Flue liner for larger chimney, necessary or not?
PeterW replied to tomfc's topic in Stoves, Fires & Fireplaces
Stove fitter is wrong. You need a 5-6” flue coming off the stove itself but that can increase to 9” with no issues in concrete or clay liners. Depending on how the chimney and stove are laid out, you either use a register plate which is a big horizontal plate of steel with a hole though it, or a clay adapter which looks like a stainless cone with two ribbed straight sections that match the stove outlet size and your chin bet size. Technically you can fit your own but it needs signing off by building control. You must fit a stove plate near the stove with the correct details about the flue, but they are not difficult to do if you take your time. You may need to ensure it’s on you Building Regs application too so it gets signed off with the build. -
Do they actually document that ..??!

High salt content does cause issues with some treatment plants but it’s in much larger quantities than a domestic unit will put out. The biofilm doesn’t respond to different brands detergents - that is an old rumour. The levels of detergent do cause the problems and they say you should try not to do a “wash day” where you dump 5 or 6 loads of washing through the system and instead spread it over a week as it can both dilute the tank and also increase chemical levels.

MVHR Calculations
PeterW replied to john0wingnut's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Those convert to the boost rates for the minimum required for the Building Regs - nothing scientific about it. -
Choice of ASHP for near-passivehouse
PeterW replied to DInwood's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
@DInwood Alpha is part of the Nibe group so been around a while. The Innotec units are all new - use propane as a refrigerant and pretty sure they call come with a buffer as standard which is a plus. Downsides are they have a single U.K. distributor so don’t expect pricing to be in line with LG/Panasonic/Mitsubishi. Also means support is limited and technical documents are thin on the ground. Make sure your plumber isn’t specifying just because his favourite supplier has an offer on .. -
That’s not a 5” flue it’s an 8” twin wall so no clearance enlargement needed. the 5” stub can go straight to the stove. @JB2020 just get a length of 5” stove pipe and remember in the U.K. they all go inside top to bottom to stop condensate running out of the joints. Leave it at 5” as it will draw better on a short flue, you may need a damper though which you can get from Chimsoc If you need advice then give them a call as they are really helpful.

Weird .... I assume you’ve tried rhe “turn it off and on again..??” from the power ..? -
Siemens IQ700 Ovens Stuck in Demo Mode Help
PeterW replied to canalsiderenovation's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
1. Press on/off button 2. Press the “Heating mode” button. 3. Turn selector switch until top/bottom heating is displayed 4. Press the > button 5. Turn selector switch until 30 °C is displayed 6. Press key button for 4 sec 7. Now press the on/off button again. (From Siemens apparently..!!) -
So those are Emmeti CS17 stats ... if they are calling for heat then a little flame appears top right on the screen. There is a way to get them to show the room temperature - that’s the set temperature currently.

Yes and no ..! An accumulator gives you 50% usable storage so a 200 will give you 100 litres, 300 will give you 150 litres etc. The issue will be when you get two showers running - and it may even depend on the shower itself. If you had 2 showers at 9 litres / min, the accumulator will support the flow rate in RussDLs case of an additional 3 litres / min so will run for circa 30 mins. Up the showers to 12 litres / min and you’re going to be using a 200 litre accumulator in 12 minutes. This is where bigger is better, but that comes with cost and space requirements. Also, a lot of clients don’t know what they want at the outset of doing design and first fix when it comes to shower specifications so it does have an element of guesswork to it, so unless you spec “I want to support 2 Mira Digital xyz showers and one has body jets” when you’re asking for a design then it is sometimes more art than science. @Triassic do you know what showers you want and how many at once ..?

@JB2020 that is a 125mm to 8” twin wall adapter. You need one to match your stove pipe coming off the stove so need to know that first. Would recommend these guys https://www.chimsoc.co.uk/shop/Twin-Wall-Flue-125mm-Single-Wall-to-Twin-Wall-Adaptor.html#SID=66

What profile do you want ..? Got a catalogue in the car I think

You can see from that photo that the tiles don’t come over the edge of the flashing properly so it’s basically coming in that way. If it’s all coming off then get a tube of gutter sealant and smear onto the nail hole as it will stick to anything including wet surfaces.

Where is it measured ..? Ground floor tap will be slightly lower than first floor shower but not much. Most suppliers do high and low pressure heads for showers and they are easily interchangeable so you can get a decent pressure along with flow too. Is this all off a UVC ..? If you haven’t already done them, pipe the WCs in 10mm off a branch with the outside tap prior to the PRV and then do everything else as balanced off the PRV. Means if someone flushes a loo you won’t get a cold shower.

Howdens currently just over £1.20/m and it’s 4.2m lengths so can’t see how anyone can do cheaper than that.

Can an individual loop on a manifold be isolated?
PeterW replied to Nick1c's topic in Underfloor Heating
Depends on the actuator. The wax ones on the NuHeat manifolds I think are spring loaded and close if you take the head off. That’s why you can’t use the Salus self balancing actuators with them. -

PeterW replied to Nick1c's topic in Underfloor Heating
Ok - good to hear ..! LSX won’t seal it but that tape will. Other option is turn the flow reg right down and take the actuator off as that “should” from memory shut the circuit off -

Sorry but this is the stairlift company’s issue to resolve not yours ..! If they didn’t take due care to survey the site then it’s their problem. Get an emergency plumber out and get the stairlift company (or their insurer) to pick up the bill. -
Sorry who is paying her bill..?? If any specifier or designer started to tell me as a client that I had to do something (which you don’t ...) and won’t follow client instruction then I would be off like a shot. All of the Twyford taps for example come with screw in aerators that can be changed for different coloured low flow ones - quick and simple and designed for varying usages. Sounds like your designer has a very insular view of what is acceptable.

Airtightness test
PeterW replied to Mandana's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
@Mandana some of that seems to be your builder fixing problems and supporting the test. Saying that, the test price seems high too. -
The interface is really simple - it is a pair of contacts on the FTC. This thread discusses exactly what you are trying to achieve

Static or dynamic ..? That is fairly low, what is the flow like..?

Adding a Buffer Tank to Ashp Setup
PeterW replied to Scotland's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Yep agree - manifold and pump every time. -
Adding a Buffer Tank to Ashp Setup
PeterW replied to Scotland's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
But rads don’t care and can be sized at ASHP output temperature so that’s £100 per manifold in the kitty ? Although I am getting deja vu about fitting remote pumps on manifolds....... Pass me a McEwans...!! ? -
Ok so I have no idea the last time someone checked a flow for Part G... and I just fit tap restrictors and the same with showers at the heads. Someone comes along and removes them a week later, what do I do..? ??♂️
