Garage construction. Stick build or blockwork?
joe90 replied to Russdl's topic in Garages & Workshops
Timber is still expensive vs blockwork but if you can do most then labour cost will be lower My workshop is block because I wanted to hang lots of stuff on walls and didn’t want to have to find studs to do it and easy to render to, you could always labour for the block layer, mixing, moving blocks etc and reduce your labour costs, Render on blockwork has got to be easier/cheaper than on a stick frame, timber moves and I would be concerned with how you mitigate that with a stick frame and what would you would use to clad the frame to render on? And the additional cost of that 🤔 -
I like (and have fitted ) GRP, but have no knowledge of rubber solutions, for me GRP every time (but fitted by a professional who knows what they are doing!

I am about to stop being a landlord and can’t wait. I was asked my advise as a builder about black moulding a house only to see the wife dried all the washing indoors, no trickle vents and minimal heating, I told them to buy a washing line and turn the heating up. They were not happy as they wanted be to “build a solution 🙄

I used cladco sheets on my workshop roof, I didn’t use counter battens but draped the felt between rafters to create drainage/ventilation. The felt was run over the ridge to create a water roof layer in case wind driven rain got under the ridge capping. The lowest batten was 100mm from the sheet edge to not make it not vulnerable to wet from the rain entering the gutter. My felt was run just into the gutter but I guess you could use felt trays for a more robust solution.

Madog slate country or quarry of origin?
joe90 replied to janette's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Porthmadoc is the port the slate was shipped from after coming down the narrow gauge railway (which is now a tourist route) from the Llechwed slate mines near Blaenau Ffestiniog. -
+1, I would not allow it in my build 👍

It depends on the state of the facia,s that exist, covering them is like a thick coat of paint to stop moisture but if the rot has already stated it won’t last long. I have done it both ways (depending on facia condition and customer choice.

Can’t remember but standard 42’

But mine was all oak, strip carpet up the middle which is why it’s framed in softwood but oak planks instead of chipboard.
-
Well I built mine as the stair co wanted way to much £. Simply 6x2 timbers using hangers onto walls at 400mm centres, stair co supplied both short stair runs and enough oak to board it and match the flights.

Nope, sorry mate, mine is virtually silent (you have to listen hard to hear slight air movement noise unless on boost) +1, and I made my own manifold and lined it with acoustic foam to act as a silencer as well, also the flow adjusters are at the manifold not the outlet into the room (these can create noise as they are throttling the air in the room)

Mobile Phone Reception issue?
joe90 replied to ashthekid's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
No, and now I have finished the house my wife announced she wanted a divorce, lovely judge decided she gets a big chunk despite me funding nearly all of it , and neither of us can live here 🤯 (sorry fir the rant but I am very pi##ed off), oh, and thanks fir the offer 👍 -
Yes I did check reveals and love the results, I fixed to the outer leaf with stainless brackets and screws. As ours was a brick build I got the brick layer to use whole or half bricks and sized the windows to match overlapping by 20mm each side.

I am considering EWI ing a property, I can fix the insulation myself but will need to have it acrylic rendered, any ideas on cost of that per sq m.

You get what you pay fir I guess?

Don’t worry about it, it’s fine, stress is bad for your health, ask me how I know 😵💫

If the floors not spongy don’t worry about it and get that ceiling repaired before he turns up 😇
-
Ah, didn’t realise it had been screeeded and flooring over, is the floor spongy above? Just put a packer in the hole the same thickness as the floorboard and fix a support piece over it.
-
A bodge to cover the hole?. I think it’s just broken, a shake in the wood or twisted grain (split) that has given way due to a point load. If it were me I would find a similar type of wood, cut the hole out square (jigsaw) fit a support piece underneath and fashion youre new piece to fit the hole.

Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler: Relative Climate Impact
joe90 replied to Green Power's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
All become vegan..? Slurry is collected when cows are indoors, milking etc. Still produces methane in the atmosphere 🤷♂️, as been said before we will not stop burning gas overnight so if we burn the methane it helps power security (🖕to Putin) and possibly not rely on world gas prices.
