Para bolts pulling through
James Newport replied to James94's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I think @dpmiller is on to something. The Q&A section on screwfix says -
Don't ever let the kids watch any Tarzan films...

Those those little white nylon catches tend to have a slot in the middle into which you can insert a screwdriver. You then turn the screwdriver to adjust how far the catch projects (you might have to push the plastic ball back into the body of the catch before you can turn it). You never know, might be just enough to stop the door blowing open. You also try changing the catch for a new one of the same size - the spring inside the old one could have lost its oomph.

Online supplier of Cut 35mm Ply
James Newport replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Sorry, cannot help with the online query, but local to me (in South Wales), the smaller timber merchants will cut plywood to size - perhaps your friend can find somewhere close to him who does it. -
IFTTT (if this then that)

Who can say...they don't provide any information on the website about how you set the thing up. Get in touch with the seller and see if they have a manual for it first.- 12 replies

There are lots of waste collection companies around who'll come in and take away your rubbish, for a price, which is generally more than a skip costs. Here in Wales there's a government web page where you can look them up and check they have waste carrier's license

My neighbours are stupid AND completely mad
James Newport replied to Adsibob's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
Reinstate the fence with chainlink. Satisfies the agreement to reinstate a fence, removes your worry about the wall not being able to breathe, and all your lovely bricks are still exposed for their viewing pleasure. -
Privacy Law and Video Doorbells
James Newport replied to Ferdinand's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
And the chap was an idiot. He's not in trouble because he had a doorbell camera, but it turns out that he set up multiple cameras all trained on a shared communal car park, not his own garden. -

The register has a more in depth report (including a link to the judge's 49 page ruling). https://www.theregister.com/2021/10/13/amazon_ring_audio_recording_data_protection/ -
Costs of Retro Fit v Dig up and re-screed UFH
James Newport replied to Digger1's topic in Underfloor Heating
The materials for inscreed Ufh tend to be cheaper than overlay - worth factoring that into your decision -
Internal walls? cost effective, yet robust?
James Newport replied to Andehh's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Our stud walls are 4x2 CLS with 12.5mm plasterboard and they feel nice and solid. The uprights are roughly 400m apart. According to the chippy and the delivery driver, people try and go with 3x2 and put them 600mm apart (so it's easy to get 600mm wide rockwool in between) and that's why these doggone modern walls are so flimsy. -
Discolouration through skimmed ceiling

zinsser BIN is shellac based as well, but it's white already. -
It's additional. It is literally a little tank that gets plumbed into a heating pipe and provides space for water to expand into.

A quick check of the spec sheets for the unifi switches says that they "offers the forwarding capacity to simultaneously process traffic on all ports at line rate without any packet loss." So if you go unifi then your assumption is correct. But something worth checking though is what happens when you get VLANs involved - it's possible that extra layer of config will hit performance.
-
It will depend on the switch. It's just a computer with CPU and RAM and therefore has a limit on how much it can handle. The unifi switches are Linux boxes, so /I believe/ that everything happens inside via software, rather than some physical switch that gets set to direct traffic. I am pessimistically assuming that the 1 gig is just the theoretical max!

Fellow sixties bungalow renovator here... Digging up the floors and relaying will be expensive, but it's the best option in terms of performance, and for the finish of the floor. Inscreed UFH is far, far cheaper than the overlay systems as well, so it's worth factoring that into your decision making. Living in half of the house while the other half is renovated is hard work. The dust gets everywhere. Crap gets piled everywhere. Fridges get blocked off by piles of insulation and then have to be sent off for industrial fumigation when you finally can access them again. If you go for this approach, stick as much of your stuff in storage as possible. I turned our large converted garage into a storage unit using shelves built out of the old internal doors, and it was still a struggle. Consider all your pipes and electrics up front. You don't want to finish one half of your build, and then realise you need to add something that's needed in the other half. Even if you hire a project manager they will still your time to make decisions. I managed ours myself, but it does take up A LOT of time. There was a period of a few months when I was pretty much full time on it. Think about external wall insulation. I didn't do it for this project, and with gas prices what they are, perhaps I should have...

My plumber just fitted a standalone expansion tank for this reason.

If you are going for PVC windows you can go direct to the same window suppliers that local fitters use and buy direct. Many internet companies that offer good deals of stuff don't hold any stock, they just get it shipped to you direct from a supplier. If a supplier is happy to sell direct, you can often get a better price, and you can deal directly with them about delivery, instead of having to go back to the internet company who then promise to call you back but never do. (SIG were happy to sell direct to me for insulation, and roof tiles)

You can improve wifi performance by ditching your single wifi enabled router and replacing it with multiple wifi access points that are hardwired back to the switch. Add more access points, or more powerful ones, as you need. It's how schools/hotels/etc that need to support hundreds or thousands of clients do it. You use subnets or vlans to segregate traffic e.g. to stop dodgy chinese smart bulbs from connecting to your pc. But all that network traffic is still passing through the single switch. You can physically segregate devices though e.g. connect all your cameras to a *different* switch entirely.

A few years ago I paid £650 to have it done on a two storey terrace, £350 for scaffolding. It felt a little steep at the time, considering it took less than a day.
-
Have a drive round and find some scaffolders to chuck a few quid.

Yeah, totally. Once you've mastered making light fittings out of sushi matts anything is possible. -
Check out this guy: https://www.cctv42.co.uk/ I emailed him with some questions and he got back to me straight away.
