How does your garden grow?
daiking replied to recoveringbuilder's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
The growing season has tended toward being a disaster. I have has some runner beans, lettuces, courgettes and cucumbers and a couple of chillies but most wasted. But the tomatoes and aubergines have got nowhere. My outside tomatoes are turning brown from the top. Lost half my courgettes to rotting from the end and even a couple of cucumbers have grown yellow - there green ones. After such a promising spring, the summer in the North West has been poor. too cold and wet for too long and then fried everything with one hot week and torrential rain. I was away for the late August storm which killed several plants including knocking over a very promising chilli plant. Snapped it clean off. Have filled the council green waste bin this week, will be doing again for a few weeks to get rid. Next year will need a bigger covered growing area if I want to expect much more. Need to think about anything that needs autumn planting for next year now. Maybe fruit or some patio shrubs. -
So if you look at the OP, the panel in front of the neighbours green shed has totally collapsed. As the first fence post (the left) is a bit wonky it needed refitting anyway. To find out what’s really going on, I dug it out. Easier said than done. But done, it is. Looks like these short posts are 4’ 8” long with 18” in the ground. Therefore it’s safe to say it would be an unreasonable and potentially unsafe bodge even in this relatively sheltered position to just put taller panels (5’ or 6’) in between these posts. picture taken after back filling the 2 massive holes I dug. The post was positioned at the end of the concrete gravel board I put back in its place for tidiness. The post wasn’t in the remaining hole you can see under the concrete mass at the bottom of the post

Well ackshually, it did seem to make a difference ?♂️ Run off not a problem as it was only retail diluted stuff (Westland Resolva) and it goes to drain. Well it didn’t for a long time, it was spilling onto the grass as the drain was 95% blocked.

Washing Machine / Dishwasher Cleaner
daiking replied to Onoff's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
Don't think I've ever put salt in our dishwasher, its nearly 5 years old. And only a thimble of vinegar would fit in the tab slot - 50ml? Occasionally throw in a 'cleaner', never specifically cleaned the rotors ^ normal dishwasher owner/operator -
This isn’t a house and I am not an expert but I don’t think I would in such a small space with no vent system. Allow moisture out but not in - breathable membrane under outer layer but no vapour barrier under the internal layer Someone on here tried to insulate a shed with canned foam and I recall that afterwards it was just permanently a sweaty mess.

Size concerns: Want to push the width to max but difficult to survey space to work out. That sketch in the OP is indicative not 100% sure that size would fit so can’t just plonk a small square cabin in the plan Base concerns: Trees - will be close to a couple of trees at diagonal opposite corners. One tree big, one free fair size. Timber - good in that reduced digging near trees but will raise the building by 150mm and already pushing the PD height limits as cabin options we like are 2.8m tall. Concrete - not looking forward to digging that area by hand due to trees and previous vegetation. 100mm x 15 Sq m so a nominal 1.5m3. Would prob need pump for readimix and way over what I could do as a first concrete base. Hoping it’s dry this weekend to have a gook look. (Priority job is to take out a wonky fence post. See how big they are and whether 1m above ground will hold a 6ft panel ?)

Revised budget Base £600 (half of cost in initial estimate as half size-ish) 12-15sq m log cabin £4000 50mm PIR floor + roof £250 Floor £300 Guttering £100 £5250 Initially electrics will be an extension lead ? but that’s prob £500 to add in the future.

40% off as a starter and haggle down from there was the experience 5 years ago

That's what I was hoping but I feared I was being deluded to suit my circumstances. My boundaries are not square, meeting at approx 30 degree angle. Therefore while the rear corners of a square building would be within 2m of the boundary, the gable end is many metres away from the rear boundary. Sounds like I might get away with it.
-
So this permitted development outbuilding rule about height within 2m of boundary Does this just mean that the height of the building within 2m of your fence must be below 2.5m but can be higher 2m+ into your garden or that: If a building is within 2m of your fence at any point, it can’t be taller than 2.5m at all?

Of all the things, I’ve found a Crittal window seal profile that I think would fit. Need to order some and give it a go. Don’t fancy another winter with a draughty hallway.

I have a grey trap set that lets go every 12 months or so and floods the cupboard. The hassle/benefit in changing it is so marginal, it’s been there 5 years and counting. I finally fixed the outlet pipe to the wall outside this summer so I’m hoping that less movement at the grey/white interface will reduce the frequency of failure. But it’s not that joint that fails. Obviously my kitchen fitter was a real pro and his MO is to somehow squeeze the size of the white pipe so it wedges into the joint. Here: Its the joint at the shirt leg of the U-bend that lets go.

There are some nice cabins there (not sheds). Costs going up ?

As long as the pampas grass is still on show you’ll be fine.

That was a first stab, empty shell, no fit out. So would have been up to £12k easily if done - not that it will now!

multi-use space. Just a small bench and a few dumb bells/ weights she said, no machines.

So, following on from my micro office thread, this plan is also dead but will be reborn as a much smaller (12sq m), low spec, off the shelf solution. one thing my wife has requested somewhere for some gym equipment. No serious weights but I think this is pushing me to look at a concrete base for the sub floor.
