  1. I've sat in meetings with some of the stellar names in the world of architecture and some of the anal requests they make and that come to fruition are mind boggling. One was concerned at seeing the end of a series of 2mm wall / 18mm dia st/st tubes that sat inboard of the curtain wall facade 3m apart.....FIVE FLOORS UP! "Pinpoints of light" was the phrase used I believe. I just said we could heat treat to colour the st/st but wouldn't guarantee it wouldn't affect the properties of the 316. Another ignored a B.S. COP and the major builder etc all just bowed down to it. (The system doesn't comply to this day). I've had drawings covered in their red pen comments batting back our design suggestions. We do what they ask then when it doesn't work change it later and charge the earth. They're often treated like Gods the big names.
  2. To get a draw string through I favour a square of plastic bag with a small hole in the centre. I thread a string through and knot / tape it back to the bag. I then form it into a sort of cone and insert in one end of the pipe. Then attach the vac the other end with some duct tape to make a seal. Job done.
  3. Ta. Now then, orientation, the place would be best in the far corner of the plot. To suit the garden it would put the principle elevation facing SW, possibly SSW. I believe that's pretty good in terms of solar gain etc?
  4. Is there any reason against using 150mm of good old mixed hard core, suitably compacted under a 300mm EPS insulating layer for something like this? This rather than say Type 3. It's just that it's "on site" so to speak in the form of already broken up old paths and slabs thus zero cost for a start. I always worry about vermin like rats and also foxes, badgers, rabbits etc making burrows under such a nice "warm" slab. I've masses of old greenhouse glass. Would a layer of that over the area, subsequently smashed up before the hard core "work"? Cheers.
  5. A Place In The Sun.....phwoar!
  6. Charlie Luxton - got a BA in Architecture from Oxford then an MA from the Royal College of Art. Anna Ryder Richardson - "became a fitness instructor after an early career in modelling"
  7. I like to get them in when I can. Fine by me if someone wants to take them down.
  8. "Concludes at 5pm"....I'd be way finished by then! Not the most flattering pic you could have found!
  9. Julia Kendell from DIY SOS..... I wonder what she's wearing on a scorcher of a day like this...
  10. If you want steep then check out Baldwin St in Dunedin (NZ). World's steepest street I think. I've been up it in a 4WD and it just felt like it was going to tip back! Going back down wasn't too pleasant either: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_Street
  11. No I think it's a CATRY switch. Chinese in origin: http://www.globalcompaniess.com/info18_shenzhen-catry-electric-co-ltd-126579.html
  12. Rocket switch? Like these?
  13. Tell me about it! Add in Site of Special Scientific Interest.....
  14. It's close smooth to the touch and you can touch a fingernail to it and see the reflection. Really is a thing if beauty. I read up a little bit about it. Something I think said not good in kitchens as it doesn't do well with grease spots? Different types too, one you can wipe with a wet cloth, another with a soapy wet cloth. Whatever it's hugely impressive, like one huge piece of marble.
  15. Tbh I thought Peter's Venetian plaster was MARBLE.
  16. Yep, you just want to touch and wonder at it! See it and you'll want it. I've touched Peter's...
  17. So..... @Nickfromwales reckons a 32mm pipe / tank connector from my Geberit cistern to any DIY "pan extract" system. But where to put it? Either side is thick rib. In the top of the "box"? (The M16 washer serving as a nom 32mm dia thingy in the photo). Cheers
  18. Virtually had a new washing machine (Hotpoint) yesterday all under the service contract. It had that many parts! Well pleased we kept that up. Still, if the missus will insist on buying shoite!
  19. So what happens now you leave it all pressured as a "soak" test? Is there a gauge somewhere so you can see if it drops? EDIT: Just read Terry's post asking the same thing!
  20. Just realised why ALL our felt is rotten along the bottom and in turn the tops of the wodden facias thanks to this. Lack of double row/double cover/starter course!
  21. Is the roof / hip angle slightly different to the original maybe?
  22. The whole place is that tidy believe me!
  23. Nice one. They're keen coming out your way! They could easily meet with an "accident" on those narrow lanes..... EDIT: Tbh their own house is probably a draughty shithole and they want a warm up in nice surroundings!
  24. Christ! There'll be squirrels getting in! Still got to decide what to connect it to in the loft in the absence of any MVHR.
  25. I'll throw in the wife's recipe for lemon ice cream! Negotiations #Not The Nine O'clock News style!
