energy... I stand to be corrected.
Ferdinand replied to Big Jimbo's topic in New House & Self Build Design
For some reason @JSHarris is reminding me of Sir Richard Mottram: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2002/mar/03/labour.byers To wit: “The permanent secretary at the DTLR (Department of Treachery, Lies and Resignation - lack of one, in the case of Stephen Byers) has booked himself an entry in dictionaries of modern political quotations. Displaying the dry understatement, smooth urbanity and coolness in a crisis for which our alpha civil servants are so renowned, Sir Richard Mottram, Knight Commander of the British Empire, turned to a fellow mandarin and howled: 'We're all fucked. I'm fucked. You're fucked. The whole department's fucked. It's been the biggest cock-up ever and we're all completely fucked.'” F -
So plant some trees and wait ?. Or get a car that comes with a brolly pocket in each front door, complete with brollies ?. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9eplEBb4m5E

If it is like a sea wall can you put a overhang along the back of your upstand? Something like a wooden batten, or some sort of L profile or gutter mounted upside down, on the back? If it is too big there are shed gutters. Perhaps you need to experiment?

There will be a section in The Local Plan all about that. It was a clock-up sustainability analysis which caused our LPA to drop our land out of the Plan, which was one reason we went for a rapid Application back in 2012. -
The real solution is to grow a shelter belt or barrier round the other end. The short term way may be an upstanding is or some sort of thing on the roof, to stop the water or diffuse the wind. I guess you could so something that looked like a Breeze (!) Soleil that would help, or some invisible thing on the roof, which would really be a bit of a bridge. F

There is also a language / marketing question. "Meets the Building Regs" is often translated into "Build to the latest environmental standards" in the literature. Ferdinand -
Different coloured dyes should do that?

I think it may be beneficial to go through that list ... which looks like a boilerplate list,, and see if you can pre-emptively demonstrate why certain aspects do not require to be done, or have been already addressed. That may reduce the work for your ecologist, and may save money or queries. eg It may be a good thing to have identified how your site will work, so as not to threaten the canal. Once thIngs get into the planning database, they will raise to the surface again. So take care what you tell people or planners. Ferdinand

Appliances Direct - Electriq - any experiences?
Ferdinand replied to Radian's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
it’s a LiebHerr, pronounced Lee-Bear, and it probably would store a medium size bear. If you leave it on super freeze by mistake, the freezer is at about -30 by the morning. As for large, hairy men... ???. Ferdinand -
Appliances Direct - Electriq - any experiences?
Ferdinand replied to Radian's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
@Radian I cannot comment on the item, though I have a tenant who bought an air conditioner from them last summer during the very hot period. I am a couple of miles from their warehouse, and they have that and a 4-500 Sqm showroom nea m1j28; my bear-fridge was an ex-demo from there. I have been buying from there for a few years, and I would trust their own brands as much a S any others. I have a couple of own brand 5 burner gas hobs, which have been in student houses since 2012 and we’re not going expensive. Not sure whether I have used the Electroniq brand, however. I put a non branded ceramic hob and hood in the Little Brown Bungalow project from there, but they were their unmarked own brand. They do not negotiate very far in price ? . My only success was an extra 10% off the ex-demo fridge, and I think free delivery when I ordered a lot of appliances, ie 8 or 10, at once. They may have a good value extended warranty, but I think those have gone. Ferdinand -
I wonder if it is possible to negotiate any of that away by arguing (or stating in the report, agreed with your ologists in advance) NO CHANGE. One hint ... be aware of all the reports you need, and that it may be possibly for your ecologist to do a bat evaluation at the same time, and perhaps a Tree Evaluation. You could try a very brief report, written personally: ”No life was detected except an alligator in the canal, which unfortunately ate the Ecologist”. F

Thanks. The calculations are in the Regs and I think I would meet the exclusion, but I am not disposed to spend a couple of days or £250 proving it which is a theoretical requirement. So I may patch and do basic normal masonry paint. That should give me 7-8 years and once once leanto roof is up it can be repainted relatively painlessly. Ferdinand

Insulation Material Price Comparison Value/Money
Ferdinand replied to Patrick's topic in Heat Insulation
There are some limits to how reliably you can find the optimum on this, and parts of your model will need to be approximated or adjustable on the fly. Two are 1 You need to model variable or specific-to-you prices. For any item or type of insulation prices may be plus or minus at least 30%, and the Price you get may be at different points. No one can give you that info. 2 Even within one material the physical form may affect the price and the install cost, independent of the R value. Eg the size or thickness with most production. Analogous to 18mm osb always being the best value perm. So some aspects need to be changeable. F -
How long are those hinge pins? Stackowashers?

