Electric shower vs. instant water heater
dogman replied to Crofter's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Just to add something else to the mix. We fitted TMVs to the hot water supply's in the bathrooms and wet rooms. it does help reduce hot water consumption as well as avoiding the boiled child- 84 replies

Electric shower vs. instant water heater
dogman replied to Crofter's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
@Crofter we run a holiday let. The only complaints we have ever had are the showers not being powerful. We have good water pressure with plenty of flow, but restrict the flow as part of the water conservation rules we followed. Took them all out in the end. For some reason it is one thing everyone expects( especially European visitors) , so try to get it right- 84 replies

Design @MrsRA happy. Might you know how?
dogman replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
I used the Ikea one as SWMBO wants an Ikea Kitchen ( not me as can never get anything else to fit IKEA products) Need an account on line and look for 3D planner not the other one. It does not work with Chrome or Oprea. I used Firefox. It is unbelievably slow but does work and produces list of what you need -
Window and Door Detailing on a Stone Clad MBC Timber-framed House
dogman commented on TerryE's blog entry in The House at the Bottom of the Garden
Am i right in thinking this could be a timber batten rather than a purpose made fire stop? -
+1 for an ASHP. Having lived next to a house fitted with one that was facing us (in a rural area) and now living in that house it is hard to tell when it is on. I actually have to open the back door and stick my head out.

MVHR vent location

Thanks @Mikey_1980 This may be the best way for me aswell. Did you use the rigid duct Or insulated ducting -
MVHR vent location
dogman replied to dogman's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I have considered using the oval ducts that are about 50mm deep. Will need to drop the celing by another 30mm the plenum is not that deep -

That was my idea of using the service void on MBC homes. The air tight layer is the OSB inner skin for walls or the airtight membrane for roof this is then battened out by mbc as a service cavity -
MVHR vent location
dogman replied to dogman's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
@Mikey_1980 Had not thought of that, Was it standard 75mm flexible duct ? It would save on insulating pipe to avoid condensation Were they able to seal the vents enough for the air test?( didn't you have issues with yours) -
MVHR vent location
dogman replied to dogman's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I did consider floor vents but wife not a fan of them. I have found that in our current house the vertical vents are noisier than roof vents. It could be the type of diffuser though It would be the easiest in the floor and as any noise is sent upwards it should help -

I have had my designs back from my preferred supplier. My next issue is the supply outlets in the bedrooms. As we have a sort of room in roof (roof starts 1800mm from floor with a height of 2800 at the small ceiling) it is difficult to put the outlets in the ideal location ie in the corner furthest from the door I have the following choices in the vertical wall between two bedrooms in the flat roof above the windows or try my latest mad idea. Use the service void as a duct one side will be osb the other plasterboard my only worry is that i am looking to have some sort or active cooling so it may need to be insulated with some sort of thin insulation mhvr idea.pdf Is it a good idea? am i missing something. I can work around the battening. Comments please -
Shhhh, there's a selfbuilder trying to sleep
dogman replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
One bit of advise i have now followed is to stop all self build related work 2-3 hours before sleep. Apparently it takes this long for your "mind" to switch off. Can be hard as we all have lots to do especially here -
Extractor hood
dogman replied to Pocster's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Some info from BPC who a lot of members have used https://www.bpcventilation.com/blog/the-cooker-hood-conundrum -
The door needs to be tested to secured by design or PAS 24. It also needs to comply with App Q of the building regs. The supplier will tell you this. I have had problems finding a pair of doors for our new build as very few have been tested and can be fitted to new builds. You actually don't need a spy hole. you do need to be able to see someone stood there and this could be a window or even CCTV

What information do Building Control actually need?
dogman replied to Triassic's topic in Building Regulations
Was this the company that designed your slab? or is it since they moved manufacture to the UK. At least it will stop my BC officer going on about it complying with UK regs and having a UK based engineer sign it off. -

dogman replied to Triassic's topic in Building Regulations
I understand the design at least is being completed by http://www.build-liteuk.co.uk/about-build-lite-uk/ They have a bit of a backlog and we delayed it a few weeks to finish demolition. Interestingly they quote the u value as 0.08 rather than 0.1 -

I am a bit nervous, as ours are already asking about the slab. MBC are using a different company and there is a backlog for the slab design. Will have to see when i get everything back from them. We had two BC officers last time one made us jump through hoops, but half way through we had they swapped and the second was absolutely wonderful from a builders point of view I am Sure you did get everything right
