I’ve made a start on the dabbing today To those who already know this ignore this post But we’ve had a few questions about air tightness and foam on block Ive taken a couple of pictures If you are paying a contractor to do this and it is any different than pictured Your not getting what you have paid for and air tightness will be an issue further down the line Skirtings are decorative and shouldn’t need to be bunged up with foam

The Quik answer is You can have the render right down I normally trim the dpc flush with the slab set a laser line along the dpc then stick a movement joint bead on top of the dpc In effect your leaving a 15 mil void around the hidden dpc You can normally match the movement bead to your render colour

"Must Sees" at the NEC Show?
nod replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I’ve been to quite a few shows The NEC is a must We made some good contacts Pasquils for roofing trusses Posi joists etc are an absolute must Regarding nail guns Hitachi are half the price of pasloda and do the same job I have a Dewalt No Gas so beats the others hands down in cold weather But no good for roofing due to the weight I also made a good contact for UFH Cadman and B&B I’ll have to look that one up The treatment plant guys were really helpful and had a show offer of a camera survey for a £100 Perhaps a bit early for you But worth talking to Al Murad tiles The MD was manning there stand and offered a massive discount for volume my my wife and myself are hoping to go on Friday -

nod replied to nod's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
I think the message here for all of us is to not fully plaster till you have everything in place Ive just plastered two self builds out in Cumbria Just before Christmas Both W aren’t ready for the kitchens to be boarded let alone plastered Im booked to go back in May I don’t think they were having problems with the council think they just hadn’t found a kitchen design that they liked Definitely a wake up call -

Yes they were chalk and cheese The one that started it all was so aggressive and uncompromising Telling me that that self builders are treated the same as everyone else The one that came down today did mention mainstream builders But added that we wouldn’t compare you with them I bet she wasn’t there more than five minutes She didn’t go upstairs or in the kitchen area Just stood in the hallway about a metre from the front door -

Well the council inspector has been Walked in and said You’ve no plaster on the walls Said let us know when you are completely plastered out and we will re assess When we deem it fit We will give you three months at 100% discount while you finish off and 50% there after We were supposedly in arrears by 2800 which would have nearly doubled byChristmas We are both very relieved Thank you all for you support after a really bad week Gary
