The tale of the sale of our old house
ProDave replied to Jeremy Harris's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
That is a bugger. This covenant thing annoys me. Personally I think all the covenants on a property should be included in the sales particulars. If I was buying a house and found out for instance a "no caravans or trailers" covenant I would probably pull out. A buyer really should know these things very early on. When you find out, I would make a list of the covenants and make buyers aware of them when they view. Better they don't offer, than offer then withdraw later. Hopefully all the work, searches etc can just be used next time. I would still want to know what their concern is and see if it can be covered with an indemnity policy. (we broke a "no building" covenant on a previous house and an indemnity policy kept the buyer happy) -
The trouble with safe zones, is the appear to be an official secret, and nobody else apart from electricians knows about them. So Joe public does as above, as it just looks right if you hang the picture exactly on the centreline of the switch.

The best solution I can see is replace the entire run across your land with a new mdpe pipe going around, not over or under your leach field. Then you don't have to disturb that. A lot of work, but you should only have to do it once and there will be no problem. At his expense of course.
-
There's probably enough sway in that to move side to side a bit then. Might not strictly stay in safe zones though. I can never understand why electricians do it that way up and down to each socket. I think some don't actually know you can go horizontally from socket to socket. Just makes much more sense to me, easier to do, easier to modify or add an extra socket, and uses less cable. I did have a stand up argument with a joiner on a job 2 years ago when he was trying to tell me I could not do it that way and I must change it. It remained as it was.

Did you take photos before the plasterboard when on? I try and run as much as possible in a continuous run. You would know I have managed that by instead of 2 separate wires emerging from the hole, would be one wire coming out then looping back in. That would make it very easy to move a socket. Do you have a photo? Assuming he ran the cables around the room at socket height, the worst case it the link between the 2 sockets may need replacing with a longer bit of cable. On the other hand if he's an "up and down" man it may be a bit more involved.

Urinals - anyone ever considered them?

And why is a sea toilet call the heads? -
Urinals - anyone ever considered them?
ProDave replied to Vijay's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
If your aim is good you could pee into one of the cockpit drains, but might get complaints when things get smelly if you don't flush it through well with water. Or stop messing about and use the heads. -

I rest my case. Pee in the bucket in the cockpit where you can still keep control of the helm. I am actually thinking of buying a travel john to try out If I get this one, SWMBO can use it as well. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-Urine-Pee-Bottle-Unisex-Men-Women-1000ML-Urinal-Storage-Travel-Camping/273024948471?epid=2255543834&hash=item3f918e18f7:g:OkcAAOSwMGVaW161 -
Getting rid of ads and speeding up browsing

I just use a browser ad blocker. I have only found 1 website that refused to load until I white listed it to allow the adverts. -
Urinals - anyone ever considered them?
ProDave replied to Vijay's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Just remember @JSHarris I heard a statistic that the majority of MOB incidents are men pumping ballast and falling in. Personally I prefer the bucket then empty it over the side, and SWMBO uses the same bucket, so no discrimination. -
Why did they not fill the corner with grout? Are they expecting relative movement between those walls?

I sit down for a pee in the night to save putting a light on. I just know "aiming in the dark" for a stand up pee might not end well. -
We have a similar "over sized" bath. SWMBO wanted a big one, the specification being she can submerge with "no bits sticking out" of the water. Ours is a plastic one we got for £200 from another local self builder after his SWMBO changed her mind. The list price was something like £500 It takes a while to fill as the flow rate from the cheap floor standing bath filler is a bit slow, but she has not complained about that yet.

The whole point of a urinal is to avoid the lid up / down argument, so why get one with a lid? I was told I can have one. In the garage. -
You mention wall joints. You are not talking about those plastic strips the tile shops try and sell you to do corners, and worse still, the ones they try and sell you to finish off the bottom? Work of the devil, should be banned from sale as unfit for purpose.

I have an electric one that can be used single handed., but it is still easier with 2 hands.

Assumption is the mother of all,
ProDave replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
When Scottish water turned up to connect our water and make the road crossing, they cut through the tarmac and pulled that up, only to find a thick concrete road underneath. Much cursing and swearing and off to fetch a concrete breaker. Good job the road crossing was a fixed price. -
If you are looking for a recommendation, we have Protect VP400, chosen by the builder as it can be left exposed for a long time. It was close on a year before the roof git tiled, and the walls of our sun room are still clad in this (with no outer covering) 3 years later with no problems.

We have both. the ladies wanted the rainfall thing. Dreadful invention. I want a shower that I can have wetting my body, and wetting my head when I choose it to do so the rainfall you can't stop it wetting your head and I hate that. I won't be using it and as far as I am concerned it is redundant. but I am outvoted so we have both.

If it is a garden office, the last thing I would be building it from is blocks. I would want a well insulated timber framed construction, which as I am sure we have discussed many times, could very easily be built as a portable building so exempt from building control.

I gave up trying Roller Door UK. They never answered their phone, and then a negative review popped up on ebay. I tried a couple more, and ended up placing an order with Roller Doors Direct in Scunthorpe, they are another one that lists on ebay. £505 including delivery for a 55mm insulated roller door made to measure. Paid for in full by credit card so I should have some protection if it fails to turn up. I will keep you posted.

Rationel from ADW in Cumbernauld. Of the 6 quality window supplier I got quotes from, they were the cheapest and second best in terms of quality. Only beaten quality wise very slightly by Internorm who were twice the price.

I must ask my neighbour how his situation ended. He has the "Dounereay line" passing over his garden on a temporary wayleave. About 2 years ago he served the 1 year notice to have it removed. It is still there and indeed they have done some upgrade work on it. I suspect there was a settlement involving ££££ to keep it.
