  1. We often get asked on here how much a build should cost. Usually this is based on £/m². Why not base it on a multiple of Architects fees. So when you want to build get an estimate of what an architect will charge, then multiply by 20. Then laugh.
  2. So hopefully that will discount any serious scaling up. Does seem odd that is has got gradually worse. Check the thermostatic valve.
  3. Have you got this far without thermally modelling your build?
  4. Are you in a hard water area and are you using a water softener?
  5. Relatively small area though. Couple of days work and it will look lovely.
  6. Isn't the key part 'diversity'. So taking scrubland, which has low biodiversity and just planting plenty of different local plants, especially ones that may attract nesting birds increases the diversity. It is the argument that golf courses use when converting farmland to waste of good building land.
  7. Here is my one serious suggestion. Can you clad and render the front with the pipework behind it.
  8. Bisexual, speaks like a (expletive deleted), acts like a prick.
  9. With an E at the end, I want to be Catholic.
  10. Welcome. So why radiators upstairs? Many have found with even a basic design, upstairs heating is unnecessary. Do you just suspect the solar gain is going to be a problem, or have you actually modelled it?
  11. Kept me going in the 70s. Such an innocent time.
  12. Solar Thermal is a one trick pony. Once your cylinder is full, it just sits there, close to boiling, waiting to go wrong. PV can be diverted to just about anything electrical, mostly without you knowing why it run at a tiny bit above grid voltage). PV does not need maintenance once fitted. You may find that you can EWI the rear of the building, councils only seemed concerned about what others see. One advantage of IWI is that you can improve airtightness much easier. Old houses are full of holes and leak heat out dreadfully.
  13. Do it before you move in. Get that done, especially if you need to reroof, integrated PV looks better and costs the same. A cavity wall is really a main wall, with the outer as a rainscreen. So be careful about filling it up. They were not really designed with thermal performance in mind.
  14. Something about adding tip to bills. Donald Duck walked into a drugstore and asked for a packet of condoms. "Certainly, sir." said the lady behind the counter, "Shall I put them on your bill?" "No way!" replied Donald Duck, "What do you think I am, a dickhead?
  15. What are you going to do to ensure sufficient airflow? My Mother's fridge eventually broke, she could not get a replacement the same size, so now has a smaller one on a plinth. It is dreadful. Liebherr, been our most reliable fridge at work, though will stop working when the kitchen goes above 30°C for a prolonged time. And we can still get spares for it easily, except for the door seal. That can take months.
  16. To save people downloading it.
  17. Welcome. First things first, do you know how much energy you currently use, in kWh. If you can split it up into space heating, water heating, cooking and general electrical usage, even better. Do you also know the construction types of the house? And your local weather regime.
  18. i used to work in a drug rehab unit Sounds like a good craic.
  19. If I know someone has had a long, special journey (and I do live miles from civilisation), I offer them tea and use of my lavatory. But never cash. Don't carry anymore these days anyway.
