Has anyone done this or is it just stuff of TV house programmes? Please share your stories of how it went.

I’ve been putting off updating my “actual costs” spreadsheet and have accumulated around six months invoices and receipts. It’s taken me five hours to print them all off, enter the details into my VAT reclaim spreadsheet and to then file them in date order. The good thing is, I’m on target to finish the whole build at around £1150 per metre square. All I need to do now is get a local estate agent to value the place to see if it’s been worth the effort so far and if it’s worth upping the internal specification a tad to maximise final value, not that I’m gone to sell, just interested !?

I’m told that the majority of Ali-clad windows are made overseas. I suspect a lot of the PVC profiles are also imported and then glued together here. Glad to say I’m about 50% complete in my self Build, so the Plutocrats won’t be getting much more of my money.

I still haven’t got round to cleaning the oak beams yet ! Not enough hours in the day ! I want wondering about soda blasting, has anyone done any DIY soda blasting and did it clean the marks off the oak?

I’ve done renovations and new builds, Knocking it down and starting again is the cheapest option!

Should I buy this autofeed screwdriver for plasterboard?
Triassic replied to Roz's topic in Tools & Equipment
Me and the labourer have just driven 2500 screws over the last two days. I hammer the screw in about 50mm and he followed on and drove them home. Not sure you need a collated driver for a self Build. -
Self build costs - those who used their own labour
Triassic replied to rh2205's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I’m self building most of my house myself, I’ve had labour in to put the frame up, slate the roof, do the rendering and nstall the 46 windows and doors (how did I ever end up with 46 of them!). In the near future I’ll be finished outside and will move inside. I’ve got an electrician lined up and I’m paying mates rates, after that, I’ll be getting a plasterer in to do all the plastering. I’m budgeted to finish the 380m2 house for around £1000/ m2. I’ve worked on the build full time, 7:30 to 18:00 five days per week. Occasionally I’ll work longer if I have deadlines to meet. I’m not sure I could do a day job as well as self Build, those who do, have a whole new level of dedication and I take my hat off to them. -
Exterior CCTV camera advice needed

I’m now considering what to install permanently in the new house, as we're at first fix stage starting next month. -
Wireless Internet connection

It’s probably the neighbours piggy backing off your WiFi lol. -
I’m cladding to finish just above there the soffit goes. My reasoning is that I’ll have a nice clean edge that is easier to cut in the soffit board rather than the cladding. Ive used DPC as the flashing over windows and doors, this is stapled and the taped into place over the breather membrane. Let me know if you find any decent videos!

I’ve often wonder about the effect of warming on a magnetic field ? https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0207270 https://phys.org/news/2014-05-earth-magnetic-field-important-climate.html

+1 The outside work is nearing completion and then it’s inside for first fix electrics, so this is a topic of interest.

Academic papers, excellent, feel free to list them. I’m at the point where I agree with Greta, we need to take action now, so if you're unsure about climate warming you need to read up about it and start taking action. https://skepticalscience.com/97-consensus-study-hits-million-downloads.html

So there’s only two of us reading up about climate change?

I have two black bins dotted around the house, every bit of waste goes into them and every two weeks I fill black bin bags and stuff them into our domestic waste wheels bin, the bin man empties the bin without question. I compost all cardboard and paper.

Sounds like the Grange Over Sands tip. Only open three days a week and conveniently hidden up a narrow track between two houses and not sign posted!

I’m currently reading a book about climate change called “The Uninhabitable Earth”. Can anyone recommend any other well written and factually correct books or literature on climate change? Thanks

I had something similar last month, I got a letter stating that the inspector hadn’t been for over 12 months and could I call the office to arrange a visit. Interestingly their information was incorrect as I’d had a visit in March, where I’d been asked to supply structural calculations and I had the emails to prove the point. I’m assuming the high turn over of staff, I’ve had six different people visit, most of whom have now left, resulted in poor record keeping. My advice is to keep a record of all visits, maybe even to the extent of emailing the inspector after the visit to confirm what he’s looked at and what was agreed.

I read n the news that - New figures out today show installations this quarter at the lowest level since 2010, a 98% drop compared to average 2015 levels. looks like it’s only few new builders who are installing solar!

Roof Slates weird after Velux installation... ???

Roof Slates weird after Velux installation... ???
Triassic replied to Repsac's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
To check you have the correct flashings you should be looking for a red symbol on the box. The Velux frame fixing brackets must the be fixed to the bottom for the red flashing kit. https://velcdn.azureedge.net/~/media/marketing/uk/brochures/installer_handbook.pdf -
Roof Slates weird after Velux installation... ???
Triassic replied to Repsac's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
I think the slates are the correct way up, If you zoom in you can see the rivets further up the roof. i agree, it’s all down to the position of the flashings, causing the slates to kick. -
Beating Lindab into shape.
Triassic replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Rainwater, Guttering & SuDS
I’m waiting with baited breath for an update on progress. How about a @Construction Channel style video of work in action!? PS. Lindab, you must be loaded lol.... -
So assuming we on BuildHub declare a climate emergency, what should be on the list of positive actions we could, or should, take when renovating or building new property? I’m thinking a bit of an @AnonymousBosch style checklist
