I don't like tea either. I'll drink tea or coffee if out visiting but never at home. I am partial to a hot chocolate occasionally especially the dark ones.

I don't like the stuff.

Kent CC have recently started charging at their contractor run tips for rubble, soil, plasterboard and car tyres. I think there is going to be a challenge to the charges as being illegal, don't suppose anything will come of it.

How can I stop birds coming down my flue?
Gone West replied to ProDave's topic in Stoves, Fires & Fireplaces
We had the same problem with the oil boiler flue in the old bungalow. I wrapped stainless steel mesh around it, as @Onoff has suggested. -
Hope you're feeling better now. Thanks for the link. My son-in-law's friend is the sparky who signed off my house installation and will sign off this work. The supply is indeed PME (TN-C-S) according to the sticker. The three core 6mm2 SWA is connected to the house CU through a 45A RCBO and is connected to a temporary box on a post in the garden at the moment feeding the sewage treatment plant. I will be moving it from the post to the shed. Are you saying I could use the SWA earth and a TT earth together, without problems as the TT is just another PME earth?

Welcome to the forum and ask away.

Thanks for all the advice. Are there any comments on the video suggestions?

I have a 6mm2 three core SWA cable that I am running to my shed from the CU in the house. The supply to the house is TN-C-S. I was planning to use one of the cores as the earth and also the steel wire as the earth. I watched a video where it states that it is ok in most instances to use a two core and use the steel wire as the earth. In my case it is more complicated as my shed is metal. In the video it states for TN-C-S the earth should be 10mm2 for a metal shed but doesn’t explicitly say that it can be made up of 6mm2 copper core and the steel wire. I could use an earth rod for the shed but as he says on the video why bother when the DNO provides a perfectly good earth. What is the view of my plan? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvENsVUhDUs

@susieo Hi, welcome to the forum. Is the problem with the polycarbonate roof that the room over heats or that the roof leaks?

We use a pack of blocks around every 3 to 4 weeks and pay £5 a pack from our local supplier. We bought our Harveys Crown from https://www.fountainsofteners.co.uk/harveys-crown-water-softener-twin-tank-non-electric-15mm-installation-kit-c2x17510096 How much salt used will depend upon water hardness and usage. Our hardness is around 320ppm.

Ran ours through conduit which we cable tied to the metal webs.

We have Rehau Geneo insulated frames with 3G. They're still doing their job seven years later.

I think you were probably unlucky with your TF build. We have a portal timber I-beam frame and have vaulted ceilings upstairs in some rooms. We don't have any movement or creaking but as you say it's not a good idea to change plans half way through with a TF.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with the project.

I was a member of the AECB for several years a while back. Our local group is still thriving and they used to arrange interesting meetings at local pubs and visits to low energy buildings. Ten years ago the forum was a good place to pick up useful information but it has gradually declined over the years and is now useless. I did download a lot of their silver and gold construction details many years ago.

Stencilled Patio - interesting
Gone West replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
The whole thing looks a bit 'shabby chic' to me, so the fence fits in ok. Not my cup of tea at all.- 1 reply

Had a petrol Flymo for several years, was as tough as old boots, which is what you need if you don't want to cut your big toe off.

Extension/loft builder to handle new build?
Gone West replied to R Fleming's topic in Introduce Yourself
I think that most people would be very pleased if their builders were as good as the reviews you have listed. I can think of one contributor on this forum who used a large building company who would have been very happy to have received a service that you have indicated, unfortunately she didn't. As for Checkatrade, I used a window company registered with them and was unhappy with some after sales service and due to the insistence of Checkatrade the window company sorted out the problem I had. -
Permitted planning - moving a fence adjacent to a road
Gone West replied to Bob Loblaw's topic in Planning Permission
I would do it in stages. Initially I would plant an identical hedge to your neighbours continuing it around the boundary of your property. If there are no complaints I would apply to replace the hedge with a 2m fence. If it was refused I would grow the hedge higher and see what happens. Presumably you could remove the wall at any time. -
Warranty and Passive Slab Foundations
Gone West replied to davidc's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
None at all. We have an EPS PH slab and a warranty. -
I bought one of those and it's still sitting in it's box unused. I have never found it necessary to increase the extract fan speed.
