Help with kitchen renovation/ 1st house.
Onoff replied to zoothorn's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Gut feel is that the mice might be getting into the cavity somewhere then coming inside thru that bfo hole as it looks well sealed outside. Always unpleasant. That will need blocking up with a carefully bolstered lump of brick NOT FOAM! You could even break up a glass bottle when you mix your mortar up to fit the brick. Mind your fingers! (A lot of the old places down here have an over site of broken glass before a weak floor slab went down). Mice can get thru a hole the diameter of a pencil. Those pipes thru the close fitting holes in the cupboard back panel probably did you a favour! Is the floor there concrete? Are the rest of the floors concrete or suspended timber floors? Have a bloody good clean up / disinfect. Block the hole up then take stock. -

Bath Surround / Boxing In, and concealed pipework

Does "50mm" on these solvent weld ABS fittings refer to the nominal bore? The internal dia of this elbow is 55/56mm. On the outside it says "Plumb Centre CB3 55 (2) 88.5deg" yet it's marketed as "50mm". https://www.wolseley.co.uk/product/center-cb3%3Ab-abs-knuckle-bend-8850-deg-50-mm/ I'm going to buy a load from here to tidy up my existing / new wastes so as not to suffer Plumb Centres pi$$ taking prices: https://www.drainagepipe.co.uk/ -
The "mosaics" are indeed one big tile 400x250. They're a solid tile not on a flexible mat. I want to cut them at nom 125mm as shown: I want to preserve the pseudo grout line that ends at 125mm. That will butt up to the tile trim around the window. Remember these are cheap ceramics, that grout line is just a thin glaze. Worried that scribing and snapping and it'd shell up that edge exposing the brown substrate of the tile. I could wet cut but the line won'd be straight. A third option is the 255mm diamond blade in the Evolution Rage 3 chop saw. I don't think though you are meant to use the slide action when cutting tile though..... Just realised I need to cut these at nom 120mm! The mosaic strip needs a "real" grout line either side there.

Every night and crushed concrete will still excite me! I love the whole upcycling, water into wine, where there's muck there's brass thing. I swear to God I look at cow pats in the road and think "That's a potential fuel source that is!". I think the trouble with "us" as a forum, the wider society etc is that we don't go far enough. Great to build a low energy home but why stop there. Look at LA's fining individuals for putting waste into the wrong bin then sending it all to landfill anyway. It's all skewed. Everything has a value from grass cuttings to horse manure yet people who are into compost heating are still perceived as on the fringe.- 192 replies

They've been known to travel a lot further for free beer & pies I believe..... The Mongolian Yak wool dig...what utter BS that is. From what I can make out most on here go the pir route. The eco warriors inhabit the GBF! Really interesting piece in the Passive House mag about how raft type foundations are finding favour with "traditional" builders as the materials can be strictly costed and ordered which you can't do with a trench. Also the labour can be less costly than a traditional build e.g you don't need say a time served "brickie" etc to lay sheets of eps, erect pre built walls or pump foam.- 192 replies

Look at what's already being passed on here by builders sharing experiences of what went wrong with e.g their slab pours. Others following on benefit from this immensely whether it be by being better equipped knowledge wise, stricter with their overseeing of contractors or just being mentally prepared for what can go wrong when it does.- 192 replies

WTF would you want to? I live in a traditionally built house and have seen / been in a non traditional timber framed one to Passive standards. I know which one I'd rather live in. And that builder did a huge amount of the work himself. To be fair if ever I did my own I'd want a brick / stone skin but that's easily achievable.- 192 replies

What you need is a big shed to store stuff in...to stop it getting wet... Seriously you took 8 years on the house so the shed needs to compliment it and look a bit "special" I'm thinking!
