  1. We’ve started to look at Porcelain floor tiles, wow these things aren’t cheap, quotes are coming in at around £49/m2 (supply only). l just wanted to check if this within the competitive price range, or if the “self build“ or “National Park“ premium is in play?! ps. Are Porcelain tiles all made the same, how do you spot a quality tile as opposed to a cheap one?
  2. The first fix is complete and over a brew the electrician says, how you dealing with weather compensation? Something else I don’t know the answer to! I assume it’s some sort of weather / temperature sensor on the end of a cable placed on the exterior of the house? Which side (N,S,E or W) of the house, sunny or shaded spot, ground level or eves? Cat5 cable or something else? Help me out here!
  3. Ask the Building Society what they require, then ring round solicitors and get the best price. The BS may let you use a conveyancer, who might be more competitive. It not called Grand designs for nothing. Ps.. Don't forget to mention you're shielding due to Corvid19, I’m told it helps them think more clearly!
  4. Send your site plan showing the agreed boundary to Land Registry to be appended to the tittle deeds. Remember that lines on old maps, depending on the thickness of the pencil used to draw the line, can often be 500mm or wider if drawn to scale on the ground.
  5. We did one at work. Back filled with 100 stone and every 500mm fill the void spaces with Cement grout. Once stabilised old mine workings Using the same technique.
  6. Thanks everyone, Sunamp we’re more than helpful in resolving the issue. For those considering a Sunamp, they have published a list of their approved distributors, re-sellers and installers https://www.sunamp.com/sunamp-resellers-installers Sunamp were quick to point out that using a company not on the approved list more than often results in problems, as was the case for me.
  7. Apparently the local BM is importing plaster from Ireland, but customers are complaining as it works differently and goes off too quick.
  8. I was wonder if anyone else has had problems getting Sunamps delivered? I’ve emailed and messaged their distributor numerous times, all I get is excuses! Does anyone have a contact at Sunamp who could help get this sorted?
  9. Yes, talked to them, they buy in bulk and it’s all thick stuff, 20mm and thicker. Phoned their supplier and the thinnest they do is 18mm. I need 9mm!
  10. I’ve got four Youngerman boards where the plywood working surface is worn out. The surface appears to be 9mm phynolic plywood (dark brown in colour and resin bonded). I’ve tried locally to get a few sheets and failed. Most BMs appear to be limiting their range of products as made things easier in these difficult times. Can anyone suggest a reputable online supplier?
  11. Everything! I have employed subbies for the timber frame, brickwork, plastering, electrics and installing the windows. I’ve worked alongside them all to save money.
  12. I was thinking of using the power of Ethernet ones. Our build is L shaped, so one in each end of the L and one in the middle.
  13. As the electrician is in isolation I’m having to do a few bits of installation myself. I’m installing three WiGi access points around the house, what spec of cable is required and how many core?
  14. I did my own insulated raft foundation. I did the whole job myself, the only bit I had help with was the placement of the concrete. I got a local man with a concrete pump to help. Why the piles? Where is the insulation? Why not go the whole hog and install an insulated raft foundation?. Hit the search button above and look at insulated concrete rafts.
  15. The cheapest I can find on line is 67p per sheet more than I’ve been quoted! I need 400 sheets, that adds up!
  16. Only got insulated plasterboard! i need good old plain plasterboard!
  17. Clearly someone is telling porkies. ”We will try our best to help everybody out but we can only sell as much stock as we can buy.“ so the manufacturer has too much stock and the distributor too little.
  18. Just got this email from CCF. “Unfortunately we are struggling to supply this order as it stands as we have reduced stock level and we have to prioritise essential works due to Covid 19. Sorry we can't help at the moment. We will get in touch if any additional stock becomes available.” The local B&Q don't have the stock or a delivery driver! The BM gets his stock from CCF! We don’t have a Wicks and TP are closed, mind you aid never use the as they are rubbish on price! Bugger!
  19. My nearest depot is Carlisle and according to the manager they are shut. I’ll try a different branch as I’ve agreed a great price .
  20. I’m after six pallets of plaster board, none in the local BMs and CCF is shut! Any suggestions where to try next?
  21. Anyone got any thoughts on leaving them in the buff?
  22. I have the same problem, our Seble water heater is rubbish, at the right price id also instal a hot water tap.
  23. Having done some further research in my spare time! I read that one of the large oak frame manufacturers suggests that oak does not need any treatment and can simply be left in its natural condition. What do you think, Oslo oil or not?
  24. We’re going to treat them with Danish oil or similar, then wrap them in bubble wrap, we have loads of the stuff, everything comes in bubble wrap!
  25. Is we’re in lock down, just started our 5th week I finally found time to start cleaning the oak beams. Wow! Oxalic acid works wonders, if been sceptical given how many black marks and stains we had. The Oxalic acid cleaned up the lot. All I need to do now is treat the cleaned up oak and then over it all up ready for plastering. Mind you the plasterboard supplier is shut and the plastering team in lockdown.
