 max -
also might be an idea to keep a full 3 phase plug available somewhere as I'm sure it will be helpful for charging cars in the not so distant future

I like that they changed the Blue, that nearly got me in trouble when I was wiring up the workshop, one box had both new, old and "farmer" wiring in it (3 browns and a blue) It all got very confusing

Well that Was a fun job. 500 of the little buggers every 400mm. (At least there will be when I get the utility done as well. But I’m tired and need a shower now) And just in case you wondered how I was going to hold it in the little chairs where it is trying to lift in some places I’m useing these. Technically they are for holding Teram down but they seem to be working well for this.

unless you can see anything shiny you havent gone through the outer plastic layer yet so hopefully you should be fine, but you should be careful when walking about on it, id be more worried about the mesh denting the pipe, cable ties are cheap though, how are you planning to keep them all in place without them?
