ASHP installed together with existing heating system
Gone West replied to Bruno's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
I'm no expert but I thought if you're using two different heat sources with very different temperatures you should use a thermal store. Don't know if that's what you mean by a buffer tank but buffer tanks are usually much smaller. I'm not sure how well thermal stores work with ASHPs. -
I don't have to any more, thank goodness. I used to say 'it'll be years yet' and I was never wrong and no one was ever disappointed.

Charred timber cladding - anyone used it?
Gone West replied to goatcarrot's topic in Building Materials
Is it sealed or like charcoal so if you lean against it comes off on your clothes. -
Spray insulation for timber framed new build?
Gone West replied to davejura's topic in Heat Insulation
I'm sorry, I'm obviously missing something but if the studs are 145mm deep and with external racking why not 145mm of insulation? -
Spray insulation for timber framed new build?
Gone West replied to davejura's topic in Heat Insulation
I have a 350mm I-beam timber frame with Icynene spray foam. It's very good for heat insulation and airtightness but it's not cheap and there's a lot of tidying up required afterwards. 130m2 floor area, two storey, and it was just under £10,000 for walls and roof about five years ago. I can look up the details if you're interested. -
No I didn't mean that, I didn't notice it had that type of long edge. Is that how they're joined together length ways or something.

Can't you make an outer frame with mitred corners and then board up to the frame.

ESP Ecocent Air to Water Heat Pump inside?
Gone West replied to ashthekid's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
I have a Genvex Combi 185L which is a ventilation system with a built in EASHP which heats my DHW and provides warm air which supplements the normal heating provided by electric towel rails in the bathrooms. The towel rails keep the bathrooms at around 24C and the ventilation system transfers the heat around the house. This type of system only works for space heating because the house is very highly insulated and airtight. -
I asked for oversailing cables to be moved so I could build my house. I didn't mention specific poles but they came up with a scheme which involved moving poles and they showed me and I accepted. It was with UKPN and eleven years ago so maybe they are getting more stroppy now. If you just ask for the cable to be moved they will have to remove that pole.

There's a similar type by Joule, don't know if it's a copy or not. -
Oil to ASHP decision - RHI and changes next year
Gone West replied to RichardL's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Yes exactly my point. What happens if another part of the ASHP heating system is not aesthetically acceptable to you because it is as a result of it being a low temperature system. In that instance it may well be adequately sized but not suitable because it's a low temperature system. If it weren't for the governments intervention in paying people to fit ASHPs in old properties I doubt there would be much interest in ASHPs. They are not the panacea that the government would like to think they are. -
Oil to ASHP decision - RHI and changes next year
Gone West replied to RichardL's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
The ASHP may be correctly sized but for many reasons it may not be possible to correctly size the rest of the system in order to heat the house effectively. I may not want quad panel radiators sticking out into the room or walls covered in single panel radiators in order to meet the heating requirement for especially cold periods. Designing a heating system is more than just the physics. -
It doesn't look like a new setup, so has it always been poor. How long have you been using the system like that. I would measure the pressure and flow rate.

Oil to ASHP decision - RHI and changes next year
Gone West replied to RichardL's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Our oil boiler in the old bungalow lasted over 30 years. -
Perhaps the PRV is not working correctly. Doesn't the PRV have a block with a threaded hole for connecting a pressure gauge. Without knowing the pressure I don't see how you can find the best solution, maybe adjusting the PRV first just to see if it's working.

Oil to ASHP decision - RHI and changes next year
Gone West replied to RichardL's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Welcome to the forum. Well he would wouldn't he. I would wait until the oil boiler is on it's last legs and then consider changing to an ASHP. The longer you wait the more common they will become and cheaper they will be. I don't know where in the country you are but I can't envisage the running costs of an ASHP being cheaper than an oil boiler for a couple of years at least especially if you are in a cold part of the country. -

Hello, from two Lake District Passive House wannabees
Gone West replied to LakeDistrictEugene's topic in Introduce Yourself
Yes, very true. When we dismantled our old bungalow we disposed of the bathroom and kitchen fittings, bricks, concrete blocks, floorboards and studwork on Freecycle and Freegle. We never used a skip at all. -
Basic ASHP Efficiency Questions
Gone West replied to soapstar's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
We have an EASHP providing warm air heating which only supplements our heating provided by three electric towel rails. I don't use a normal ASHP providing wet heating but I would follow what @Gav_P says as ASHPs can't be used as a direct swap for an oil or gas boiler and they aren't cheap to run when it's cold. -
Basic ASHP Efficiency Questions
Gone West replied to soapstar's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
IMO yes. When you need the most heat they are usually the least efficient. I would only fit an ASHP in a well insulated airtight house and I would use gas or oil in an old, poorly insulated house. Whatever source of heating is used, it needs to be sized correctly. -
If you're in an old house without the option of gas I would stick with oil. I would fit an external system boiler in place of the combi it would be quieter and more efficient. Try reducing your usage by insulating, draughtproofing etc. https://www.tradeplumbing.co.uk/grant-vortex-blue-external-floor-standing-regular-oil-boiler-erp.html

We are a couple of miles from the sea and we have different types of hedging around the garden. We bought a pallet of Oleaster, one metre high, a couple of years ago and they took well and are easy to trim. They are evergreen and have small very fragrant flowers that the bees like and later berries for the birds. https://www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/oleaster-elaeagnus-x-ebbingei.html#aELA

Well done, that's good. I did some runs of the PHPP for my house design with different air airtightness values and once you get down to around 1ach the advantages of going lower are quite small.
