Born in Oxford then lived near Stadhampton. So other side of the county.

Don't do what I saw once, they bought a mat too big, and rolled up the spare under the bath.

I think @Ferdinand suggestion above is best. He makes the valid point that the front gets the sun so that's where you want the living room.

Hi and welcome. I wonder which part of Oxfordshire, that's where I come from.

I thought I had posted this reply yesterday so here goes try number 2. But someone else has already made the same suggestion. How about extending that front gable ended bit forwards, given the staggered nature of the houses in the street, I think there is a fair chance you would be allowed to extend forwards to the building line of your right hand neighbour. That would give you extra living space and enable you to re jig the old dining room into another bedroom. If you could incorporate the kitchen in that extension that would further the scope for repurposing the old rooms.

That looks like just some current transformers but 3 of them for a 3 phase system, to do much the same as my simple device. No mention of the electricity meter chip. And no mention of code to support it. I think using the electricity meter chip is crucial to a simple repeatable design.

Interesting idea. Building it and putting it into production comes with all the overheads of certifying it for the EMC directive etc and CE marking it. Not something I am prepared to do for what is likely very small production runs. There may be some merit in pooling a common design as a "Open Dump controller" (would need to choose a better name, but must start with the word Open) for people to build themselves. If you are going down that route then the design based on the electricity meter chips is the one to go for, rather than my rather simple arduino only design.

I wonder what it was about the house that made it so dry? We are 150 square metres, 3 humans and one feline. Plain ordinary house no special measures and RH sits between 50 and 60% most if the time.

Lining a wall with plywood: how thick should the ply be?
ProDave replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Joinery
I wired a whole house that was finished in OSB. Yes it looked carp (the wall finish that is not the wiring) And it all had to be painted with that expensive fireproofing treatment. -
I am not even sure that bend is meant for UFH pipe. It looks like a bend for electrical conduit to me?

Thank you, I will see how that appears on my account

Best way to get a new phone line installed
ProDave replied to AliG's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
The whole phone line thing is cheap, at least compared to a water or electricity connection. Like you, Open Reach provided the cable and duct and identified where their phone cable was, it happened to be running parallel to and 6" from the electricity cable. So the cable was laid, and left coiled up on the grass verge above the phone cable. Then you have to order a new line from BT and pay their "connection charge" which was about £65 Then it turns to shambles. BT missed the connection date. Then when they did come, they did a bit of work, and then said they need access to another junction which was right on the edge of the road, so they need to order traffic lights, that was another 2 weeks. And so it went on, the shambles that was trying to get a working pair from the cable in the road all the way to the exchange. The delay meant we got the connection fee refunded and a discount for the first 12 months. -
So he's building a porch on top of the concrete that has just the driveway surface, and already cracked? And what is he going to do with that air brick he is about to cover? Where does he tie his horse in the morning?

Plan not working. care to try again?

You mean the whole site has been stripped to rock? If there was still some (thin) top soil then you could dig trenches down to the bedrock and pour concrete strip founds. But if the whole site is stripped I would say that makes things awkward? Do you have mains drainage?

Network cable and safe zones
ProDave replied to bissoejosh's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
I personally am not convinced safe zones were that well thought out. Consider a plain wall that has a socket in the middle. Someone wants to hang a picture. Now to make things look right, they will centre the picture hook on the socket...... Can anyone spot the problem?- 6 replies

If you get seasick on the average crossing to Stornoway you are not a good sailor. We will shortly be doing the crossing from Aberdeen to Lerwick.

Go over as foot passengers for the day. Probably cheaper than driving to Inverness to find a supermarket.

Unless regs have changed, ask him to show you where a WC with a window needs an extract. A utility room will.

The place to go to get a ferry to Stornoway.

No mention of network cables in wiring regs. Put them where you like. Same for A/V cables.- 6 replies

The other end of the A835 from me. Welcome to the forum. We look forward to finding out more.

So garage is at living room end. Is there anything at the bedroom end to stop you extending there?
-
If wanting to keep single storey then the most obvious is extend the corridor through bedroom 2 to lead into an extension built onto the left hand end. Bedroom 2 obviously gets smaller, would it then be too small? This would add the extra space without upsetting any of the views from the existing windows. EDIT: Just saw above post. forget that idea. The only thing I can think of now is a second storey, or extend out the back of Bedroom 2 / toilet / laundry to make it an L shaped bungalow, with some re jigging of those 3 existing rooms to make sense of it. Which side is the garage on?
