Agreed Catnics that size are a waste of money A steel with a hit and mis welded plate underneath Will not be a lot more exspensive and will never bend Steel is as cheap as chips at the moment our SE says he will only spec steel on openings over 2mtrs

Hate that Our family has dealt with a local carpet shop for nearly fifty years Now they want cash upfront and can we pay the fitter seperately Not good There is a small carpet shop that does our rentals Him and his brother do all the fitting We agree a price on a hand shake abd bacs pay him when he gets round to sending an invoice

We have three kitchen designs on the go we went back to Nolte, one of the three German kitchens suppliers They were up to 21k similar to the others My wife told them that the end panels didn’t match the shadow line on the units and would like the onset plinth to run around the sides unlike the pictures attached Extra £600 x 3 I’d heard enough She also wanted more drawers

Insulated block n beam.
nod replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Hi Russel Not to put a dampener on things we saw this system at the NEC and loved it BUT a few weeks later I went doing some framing on a wimpy job noticed that this system was being used Two ground workers were putting the floors into four detached houses Superfast to lay But they told me that there was problems in the six occupied houses Lots of cracking on the screeds and movement around skirtings Fortunately none where tiled But carpets were taken up and self levelling was put down They had used a 75 sc screed The floors were very springy before the screed If I had of used this system I would have gone for 50 mil pumped concrete to be safe -
I personally think the quote of twenty is very reasonable at the moment Labour costs have gone through the roof There is very little incentive for tradesmen that work on site to do cash jobs at the weekends as most construction firms are chucking money at jobs to keep up If your happy with the quote I’d get it agreed

Spray alternative to parge lining an internal block wall.
nod replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Heat Insulation
Using sound coat would help seal your block and block out external sound Though there is nothing to stop you putting it on internal block walls But most of the sound will pass through the doorway Your looking at £3.20 per mtr supply and fix Years ago when D&D came in we would put a ten mill sand and cement coat on the party walls Painting a slurry on is very messy and slow and would make little difference to sound -

I normally use the bagged stuff Parge coat plus Helps with sound also 5 mil thick about 5 mtrs per bag Bit more of blockwork is neat and pointed Normally takes me about 15 minutes to use a four bag mix -

Large coat isn’t worth doing yourself One plasterer will easy cover a 100 mtrs in a day -
As DO pointed out If there is anything you feel confident in doing yourself Ask them to knock it off

We had thought about doing that All the kitchen suppliers around here use the same granite quarts place About two miles from were we live
-
Yeah just popped into the showroom over Christmas Trade was shut I only realised they had a trade counter once we were in
-
Yes your right Quoted is £25k for a mid range kitchen
-
We liked Magnet But there prices weee ridiculous More exspensive than all of the German company’s that we visited
-
Ha ha Brilliant Suggestive text has got me into trouble more than once
-
My other half has still not settled on a kitchen I'm tempted to go to Howdens or similar and add quartz worktops Though most of the cost with the German kitchen we are looking at have been appliances and worktops Around 12k i would like to hear from those who have used Howdens or Wickes Or anyone else

electricity connections Extortionate price

You will find that all the way through the build the problem with dealing with utility’s is that you are put through to a call centre Ten calls ten different operatives -

I’ve recently helped a friend with a barn conversion Power right next to the barn But no spare capacity He was given a simalar quote to yours But dug all the trench out himself and we rolled the cable ducting out and back filled if He wasn’t allowed to dig the final ten mtrs as it crossed a side road So he still had a hefty 4K bill for the connection But saved around £18k on the original quote He had only budgeted £1000 for the electric contraction Being as the main ran right past his front door