Are we back to merkins again?

So what happened to this gate and why does it need to be 50mm higher? And is this problem dealt with, now?

Option 6 after fixing it, which I will have to add to the Construction Cocktails page. The Forget-me-Shot. From the Simpsons. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi7e8mWV0Ec

To add to this a little. I have had a poke around in a few places. If we consider social media as forum, email, twitter, pinterest, instagram, youtube, podcast, facebook, linkedin it seems that people build out from their background or starting point, and used some media but not usually everything they can. They tend to stick to their knitting, and use other channels *to an extent* to increase footprint. The people with an existing esablished base (TV, newspaper columnists etc) tend to stay identified as individuals - rather than say businesses or services. They have professional services doing stuff for them. People who have built a significant presence without such a base are rarer, and it takes a lot of time and/or effort. They seem to use a wider range of services. Examples and Questions: TV types (eg Phil Spencer) have a large Twitter presence, and usually Instagram / Pinterest, with various dabblings and name donation to paying sponsors on eg Youtube. I am quite interested in how well Ben Adam-Smith (House Planning Help) has done, because he has grow his network from his skillbase as a independent media-producer type person, thugh he now calls hisself a "Self-Builder" on Linkedin. He has used podcast (250 off - 1000+ hours of work) on a Premium Service model, and grown a small community of paying subscribers around that who are mainly mentees, and have access to extra material, and sells services such as training courses. Some features similar to parts of the Patreon model, though that is more altruistic. I think we have one or two mentees here. For a third, Ultimate Handyman, which is a limited company run out of Preston, and is basically a forum, has used Youtube extensively, but only have a smallish Facebook presence, and uses Pinterest well, but seemingly not Instagram. Is anyone aware of Interior Designers who have a significant following on Instagram? F

@recoveringacademic Excellent response ?. Especially as I am the one always asking for their objectives from newbies. The question was quite deliberately open, as I have not focused it yet. This question is a conversation ! More usefully, the immediate end-in-mind is To repurpose content I have created here and elsewhere on my own resource. That has lots of elements to it. Which leads to the first two of many questions, these thinking about the form of such a resource and the way to set it up wrt to technology and integration of online services: 1: What will, in 2020, a beneficial, conversation generating online resource look like? 2: How can the 2019 internet be best used to generate such conversations? And the question for this thread which is a starting point: Which examples of resources around self-build, construction, design use the contemporary internet effectively? How do they do this If you want to move this thread to the members only forum, that is fine. Ferdinand

Slightly specialist. Can anyone point me to any blogs or websites in the self-build, construction or design space which are making good use of Social or Distributed Media. By social media I mean eg Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, mayber Twitter, Reddit, Youtube etc. I am after examples of sites rather than "howtos". Cheers Ferdinand

Hello everyone. 4 years in and two architects later...exasperation
Ferdinand replied to Stu-UK's topic in Introduce Yourself
This may well be possible, but be prepared for things such as long lead times for TF suppliers - which may make you decide between your favourite house and rapid progress. The Time-Cost-Quality triangle applies in spades to self-build You only get two at once at the cost of the third. https://www.projectsmart.co.uk/project-management-scope-triangle.php And welcome. "Ooops" is very useful. But I once said "Ooops" when I had made a mistake in a team building exercise, and I got a distinct impression that it was insufficient self-abasement. Umpteen apologies and bootlickings were apparently expected, and I think they would have been happier if I had done a self-imposed Joan of Arc solution. Like a forerunner of modern politics. Crowd-sourced Welsh suggestions here. F
