  1. I don't think a home office is considered a "habitable space" but the work is probably a "material alteration". https://www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200130/common_projects/25/garage_conversion/2 https://www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200130/common_projects/56/working_from_home/2
  2. Does it have to be inside the ASHP or could it be anywhere in the pipe run?
  3. Welcome to the forum Matt. Sounds like an interesting project.
  4. What are the rooms going to be used for? If these are going to be habitable rooms the whole thing needs to be properly designed to meet building regulations, particularly with regards to escape from fire.
  5. If you are making valley soakers can you turn the 12" wide lead sideways to make them as wide as you like or would they be too short top to bottom?
  6. Yes indeed but WTO rules don't mean you MUST charge any particular tariff so in many cases we don't currently charge a tariff (perhaps because we don't make those products here). If we go slapping the same tariff on everybody its going to mess up a lot of stable trading relationships. Borris has already said he plans to scrap tariffs to "limit economic damage". As a member of the EU we also agreed to accept a quota of products from outside the EU. On these products there is zero tariff until the quote has been exceeded then a tariff applies. I believe we have already agreed to continue to accept "our share" after Brexit. This agreement was made with the WTO not the EU.
  7. Currently if we can prove they have been through another EU country we can send them back to that country. We loose that right after Brexit.
  8. Under WTO rules if we put a tariff on EU goods we must put the same tariff on all other countries.
  9. Construction timber shortage.. mostly due to the pandemic and demand elsewhere.. https://www.theconstructionindex.co.uk/news/view/timber-industry-warns-of-continuing-shortages
  10. The Guardian: Brexit stockpiling causing 10-mile tailbacks in Calais... https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/dec/12/brexit-stockpiling-causing-10-mile-tailbacks-calais "The delays in crossing the Channel are causing acute problems in the UK. Honda and Jaguar have had to halt production temporarily because of parts shortages, and it emerged on Friday that Ikea had been besieged by complaints because of what it called “operational challenges” as shipments of its flatpack furniture are held up at clogged ports."
  11. Good idea. If you do that they might fit the opening ?
  12. In China they have a shortage of glass to make solar panels.. https://theenergymix.com/2020/11/11/chinas-solar-surge-leads-to-glass-shortage/ "With glass supplies running short and prices correspondingly spiking, Chinese solar manufacturers are appealing to Beijing to approve new glass factories—an industry that hit the brakes in 2018 when the country banned further expansion due to overcapacity concerns."
  13. I always assumed we made a lot of glass in the UK but it seems not.. Found this from pre covid days.. Seems like supply and demand isn't working. https://www.doubleglazingblogger.com/2018/07/theres-a-crisis-in-glass-and-its-going-to-get-worse/ "The problem is the UK makes very little glass for domestic consumption. And even by today’s standard it is very little. Operations such as Pilkington in the 80’s and 90’s have since been dramatically scaled back. I was told earlier today that Pilks at one time had over 90 plants in which they made their product in the UK, that now stands in the low single figures. So, due to a severe lack of UK glass-making ability, we have to import a lot of our glass from Europe. When there is a supply shortage from the continent, created deliberately or otherwise, this becomes a rather acute problem." "The UK isn’t a very profitable market place for the biggest glass makers right now. GDP growth is slow, Sterling isn’t performing well enough and construction growth is far better in key markets such as Germany. The upshot of all of that is the major players are now choosing to focus their supply of glass products to European and other growth markets and not the UK. In short, they’re making a commercial decision and actively focusing on other countries."
  14. Essentially yes. Sorry if this is obvious but... The cylinder is always full of water. The boiler can't send more water to it unless there is somewhere for the water already in it to go, and that's back to the boiler. Eg there is a closed loop similar to what you currently have. The difference between a regular/vented and unvented/system set up is explained here.. https://www.plumbnation.co.uk/blog/the-difference-between-vented-and-unvented-cylinders/
  15. Looks ideal for transformer and/or a public electric car charging station. Drop it into conversation at the pub and see if it helps improve their offer :-)

2nd Dec ASHP - or not

    Do they mean manufacturing impact?
  17. +1 to Amazon Prime and fulfilled by Amazon. Always found them good. I recently got sent wrong item and their returns system is about as good as it gets. Free return postage and the money refunded as soon as package was scanned at post office. Sometimes Amazon Prime prices are a bit more than ebay so i do use both but Amazon always first choice.

Well yes but oil isn't that much more than mains gas. 5.6 vs 4.8p/kWH.
  19. I've had same problem but without the email. I'm afraid its one reason why we get so much stuff from Amazon now. Its not just their prices that attract customers.

2nd Dec ASHP - or not

Found this, figures from June 2019.. https://www.confusedaboutenergy.co.uk/index.php/domestic-fuels/fuel-prices That puts electricity at between 2 and 4 times the cost of mains gas. Call it 3 times? So ASHP needs a COP of 3 to make the running costs the same. Not just for heating but the average for both heating and DHW.

2nd Dec ASHP - or not

Can someone with an ASHP here tell us how much they pay per kWH for electricity? Last I looked electricity was 3 or 4 times the cost of mains gas per kWH so the COP of the ASHP was needed just to equalise the running cost.
  22. Correct. They should pay Irish VAT instead of UK VAT.... if the UK company has set up their website to handle exports free of VAT. Not sure how eBay will work. Many are not vat registered.
  23. Impact of Brexit on exports to Ireland... https://amp.rte.ie/amp/1183380/ "Irish consumers make 70% of their online purchases from the UK" "If goods are valued at more than €150, consumers will face not only VAT but also customs duty. The charges will either be applied by the retailer selling the goods, or by authorities here on arrival." "..Revenue has pointed out that it has no way of knowing whether consumers will continue to buy from the UK in such numbers when additional charges begin to apply." "Revenue gives an example of an item priced at €167, it will be subject to customs duty of €20.04 and VAT at €39.28." This assumes UK websites won't immediately start deducting VAT for exports Ireland.
  24. Its 3 years to avoid the CIL but otherwise HMRC look at the specific circumstances. If you were to move in just for a few days or weeks they might decide it wasn't really your PPR. However if you were to live there for a bit longer and decide it was too small and then move that might be different. Your intention at the outset may matter. They may look at what you tell your lender so be careful what you say in letters and chat rooms.
  25. Honda have actually had to pause production.. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/honda-halts-production-swindon-due-parts-delays-0 I think they are due to close the Swindon plant next year anyway so perhaps they will bring that date forward.
