Advanced PV calculator anyone? Or how to..
kommando replied to puntloos's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
There is a rolling code that changes with the date on your connecting PC, as long as you know the formula of date to code then you can log on as installer. I have one that still wants to be in Germany with that stupid 10 mins average AC voltage rule but the expected DNO AC voltage on it can still be modified so its not an issue, odd that every other setting but the country can be modified on that one. On the others I can change the country including making them Windy Boys or even turn off anti islanding completely. -

I must be working under an illusion then when changing the settings on mine then. No Grid Guard-code needed for my old Sunny Boys. -

Use the SMA design website, it will recommend one of their inverters but that's easy to find alternatives, it will take your choice of panels and the location, orientation and angles to give you the predicted outputs. You can do as many reiterations as you like until you find the best combo. https://www.sunnydesignweb.com/sdweb -
The best way to run network cables to upstairs?
kommando replied to JohnBishop's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
I started off with a 56kbs modem, then 128kbs ISDN, next 0.5mbs ADSL, that got upgraded over the years to 10mbs ADSL but the decaying copper wire made it unreliable and unusable, next 25mbs area Wifi, then single 4G at 80mbs, now two 4g routers at 145mbs combined and before the end of 2022 I get FTTP and will go for 150mbs but keep a 4G as backup until the contract ends. Internally my network transfers with 6 camera's, various controlled switches, music casting raspberries etc struggle at times. Currently its the router as its Firewall computation is overloading the CPU restricting throughput to 350mbs, next router is setup and will allow full utilisation of the 1gig ports. As time goes on these loads will increase again and will be looking for a router with 2.5g ports and the cpu power to support. Best to only need to run wires behind cavities once. -
You are in an informal route currently which is unlikely to have procedures you can find or follow. You need to get it into a formal route such as a planning application where there are procedures to follow and you can study them in advance. So as an example the planning rules will have dates for objections to be finalised which stops more being raised after the objections are neutralised by an appeal.

Gutter slope / fall - will you see it?
kommando replied to markocosic's topic in Rainwater, Guttering & SuDS
My roof is possibly 200 years old if the original thatch was replaced by slate in 18th century. I had the guttering renewed with the gutter clips nailed into the sarking boards under the first 2 rows of slates which were removed for nailing access and then replaced. The slope is not consistent and there was pooling. Instead of trying to fix the slope by removing the 2 rows of slates again I got round this by adding downpipes in the pooling area. -
You have to refute all their issues not just a few, if they raise 5 then refuting 3 does not win 3:2 only 5:0 wins, you have to refute all points they raise except when they raise 2 points that are the opposite of each other. You need to look up their procedures and see if for example they can add extra points later or you could end up hitting moles only for them to add new holes with new moles needing whacking.

Road Traffic Act 1988 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/part/VII/crossheading/interpretation “cycle” means a bicycle, a tricycle, or a cycle having four or more wheels, not being in any case a motor vehicle, “footpath”, in relation to England and Wales, means a way over which the public have a right of way on foot only, So by calling it a Footpath excludes use by cycles, and even allowing cycles does not make it a vehicular highway as a cycle is not a vehicle.

The best way to run network cables to upstairs?
kommando replied to JohnBishop's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
In the future that will potentially create a bottleneck as technology moves on, the single cable will limit all the connected devices upstairs shared bandwidth to the capability of that single cable plus a create a single point of failure. So 2 cables to link the two floors would be better, giving duplication and doubling bandwidth. -
What makes washing up liquid thick is added salt, it's the salt absorbed into the rubber that's the issue and why it never should be used when mounting new tyres.

This is Robin's video where is uses an old wheel meter to show how his box works. What it also shows that using calibration changes the wheel can drift forwards or backwards when the diverter is dumping load.

How to 'option in' home automation in future?
kommando replied to Andeh's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
No, the lights are separate for now as the room is hardly used during non daylight hours and is bright enough in daylight. As it is the fan gets over ridden and turned off a lot too using battery-powered remote switch in bathroom and control box upstairs. -

In my bathroom I added a Humidistat in parallel with the pir, so either motion or humidity will keep the fan going. -

They can reconvene under the proper rules and resubmit with better objections, don't give them a second chance.

