I paid a ‘ premium’ for UFH install and MVHR....same installer - recommended by supplier - he was not the cheapest and has done a good job but for various reasons bits were left undone at commissioning and I have some issues with MVHR. Getting him back is the problem he keeps saying he is going to come but never turns up. The plumbers used were rubbish, again they were not the cheapest but didnt realise how rubbish until we were in. As someone said earlier price is not always an indicator.

Yes it works.....tested with overnight young male guests and a hot curry. No worries at all with extracting and no return....

If your unit is purple what about a funky metallic top...either metal or glass. -
@recoveringacademic I absolutely agree with Debbie. It is a very sad reflection on British workmen....you can see why some folks opt for the flat pack houses from Europe where everything is pre installed...and bland etc but it works!
-
@Tyke2 mine were specialist installers and plumbers...all charged top dollar nothing cheap and rubbish service.

I am still waiting 4 months later for ufh/mvhr installer to come back and sort out problems with trap drying out and missing bits on manifolds. I have wastes from washing machine etc that sound like world war 3 when draining, plumber who did the job dissappeared. Try to find someone local who will know whats what and not do the sucking through the teeth thing and then want fortunes to replumb it all....so far been let down by 2 not turning up to look. Absolutely despair!

gas and electricity prices/suppliers
lizzie replied to lizzie's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Thanks Ive just been looking at that.....my boiler is a few months old and under guarantee so not much benefit in that deal for me. Sounds very worthwhile for you. My sister has just told me she has a current bulb link for a £50 cashback, bulb rates dont seem that competitive though.. -
I can see you have a specific render on that drawing............seems just a standard self coloured k rend type.... monocouche I would have though you could us a different render as long as similar colour no one would notice. We used an Alumasc system, it is a vented facade system - a silcone render onto a carrier board and is for TF buildings. Installers are plentiful. Others on here have used the same system. Its not cheap but has BBA certs and guarantee. Between us here I am sure we can dredge up names in your area or Alumasc themselves have a list. TBH if you are thinking of dropping the render then I would talk to planners first, there is quite a bit of it and no render at all would change the external appearance considerably.

If you don't need to get out of the old house why not stay there a while longer even when new house heating on, give the new place chance to dry out properly.

I am now finally ready to escape the B Gas standard tariff. I went with them when we got the services in because it was easier, never thought it would take this long to sort out the billing! Ive been looking around at various providers...anyone used Bulb? Any recommendations for any providers please. I have no PV all mains gas and electricity.

My gas cost £13k! In hindsight that was mad we should have gone airsource it only does UFH and DHW.

Thats a great idea, I searched for solar powered blinds and found nothing. Will follow with interest, let us know how you get on.

Ive been looking at these....any thoughts? https://mastershelf.co.uk/product-category/floating-shelves/thick-50mm/

@Adam2 I think I would go for solar glass if I were you, much cleaner..... I have a major overheating problem on south/west elevations and I am single storey. I have investigated lots of external blinds (can give you company names but not recommends as not used the product) and may yet get a couple fitted next year but for me that is now a challenge as building is complete and cabling is a problem. I think @vivienz is having external blinds and bris Soleil.. I am having external solar film fitted this week on my living area windows (S&W), I have had a long journey to find a film suitable for my laminated windows..... I have internal black out blinds in the bedrooms and I they are not very effective for solar gain. I am told you need to stop the heat getting in, once its in and internal blind will just help keep it in.
-
What are you doing to mitigate solar gain and overheating on all the glazing?
-
however you power it I highly recommed MVHR & UFH + heated towel rads. V cosy warm house,
-
Can you have one on each...as far as I know I have 4 wastes funnelling into one pipe.
-

Quickstep Laminate from Howdens - how good?
lizzie replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
My carpenter got stuff from local Howdens even though his account was at another branch 50 miles away. It was no problem other than he didnt get such a big discount away from his home branch. -
Why spend extra time and money making sure appliances are low noise A rated etc for open plan area then find the plumbing sounds like world war 3 when the dw and wm are draining! Been like this since day one but only now getting the time to focus on issues like this. My utility and kitchen wet areas are back to back and they have plumbed waste for 2 sinks, dishwasher and washing machine all into the same point under the kitchen sink. Inside the cupboard the back wall has no boarding its just open insulation, with exposed pipes, that cupboard has no back either (Italian design). Any thoughts on how to get this a bit quieter without dismantling all the plumbing...which would be impossible now anyway. If this is better placed in another thread please can you move it wherever I wasnt sure where best to put it.

@Weebles I have the door in your picture. Ours is fixed to the structure (double skin brick garage), we have dot and dab boarded and taped walls and ceilings in garage too. Boarding was done before fitting door, track butts up as far as I recall. We fitted a rubber threshold too because we found the soft rubber seal on the bottom of the door whilst not letting water in did allow a line of water to build up if rain was in that direction. I bought a rubber threshold seal for Hormann doors from an on line specialist and we fitted it a few weeks ago. No line of water now.

Windows for new build in Kent, suggestions needed
lizzie replied to Sharon's topic in Introduce Yourself
Hi @Sharon and welcome. I went for 3g ali clad Internorm because we are very exposed high on a ridge and get all the weather. They were expensive but we felt the most solid. Lots of others about and people on here have used quite a variety, sure you will get some feedback on lots of options. In my experience the retailer you buy through is as important as the product itself, great windows rubbish installers = my experience. Check out the installers reputation whichever brand of windows you go for.
