Why are my LED flood lights semi-illuminated when off?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Lighting
I've finally taken it apart, as it is no longer used and started to smell v v hot when I last tried to run a 1500W kettle ( I think the fan failed) and there is indeed NO earth connection whatsoever! Ta for the warning!- 29 replies

Networking now proofing
readiescards replied to dogman's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
I decided to have a network point for every device e.g. mvhr, washer, dishwasher, TV, hifi, security camera etc plus a couple in each room and door bells etc. Soon breached 24. Anyone recommend a patch panel as I can't find a low power consumption switch that supports more than 24 ports. The TP-Link switches 24 and below are sub 4watts so ideal for me. -
I've one of these: https://www.photospecialist.co.uk/brinno-mac200dn-outdoor-security-camera#group4016 Really pleased with it. While it might not have the 6 month battery life it claims it certainly last 3 or 4 months of just two D cells. I have had to dry it out a couple of times after a few days of heavy rain. I buried in a muck heap at one point. But most of its life it was hidden in a set of randomly placed bricks at entrance to the site. Few people noticed it even though it was right up front.

Was this part of your initial order or something extra they sent you at a later date? Just checked it was not on the original order (placed August 2016), they just sent it FOC when I asked

BPC sent me a large silicener when I asked them about minimising noise. Still not powered my unit up yet (same as yours) so can't report if the silicener kills the noise or not. Though I jolly hope so as can't stand buzzy noises

I also think lithium batteries will fall in price substantially as the gigafactories come online with the electric car take off. So a cheap FLA solution for a few years before swapping technology might be a good way to go.

My 55mm screed went down March 11th, approx 80 days ago but it's still showing circa 90%rh with no movement downwards I've had the laitance sanded off about 20 days ago and the heating was switched on around 15 days ago - currently running at around 21degree floor temperature. The period since the screed going down has been very dry and I've had the windows and doors open with lots of through draft. What else can I do to speed up the drying process? And how hot should I take the floor temperature?

Still 'going' offgrid but not yet made the final leap of faith on the battery decision. The Tesla Powerwall2 looked very interesting but although Tesla are installing the PW2 now they are not fully off-grid ready (i.e. no generator control I think) for a few more months. I too have been looking at the NiFe (from Bimble Solar - don't know any other suppliers) and it really appeals given what it promises. I called on the Low Carbon Trust at Brighton who have a NiFe set and they seemed really pleased with their battery bank. Sorry can't offer more than that atm contact me in 6 months!

UFH dryness/humidity checker tool recommendations
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Underfloor Heating
Thanks @ragg987 meter working great :-) As a comparison I seal a calibrated (or so it says on box) cheap digital temperature and humidity meter in a plastic bag - gave approx the same reading: -
In the end the chippy knocked something together within an hour using chipboard and some 2 by 4

I have no complaints about the company I used Screed It. Dunno of cheaper options exist. But they only had a barrow of waste at the end (which you pay for). Like said already a V quick process most of time was waiting for the trucks to turn up.

Echo (sound) dampening options - special paints?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Sound Insulation
Thanks for all the input, I'll skip the special paint and look to get some canvas paintings or something on the walls once we are in. Great idea I'll move the genny from the garage into the living room and then surround it in all the Icynene spray foam off-cuts I have! -
I remain very happy with the quality and wind proofness of my Internorm triple glazed windows but we are just being to realize what a pain inward tilt and inward opening windows are going to be w.r.t to curtain and blind installation. Anyone got tilt and turn windows and if so how did you/do you plan to dress them?

So I've watched numerous house building projects and always thought when the presenter goes into the finished dwelling and says how nice it is but in doing so you can hear an awful echo I don't want that. Now I find that with my newly plastered rooms I've got a terrible echo - immediately before any window dressings or soft furnishings but given we have UFH and therefore are putting down a hard covering (luxury vinyl tiles) I can't see there being much sound dampening provided. (FYI Ceilings are plasterboard with Icynene spray foam above which is nicely preventing sound travelling floor to floor) Question: any echo reduction techniques worth putting it in at this bare wall stage? Does sound deadening paint help reduce echo?

In the end I went with this: https://www.keyliteroofwindows.com/categories/loft-ladders While it is probably ok thermally it is not that great in ergonomic terms I feel, very stiff lock & very stiff ladder to unfold. I went for one that fits between my 600mm centre trusses but this has given a rather narrow entry. In summary it is ok but if you are using it every day go for something different