There is a famous name for alloy rims called Borrani who were an Italian company, unavailable for many years the name reappeared 5 or 6 years ago and the rims were advertised as Made in Italy. After a few quality complaints ref the welded joints, out of round etc it emerged the rims were made in China, sent to Italy and there they drilled the spoke holes in the rim, part number, Borrani and Made in Italy also stamped on the rim. That was deemed enough local content for them to be sold as Made in Italy. Can't see why that cannot be applied to a worktop finished off in Italy, don't think its right though but my opinion is not worth much other than slowing down sales of Borrani rims to those that listen .

A G99 Fastrack is possibly free as its just a G98 with extra detail to cover the battery bank as a generator and how the system ensures even with full sun and a full bank of batteries only 3.68kw can be exported.

Its an adjustable pin, start by finding the makers name usually stamped on the steel middle section. I replaced a whole one recently but threw the old one away or I could have looked at the pin to see if its detachable, it can be adjustable using an allen key in the centre but never fully unscrewed one. If you need the whole replacement there are a number of measurements to take.

I have a thermostat on the hot water tank at 2/3 up, this overrides the boiler and turns it off once the hot water tank reaches 65C regardless of the boilers own temperature setting unless hot water is also needed for the radiator circuit. You would need to check the boiler and heating wiring plus valve controls and see if there is the option to add a thermostat. Even with the thermostat the boiler is turned off in summer and only turned on if the PV diversion has not heated the water enough, well depends on the temp of the water, for 5 or 10C the immersion is used for 15 mins rather than use the boiler as that needs to heat itself and all the water in it before it can heat the tank which is inefficient.

As long as the system eg the panels and the batteries are used within a circuit completely separate from the grid connected circuits then you do not need G98/G99 application/approval. However as soon a any part feeds wiring that is also connected to the grid even if temporarily then depending on the size of the generation you will need G98/G99. As an example I have a small generator for use during power cuts, it has a dedicated input feeding a 3 position rotary isolation switch Grid/Off/Generator on the main feed between the meter out and into the consumer unit. As the middle position is Off there is no possibility of the generator feeding the grid whilst moving the switch from Grid to Gen or back. The local DNO changed a Transformer recently and inspected the setup and allowed me to run the generator for the 2 days they cut me off.

Openreach to start direct contact with customers

Will this mean when relying on a wet piece of string for ADSL, that fails when it rains, you can book an engineer for the next rainy day or will it take the normal 5 visits. Only solution that worked was 4G. -
You want the 40mm insulated panels for a garage, no condensation provided its airtight except at the car door. The ridge is the area to be 100% airtight as the roof panels meet there leaving a gap, there is an internal ridge that is used but behind it and under the outer ridge you need a tight packing of insulation. There are foam fillers that match the sheet profile under the top ridge plate but do not rely on these for airtightness as the top ridge plate is 1mm steel with little strength to resist being picked up slightly by high winds, really only good for keeping birds out. Pics are of the internal ridge plate that sits on the top purlins and under the panels.

In robotics they use Quadrature boards to slow the signals down so the pluses can be read by the computer chip running the programs. I use them on my lathe and milling machine DRO's so if I fast feed the slides or saddle the DRO computer can keep up with the pulses from the 5 micron graduated glass scales. When machining to 0.01mm you cannot be looking at a dimension on the DRO screen and wondering if the figure on the DRO is correct.

As Steamy says go to PVGIS, look at the Dec/Jan daily yields and see if they will supply all your needs every 24 hrs, assuming you are going to have batteries to retain some of the daytime production for overnight requirements.

I looked at this flashing LED lark and decided it was a bit flaky. So I went for this meter as a supplementary meter which uses a CT clamp and exports the simple kwh usage on the S0 terminals and has more detail via an RS485 set of terminals. Cost is the same as the commercial LED flash readers. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000582989041.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.1a68180223g7Sr I use it to feed a Solar-log 500 box and the diagnostics on the solar log show no signals are lost on a 5m shielded twin core cable. I ordered the 65A version but a 100A version showed up and as my main fuse is 100A I left it at that. The 65A would have worked as there are no major loads other than a 5HP motor on a lathe at 25A max used when nothing else but lights are on. It does import and export on the display but the S0 output is the same for both import and export so no differentiation between the two. The RS485 output does differentiate as they are reported separately.
