I must be missing something but, it might be the wine but I am blowed if I can find Howdens prices on line - I have an account and I can log in and look at invoices etc but there does not seem to be a place on the Howdens web site to log in and see prices. What an I missing?

They are a merchant. They don't publish prices, you have to ask. One of the things I hate about merchants.

Thanks Dave, I am sure when I signed up the rep said I could see prices on-line, maybe not. I will call them in the morning and see what is what. I have Jewsons account and that shows me prices now.

My Howdens account used to show me prices but they weren't my prices ..! It was better than JP would get but not some of my "discounts" which usually were obtained by me using the words "£8 for a box of screws you must be having a laugh..." and then they became £5...

MKM price my stuff onto the system for 28 days so I just mail a list over to the branch director who updates them and they are always right. Negotiated a discount on the Velux windows last week so they beat an online specialist so I'm pretty happy.

  • 1 year later...

I just walked in and said I am an electrician, I have a kitchen to fit in a buy to let house and they opened an account.

I had to re open the account for the self build because it had timed out due to inactivity and again it was a formality.

Perhaps you would be better saying you are a joiner, as that is not a "profession" as such and there is no way to check if you are or are not really a joiner.

Speaking to a kitchen fitter yesterday and he told us to go to B&Q as Howdens prices have gone up so much in last 3 years. ?‍♂️

(Looking for a cheap utility room setup, not a kitchen per se)

I got a joiner friend to get prices from Howdens for some stuff for our build and the prices were higher than for the same thing bought online.  In the case of our doors and door linings, Howdens price was a lot higher than Doordeals, for example.

I priced up the units for my utility with Howdens recently and they were nowhere near as good value as DIY Kitchens, so I got the same ones as I've used in the kitchen from the latter. I have to say that Howdens are persistent but don't try hard with their prices.

As above: easy enough to open an account just as a self-builder, but in practice I've bought very little from them as their pricing 'game' is such a pain in the arse, and it's generally been easier to buy better elsewhere.  Got a good deal on some discounted skirting and architrave though...

Had a kitchen from them 3-4 years ago. My builder had an account - insisted on seeing their invoices, it was worse than double glazing I kid you not - 70% + discounts on kitchen cabinets etc.

Correct but they all do that. And all the headline stuff is a bucket of bollocks.

Back in the 1990s (?) Magnet switched from a price to list to a "everything discounted by x% - might have been a third or a half - off catalogue price" system.

In two quarterly lists, everything increased in price by the reciprocal of the new discount.

Wish I had kept them.

2 for 1 on Reisser screws today and CT1 at £7 a tube for coloured stuff so wasn’t complaining. Also had a £1 saw swap so swapped the manky one out of the skip ... looking at the queue when I left, most people had the same idea ..!

One thing that are good are the Howdens work gloves. They are decent enough that you don’t shred them in an hour, but also not too thick so your hands sweat ..! And at 49p +VAT a pair yesterday ... I have a few months worth ..!

@ProDave joiner not a profession wash you mouth out!

Been dealing with howdens for 10 years. Think they've lost their way recently. New concept branches and flashy displays all pushing up prices. Just took delivery of a diy kitchen impressed with quality. Also howdens will offer to match them on price but I told them to do one. 50% higher for a start they should be 50% lower being trade only!

I wasn't belittling the trade, just saying that as you don't have to join a competent persons scheme to be a joiner, anyone can rock up in the branch and say they are a joiner and they have no way to check you are other than just accept your word and open an account.

A bit like me not being an electrician (but having 40+ year old qualifications) and being able to rock up in Screwfix and get an Electricfix card.

I was using Screwfix before they introduced Electricfix and Plumbfix.  When they came on the scene they just auto enrolled me into Electricfix, presumably deducing from the fact it was mostly electrical stuff I was buying I must be an electrician.  They never asked for any documentation.
