No not Joking just pointing up a possibility; That we are actually a function of our socialisation and as such we will naturally do a lot of things that we are programmed - by our socialisation, to do. Things like the 'death of nuance', 'cancel culture', increased tribalism all, in my view, are contributing to reduced individuality and this may, I feel - I have no evidence, be changing us in ways we might come to regret.  Just a thought.

Unfortunately, even thinking, discussing or replying to this involves my baggage. We all have it. Manipulating the baggage is the key to control.

I know this. Trump knows this. Putin knows this and so do the markets.

The markets are run by greed and fear. (as we are) 

 

And back to @AliGs valid point:

 

Electricity prices will go up and down related to the reasons above. (and in the long term rise).

 

Talking about the relative price compared with previous years doesn't take into account the many different things we now have to shell out from our income, that we didn't then. 

Why oh why are we paying shareholders so we can drink water and have electricity..

Unfortunate it isn't. It certainly isn't. Thanks be for someone who is prepared to recognise that their own perspective needs - over time - to change in the light of evidence. And thus demonstrates a willingness to learn.

That @Marvin is the reason for people like me teaching (having taught for a good few years) the art of respectful scepticism.

 

Respectful Scepticism is a process,  hopefully developing into into a habit,  it  matters. A lot.

Its the respectful bit which tends to get me. I so easily ditch respect for those who reject well-founded and closely argued, peer reviewed evidence.  Thats why I think the role of Professors of the Public Understanding of Science is so important.

 

In this context (the cost of energy), we might usefully ask whether - for example - energy companies should be subject to a windfall tax?
