  1. I see that Bath Store have entered administration.
  2. One of my MVHR systems is going in a loft space and the design shows an inlet and outlet ducts routed through the slate roof. As I’ve never installed such a system before, could someone point me in the direction of the correct duct fittings I need to install in the slate roof? The roof is counter battened, not sure if that matters or not!?

  3. I know a bloke in the pub, mind you is it even worth the effort!
  4. I’ve installed fire-stops vertically around the building at the intersections of internal walls, so the kitchen is isolated from the dining room, which is isolated from the stairs etc. I’ve also installed fire stops around each of the windows. The BCO is visiting on Monday, I’ll ask him then what he thinks of my efforts so far.
  5. What about Timber Frame and exterior cladding?
  6. I’m at the cladding stage on my timber frame construction. Following the Grenfell disaster I changed from larch to fibre cement Cedral cladding and part renderboard and render. The TF company supplied lengths of fire stop, insulation in a red plastic sausage. Where does it go within the wall build up?
  7. That’s a better price. Mine are pre-glazed, so I need fixings for all of them.
  8. I assume that’s £6.60 each? I’ll nip into town later and see what you get for £6.60.
  9. Too late, the cladding is nearly done and the windows are still in manufacture. I’ll look at batt straps, I was also wondering about builders band, the perforated stuff on a roll? Im going to need around 200 fixings, so ideally they need to be value for money!
  10. My timber Ali-clad windows are due soon so I need to order all the fixings required to install them. What sort of straps should I be using and how many fixings per window / door (2.4m wide)? Do they just fix at each side or do you need them for the top and bottom rail?
  11. It’s so good we’ve just ordered a second one. The joy of membrane placement!
  12. Is your SUDS working, looking at the news many will be put to the test.
  13. Thanks everyone, I chose the photo as an example of the type of construction of the single strings staircase. We’ve not even looked at handrails or spindles. To my mind to pass the 100mm sphere rule, I’d need either an upstanding or down stand at the rear of the tread, shouldn’t be too difficult to achieve. Other examples of steel single stringer stairs and comments cost or on the ease of DIY manufacture and assembly most welcome.
  14. Hence the question, what design is compliant?
  15. We have three floors in our new build and I need to find a quick and relatively cheap method of constructing staircases. I was thinking of constructing three basic L Shaped staircases using a box steel stringer with tread fixings welded to the spine. These will then be covered with timber treads, similar to the photo. Has anyone got any experience of constructing such things, any design pointers, best practice and indicative costs?
  16. Isn’t that called Leasehold? Hardly a vote winner, Neither is ‘keep the poor, poor and the rich, rich’! Come to think about it, the trickle down effect didn’t work either.
  17. So the roof of the tower is nearly complete, the slates are in and all we need now is the lead man to do the hips.

    Drive matting

My brother has pebbles on his drive, the only good thing is he can hear people walking up the drive, mind you, he lives in a paper thin house! My eco warrior says use road planeings for the drive?
  19. I read that the Police have started taking statements under caution. Will we ever get to the truth ?
  20. I checked this out with the roofer. He’s diminished the courses faster than normal, as this is a short roof plane next to a long roof plane. He tells me that once the scaffold is removed and you can see both roof planes side by side, “ they will look right”.
  21. Mine the same, only visited to inspect half the drains and then for the first stage of the foundation pour, I’ve emailed him since to tell him about the frame going up, he asked for all the structural calcs. I’ve not seen him since.
  22. If your designing a new house on a large lot, think about how it would work if you wanted to extend in the future.
  23. Wow, they look great, A very nice job.
  24. £5000, how much and what they made of? I’m just about to start mine, so curious.
  25. agree the scope of work, put it in writing and both sign the piece of paper, get a signed copy each, file away and forget, job done. After all you are both good neighbours, aren’t you? No need for legal stuff for a water pipe!?
