Bath Surround / Boxing In, and concealed pipework
Nickfromwales replied to Onoff's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
That's a result. Essentially taps are serviceable from above anyhoo, but if you can't get parts then this would negate the worry of how to replace them when they do go. So, can your missus have a bath now? -
Am I being too sensitive or should I be concerned.
Nickfromwales replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Surveyors & Architects
Nick. Can we stick to factual instances please, rather than simply stating such things randomly. A plumber could easily be accused of the same, in fact just about any profession. . Thank you. -
I'm doing a flat where it's on the 2nd and 3rd story. BC have requested a sprinkler system and a protected lobby so I think I still have to fir fire doors. Is it common for sprinklers to negate the installation of fire doors? That would be a fine chunk of cash to put towards the sprinklers, and they're seemingly quite inconspicuous and unobtrusive ( as opposed to the horrible things I had visualised in my head ). Fire doors are pretty horrible in a domestic setting, so if sprinklers negate them then it should be something we look to discuss further here for sure .

Good Sense of Humour, ( so we can laugh at such injuries )

Welcome aboard . A gsh is a must here, so ask away and prepare yourself for the answers. We shoot from the hip but we keep to the facts , with a good bit of banter along the way.

Purlins - where to have the join?
Nickfromwales replied to MarkH's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Strange that he didn't identify the issue and provide a mitigation strategy in his return . He'd have known all about how far that timber could traverse before needing a joint so maybe next time you get charged for eye contact, bring that up . -
Unsupported edges/joins on plasterboard
Nickfromwales replied to Crofter's topic in Plastering & Rendering
I consider myself proffesional'ish, and that's EXACTLY what I've done for years. . The off-cut cut to fill at least 80% of the 'stitch', say 350mm off-cut for a 400mm gap, and then stick the two boards together accordingly. -
I was just about to amend my earlier reply to say I forgot you had no attic so I gave a bit of a bum steer in this particular case. Indeed, you'll be better off liaising with the joiners & boarders to get the ceilings to go on last, and trust me I fully sympathise with Prodaves POV as it's the same for plumbers, if not worse, when your left out of the considerations of the build......( and then told to make the pipes and wires 'invisible' )
-
Yes, BUT, then the joiners have to anticipate all the wall locations and add much more timber to 'take' the ceiling plasterboards. So the ease you create for the spark ( & plumber ) gets offset against the nightmare you create for the joiners / boarders .

Every place ( 2 bed to 10 bed ) I / we ( family ) have ever rented have been treated as my own, or better. I think @Crofter's ethos is exactly spot on, and he should stick to his plan. If you aim for cattle that's what you'll get, BUT, if you go for a med / top price you'll get exclusivity and a much better tenant ( or 'customer' in your case ). I'd go for the solid wood top and just refinish it accordingly, with @PeterW's concoction to keep the red wine at bay. Get the idea of changing the work tops every 4-5 years out of your head and just fit a good quality oak / hardwood top that will develop patina and age with grace. Whats the cooker going to be? LPG or electric?

I've experience of this Siga tape and I can say it's incredibly good stuff. Compromise on the membrane all you can, but DO NOT compromise on the tape . Cheaper tapes which give up and start to leak will negate all the hard work you've done, and also the situation would become exaggerated by the fact you've got MVHR, so, give this the same respect you gave your founds and raft and keep the standard high. ?

Sorry to be the party pooper, but @Crofter, do a nice job, don't restrict your choice and bite the bullet. Get a 4m worktop couriered to you and do it properly. By the time you've sorted a router, got to grips with using it, bought bolts, colourfill and solvent etc you'll soon see the value in just buying the right top in and getting on with something of value whilst you await its arrival. Oh, and God forbid you sneeze when routering, as that'll be game over.

Happy days. Worth a bit of sensible cross examining sometimes . Thanks for updating the thread .

Strawberry Tree Lodge update
Nickfromwales replied to NSS's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Tidy. I need 40 sheets mate. I'll send a van I bought a PB lift / hoist. I'm going to save about 4 times its cost on labour over the next 3 jobs as they all have ceilings to reboard. You can get them with a tilting bed to deal with vaulted ceilings but I just bought a good quality, robust straight one. Lugging 8.4t of PB 's isn't fun, but the knee sounds even less appealing . With 15mm, don't drop one directly on your foot as that'll smash most of the bones in it! They're heavy as hell. We're halfway through 15mm FB'ing a ceiling now and they're a doddle with the lift. I went for 15mm over 12 purely for extra sound deadening, but the extra 'robustness' is undeniable. I'll put roofing battens across these, at 90 degrees to the joists, to level the ceiling flat, then resilient bars, then 12mm acoustic PB. The idea being I can fit the slimline 6w and 9w LED lights wherever I want without compromising the fire barrier ( and no more baked bean can size GU10's for me ). Just fitted 5 in my boys bedroom and the light output is phenomenal, with a dispersion that spanks the arse off of any regular down lighter. ? @NSS, Thanks for the blog update, keep up the good work. -
A strip like this set into the tile? Id look at diffusing the light as much as possible or having something to make sure you cannot see the lights, just the light coming from them, whilst laying in the bath.

The answer is closed. That stops the radius flexing / compressing excessively and the grout cracking ? And to reinforce what Dave said about those stinking flexible bath trims, I'd get them banished from existence tomw morning TOTAL COMPLETE AND UTTER DOGSHIT.

The gumtree one. Upgraded it to 16gb for £30. £480 in total with a 24" hdmi monitor ( used but good ) and he was a genuine nice guy so happy to part with the money. Water cooled and overclocked to 4.2 something or other ? I told my boy he's not getting it until 6th jan ( due to a big demand before Xmas lol ) but I've got it ready for him to open Xmas day. Gonna get a cooks match box and wrap it as his "opening present" ( given because he's not getting the PC lol ) with instructions inside about where to go look for it. ? Bingo. Edited to add : The PC was brand new and built fresh to requirement. All the boxes for the bits were supplied and the receipts came with them for the manufacturer warranty. It's only the monitor that was a second Seemed like a good price to me tbh.

For the (self) builder who has everything
Nickfromwales replied to PeterW's topic in Tools & Equipment
Check this shit out ? -
Which I've mentioned is the long term plan so is relevant tbh. ?? Ok, cheap enough. ? Ta. Managed...... Will this need configuring? If so can it be done off my boys PC? You up for some tuition ? ????

Christ on a bike. . For gaming, I take it I'll "need" the GB switch? Only want to buy it once .
-
If I can't get why fhy from your box then I'll roll with the one @PeterW has sniffed out for me, I'm buying it regardless as its a bargain, and I still need a min of an 8-way switch anyhoo. Thinking about the camera idea, I'm also looking to approach the guy that made the PC I got for my boy and having a house PC done, which would run 24/7, and have that recording. That a good idea or am I better off with a dedicated cctv recorder of some other magic beans. ? I want the house PC to connect to my main / other tv's as a film bank, but these fire sticks and there associated wizardry currently escapes me. I'll raise that separately to keep this on an even keel. Focker out.

Yes Ma'am In basket, off to bank first thing.......I knew the kids Xmas money would come in handy ( joking ) Didn't even think about cameras, top man. ? Looks like @Onoff and @Steptoe have a challenge my gauntlet lobbing amigo. If I can't get a second wifi access point then I'm back to moving the VM box ( no pressure guys ).
