Shower, tray, tiles, and all the rest...
Declan52 replied to Crofter's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Do you not really like the concealed type then @Nickfromwales due to the hassle if something goes wrong it's a kango session on a normal block wall. I have one of each and changing the cartridge on the bar mixer type was piss easy.- 118 replies

Whatever you add on underneath will be the important bit to get you a pass. The BC guy doesn't really care what you use as long as when he does your as built sap it gives a pass. Have you used Jeremy's calculator to mess about with different widths to see what will get you a pass and what the budget will stretch to.

No and in the real world will end up better. It takes a lot of time and work to cut sheets of insulation perfect or you end up with gaps that need filled. Frame fill is easy to cut and springs out and doesn't budge. Me and a few others went down this route. Just make sure that you get the higher density version as it's better u values.
-
Is putting the insulation on the inside skin an option or would you loose to much room.
-
I would go the cheapest option.

I have a nice neighbour like that who going by the smoke has to be burning tyres. If he has it lit and the wind is blowing my way we have no other way round it but to turn the mhrv of. Easy and cheapest option would be a humidity controlled fan like you get in a bathroom. Still a hole in the wall but it's either that or the window open.
-
Yeah it's one of the extracts in my whole house system. What are you doing about ventilation in the rest of the house???
-
I have a mhrv extract above my condensing dryer and it takes away any moisture it produces.

The timber route might as you say end up costing more mainly due to the extra amount of labour involved. Are you able to do this yourself to save money. How much is the kanuf brio boards, doesn't look a cheap option. Long term the Rockwool being not as good an insulator as the celotex will cost you more in the long run.
-
How much have you to play with in total, 150mm for insulation and then 100mm for screed or can you squeeze any more.
-
I would tend to agree with all what has been said here already. There are quite a few MBC builds on here and I would pay more heed to real life experiences than what a salesman is trying to pitch. Put your sums in the calculator and see what it gives you.

Vacuum cleaner recommendations?
Declan52 replied to Jeremy Harris's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
There was some new EU directive on the power of vacuum cleaners and now they can't be more than 900w. Came in at the start of September http://www.which.co.uk/news/2017/08/eu-vacuum-cleaner-ban-2017-everything-you-need-to-know/ Best bet might be eBay for an older model with more power.- 81 replies

Or use these. http://www.diy.com/departments/round-terracotta-pot-h170mm-dia210mm/925981_BQ.prd?icamp=recs&rrec=true I have used them in my last house and my new build to cover all the downlights. Cut a notch out for the cable and silicone it to the plasterboard. If the pot has drainage holes in the bottom then another dab of silicone sorts that out. It's a 2 min job for each light.

You are meant to put warning tapes above each service but in reality is very rare to find them.
-
On top of it. The stuff I used had the wire sewn into a yellow mesh roll like this https://www.centriforce.com/en/products/utility-protection/detectable-underground-warning-mesh/

Definitely gas. A CAT will only detect metal so will find the electric and telephone cables. Won't be any gd for water, sewer or gas. If you put a digger bucket through water or a sewer pipe it's no big deal just a bit messy!! If you go through an electric cable you get a lovely blue flash, if it's 33kv then it's a big blue flash and a big hole in the digger bucket. If you hit a gas pipe then it's a fairly big bill if you are lucky enough to still be here to pay it.

recommending a VAT reclaim company?
Declan52 replied to DH202020's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
As mentioned above the hardest part is finding all the invoices. Once you have them it's just a matter of putting them in order and filling out the form. I just used the form the send out rather than an excel document. I put every thing in knowing that I couldn't claim for and let them sort it out. From start to finish it was a few hours work. I scanned each invoice incase they got lost in the post and sent it recorded delivery.- 30 replies

It's it really much quicker than troweling it on. Didn't look it on the video but most of the plasterers I know are animals who don't hang about getting it on the wall.

Always used a masonary roller for that job.

Internet / TV / Phone Services
Declan52 replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Doesn't really matter who you go with bt, sky, talk talk or plusnet they all are great until you need them. I had nothing but issues with sky in my previous house so they where never an option, by tried to shaft me with my connection on my new build, where looking £600 for putting a cable approx 10m to the pole in my garden. Ended up with talk talk and so far they have been fine. Had some issues with my router a few months back and they where quick to sort it out. Granted me from NI talking to some Indian guy on the phone was not much fun but got there in the end. I just have freeview on all my TVs but use android boxes for Kodi and IPTV so have access to every channel that I need to watch plus access to all the sport, films and TV shows that I want to watch. Kodi is free but the IPTV is £80 a year.- 12 replies

Screed/concrete/dry/wet?
Declan52 replied to curlewhouse's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
You can put additives into a screed mix to speed up the drying times.
