Hard wired I think? @PeterW ?

Could you not give this a go @lizzie? With the guys here holding your hand (in a virtual sense)? Your first real plumbing job? I had to change the dishwasher plumbing once (before this forum) as it was leaking. Took me a week of sending photos to my brother and lots of cussing but I did get it done and it hasn’t leaked yet ?.

My Touchscreen Controller has had an ongoing fault whereby the display sometimes shows a list of ? symbols and the date and time set back to a date in 2010 (potentially when the thing was commissioned). When that happens the heating comes on at random times. In order to reset it I have to switch the UH1 wiring centre off at the wall and then when I switch it back on it the settings reappear. Error view Normal view @PeterW suggested that it could need a new battery so I have changed it. The display still sometimes displays incorrectly however so I rang Heatmiser. The guy on the helpline says that the battery only maintains the date and time in the event of a power failure so the change of battery should help with that resetting itself (yet to ascertain if that has been fixed). He couldn’t explain why the controller showed ? symbols periodically but said that it could be due to the incorrect cable being used to connect the thing or if there was some interference somewhere, or possibly a fault with the controller itself. He had me check the network settings that imply that everything looks ok (according to him). He said that the only way of diagnosing the fault would be to get a sparky in as it might be a fault with the controller itself or elsewhere in the wiring system. If I’ve understood him correctly all the controller does is send an update to the room stat if something changes. So if the date or time changes the room stats will be updated to that date and time that can result in the heating coming on at odd times. If the battery change has fixed this then that’s all good. Other than that even if the display shows as ? if nothing has been altered the room stat should maintain its settings as normal because as soon as the display refreshes and shows normally again nothing has altered apart from the date / time (pre battery change). If this is correct and it’s as simple as just switching the thing off and on again I will leave it well alone I think. Have I understood this correctly please?

Just like a bloke to exaggerate length! ?

Well I guess your name is @Onoff and never so apt as it is now ... If I had known @Nickfromwales was just up the road I would have bribed him with Mcewans ?

Nope, I reckon you’ll be fine. As long as they have notice they shouldn’t care. Better to be safe than sorry.

+1 I would say the glass too.

Wow that seems a lot to do but all the good bits as you see real progress. Do be really careful after eye surgery though. I don’t know what you are having done but working in a dusty environment isn’t generally advised, and eyes are precious things.

? I thought you were supposed to be putting them back on? ??♀️

I had that in my old house and they used to scale the cavity and get out into the loft.

Building over a long period - Thoughts?
newhome replied to soapstar's topic in General Construction Issues
I extended my building warrant many times during the build. Sometimes I got a 6 month extension, other times it was 9 months, and once it was a year. I never knew why the timescales were different but the council seemed reluctant to allow a longer extension. The reason for the elongated build was not due to finances but because my husband became ill during the build and then it was left to me to finish it. The foundations were already in when I bought the plot as they had been put in by the builder who owned this plot and the one next door so he completed both sets of foundations together and he then completed the house next door and sold this plot with the foundations laid. There didn’t seem to be any question of the building regs being changed during that period. We were still building to the regs in place when the building warrant was issued. The council didn’t seem to be too worried about that aspect even though I only got the house signed off last year, some 10 years after the foundations were laid. Can’t comment on the mortgage aspect I’m afraid as I don’t have one. -
STROMA certification.

I don’t feel that people should be able to look things up in a test such as the ones in the link. It’s the sort of info that if you were properly trained you should know IMO as how many people will look things up mid install? You either know this stuff or you don’t. And knowing that you’re taking a test surely you’ve been revising too? You don’t get to take the Highway Code into the driving theory test. -
That’s when you realise that the self build is slowly driving you mad! ?

Are they doing it on purpose!!!

Fingers crossed you get a bit more progress made with your new guy. -
Welcome to BuildHub.

Yep I think that is right and should totally be dependent on those things rather than ‘at this age it’s unsafe’. At 12 I was pretty good at riding horses since I had been riding for 6 years by then, but skiiing or climbing, nah. Hell you wouldn’t even get me doing skiing or climbing as an adult.

Only one just now. If you’re in a position to buy get on with it whilst you are still dealing with the existing process. -

WTF!! ??? -
There are lots of activities that kids do that may have a higher risk associated with them than other things, eg horse riding in particular cross country events, skiing, cycling (BMX etc), climbing etc etc. Where do you draw the line? Are those activities less dangerous than say driving a tractor (I drove one at 14, it was old and I only drove it slowly)? Depends on many things including the personality/maturity of the kid too.

Crazy huh! I got 60% on the one I tried and can’t wire a plug ?. There’s something about the way they ask some of the questions that draws you to the correct answer. The ones I did badly on were the ones where there were pairs of numbers to choose from. With those you either know the answer or you don’t. -
Ah yes, it's weird how a car mag can provide an at least partial cure for man 'flu but you are so right!

I was jumping ponies at 12 and into my teenage years. Mostly cross country with a hard hat perched on for effect as no one used the stupid neck strap they came with. Fearless at that age. These days they have hats strapped on securely and wear back protectors. I’m not saying that’s wrong because no doubt it is safer and I wouldn’t be nearly so reckless now as I was then, but it highlights a change in attitude to risk / safety.

Oh totally! My sympathy level is evidenced by my second most favourite phrase at work SIUB or ‘suck it up buttercup’ ?.

+1 (at the time). Plus we did get a couple of rooms completely finished so that we could move in. kitchen / family room became kitchen, lounge, bedroom, dining area for a while. We stored all of the remainder of our belongings in what was to be the formal lounge in the knowledge that we wouldn’t be able to finish it for a while (it needed painting, flooring, skirting etc still). Can you not force them to complete at least 1 room so that you can shut it off and use? I sympathise and @Hecateh is sharing the same joy just now.
