I'm now at the stage where I need to install the UFH system (pipes are already designed and in), hot water (first fix complete - H&C pipes from manifolds to taps installed), ASHP and buy and install a Sunamp (sized, just need to buy it). Oh, and install the solar panels, the inverter and Eddi unit. Digging back through all my plumbing and heating notes and drawings, I'd had an idea to install something similar to the system Jeremy Harris designed for his place. I've now found that Jeremy and his House at Orchard Mill web site have gone off line. Has anyone got any current bast practice layout drawings, or web site links, they could point me to? I work best when I have a drawing, rather than a written description!

So have I. The insulation is on my job list (very long job list). However I need to get the plasterboard finished, so its come up the priority list.
-
I'm installing my own. All i need now are all the bits as the plant room is finished and ready for me to start ! @LA3222 what sort of system/layout are you going for?
-
I agree, just very annoying that I only get adverts for overpriced rubbish, when all I want is adverts for competitively priced ASHPs!!!
-
Remind me, which of the ducts (Inlet or outlet) needs to be insulated?
-
I’m also self building and my costs to date are £1080/ m2 and I’m hoping to finish at around £1100. I’ve done a lot myself. My advice is to keep the design simple and plan the routes for things like plumbing, electrics, mvhr and ASHP. The shorter the runs the lower the cost. A centrally located plant room is the ideal.

Interestingly many of these adverts have negative comments about system performance and increased running costs. ill be installing my own ASHP system. Just need to get a cheap ASHP next. Anyone seen any for sale?
-
I keep getting adverts suggesting I replace my gas boiler for a ASHP system. The latest suggests the ASHP costs over £4k and a total system would cost around £10k installed. £10k sounds way too much, is this a case of rip off Britain ?

Wow - Are Exterior doors really that expensive?
Triassic replied to Triassic's topic in Doors & Door Frames
I’ve also had quotes from Rockdoor. Front door £2478 and back door £1158 inc fitting. As these doors are black in colour, has anyone had problems with delamination, caused by the heat build up in the black door? -
I’ve just got the quotes in for a Solidoor front and back door. Wow £2600 for the front door and £1600 for the back door. I hadn’t realised Composite doors were so expensive!

One video I looked at the bloke used what looked like a Large plastic door wedge, I might make something similar out of timber and give it a try. -
Rationel - Removing Ali-clad exterior trim
Triassic replied to Triassic's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I’ve found how to get the glass unit out, but not how the remove the Ali-clad trim. I really don’t want destruction ! -
Unfortunately one of the builders dropped a hammer off the scaffold and it bounced off part of the scaffold on its way down and cracked the glass, in one of my Rationel Ali-clad windows, fortunately it’s one of the small panels of glass.. The question is, how is the Ali-Clad exterior trim removed from the window to get the glass out? Any ideas?

The form says the maximum export should be limited to 3.68KW per phase utilising a Type approved EREC G100 device what is a Type approved EREC G100 device? -
My self build is coming along nicely, however it’s been a few years since I decided to include solar panels. I’ve now got all the kit on site and need to get it installed in the next few months. Can one of you knowledgable people remind me of the official paperwork I need to submit and the whom? It’s being installed by myself and wired up by the qualified electrician.

Has anyone imported doors from Italy, they oriduc3 some stunning internal and exterior doors.

I need a front and back door. I’ve looked online but I’m struggling as the openings are none standard sizes. Also we’d like something modern, solid, laminated etc. Ideally we’d also like to see an actual door, feel the quality etc, before we buy. Anyone in Lancashire or Cumbria got any suggestions where to go and see real doors?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. LPG and 12v lights etc sounds like a workable solution.

Here’s a bit of a challenge! I’ve been asked to prepare a design brief for an off grid toilet block on a Scout camp. I’m thinking a concrete raft, block walls, pitched roof, containing 4 self contained toilets with wash sink in each. As it’s off grid I’m struggling to come up with a design for the hot water. Anyone got any suggestions?

According to the Eddi manual I can extend the signal cable using twisted pair telephone cable or CAT5. Just a thought, should the cable be the shielded type? Also any tips on installation and separation distance from power cables.

We’re looking at flooring for the bedroom and can’t decide between real wood or laminate. We’ve got real wood floors in our current house and they show every mark. Would we be better with laminate or are there any of the modern real wood (engineered timber) floors worth considering?
