I think that was the previous one that blew/welded.

Well just goes to show how really lucky I was with my builder, no problems at all and really nice to have around (no wonder he is booked up for about two years)

From my (limited) knowledge the protection posted by @Onoff is basically a spark quench. š¤·āāļø

Yes thatās my plan B, but the Reed works on the bench and I am going to protect it like @Onoff posted above, the new Reed will be inside the waterproof casing of the motor box. š

Recommendation recommendation recommendation.

@Onoff, Great bit of info, will order bits and get them installed, thanks a lot š

Great my 5 amp Reed switch works on my bench test bed, now to wire it in the actual gate opener etc. the Reed switch does spark a little on closure but the write up on the Reed says āspecial rhodium contacts are used to avoid corrosion and wearā. š¤

Yup blockboard,,,,Blockboard (or Laminboard) is classified as a plywood due to itās construction of at least 3 veneers (face, core & back). However, it differs from plywood as itās core is comprised of strips of solid timber or veneer laid on edge which is bonded and then faced with veneers on each side. āwood always movesā well I built a bookcase some 40 years ago from some Russian pine I scrounged from a restoration project on a listed building when I was also working there and its not moved a millimetre in all that time.

Personal recommendation every time, ask any potential contractor for a couple of telephone numbers for previous customers, if they wonāt give them walk away, when I started my building career āsmall timeā I started with family and friends, soon I had more work than I could do, I never advertised (I did get a magnetic sign fir my van when parked up but never got any work from it),

Should have come here earlier (like I did and learnt shed loads despite being a small time builder) Just shows how behind the curve these āprofessionalā are š¤·āāļø

I donāt think thatās a good idea, do you? š± Yes, I read some time ago that German companies mostly still run apprenticeships and are family run rather than big corp and university degree oriented. when I was building a garage at a former house my 10 year old son asked how I was making decisions on what to do, I told him certain things are dictated (building regs) but mostly it was common sense, his reply was āwhen I grow up I want to go to university and get a degree in common senseā. Bless himā¦ā¦

Yes you canāt cure stupid.

I can't drill straight holes for the life of me

Yes very good idea, but they donāt say what price!! (Even with 40% off) -
I actually used Oak as the lintel (given to me by my builder as he had it spare) even tho it was well seasoned it shrank about 5mm across its 200mm making it loose in the brickwork (bricks didnāt fall down) packed it with 5mm oak wedges underneath to keep it tight, stopped shrinking after 2 years.
-
Oak will always move but less so with well seasoned stuff. I would mount the oak on/In front of the plaster so it can move, even paint the plaster first if possible.

I know itās been said here before but a previous member designed and installed his own smart weather compensation heat controls but took them out and replaced with a single thermostat and found it just as good, main reason was if he passed away his wife and any future owner would not know how to repair or replace it and tech goes out of date quickly. I too found my a single room stat in the hallway a simple solution, far better than the over complicated controller I bought (and failed to fully understand).

Well as I have said before I was really lucky my main contractor (two chaps) were great, understood what I wanted, didnāt argue ( but has some nice discussions) and did a really good job. Only subbed out a sparky (good friend of the builder) and a painter (cuz I hate painting) and I did everything else. I have recommended my builder to a few people and offered to show them what they did for me. however. working as a small time builder previously I was so careful subbing out, only using people that had done good work before me before as some are dire!!!!

BUT WHAT IF IT IS A LIVE GAS LINE!!!!!
-
I came across similar in a customers house, I got a gas safe chap to visit and cap it, not worth gambling with.
-
+1, my kitchen was similar in size to @crispy_wafer

Some People donāt realise that low voltage often needs bigger cables !!! (Less volts = more Amps)
-
Yes it works very well, I hate corners in kitchens with cupboards you canāt get into. Itās just timber framing and plasterboard, took a lot of working out to end up with the cooker fit with the worktop cut at 45ā. That cooker hood is re a circulation one but easy to make direct outside. It also gave a great place to route water pipes etc up to the next floor š

With my build, despite having the room you have I went with a peninsular and think it works better š¤·āāļø
