Has a safety boot saved you?

A good example of the right kind of protective clothing for the right job ( I will remember this one when I chop logs).- 17 replies

I second everything Jeremy said above, I have come across soooo many inconsistencies over the years. Don’t get me going about planners.,!! ( took two years to get planning and that was only successful when I appealed to the Secretary of State who said our local planners were not abiding by their own policies!!!). On this build the Building inspector's first words were “ I am not from the planning department” he has obviously had grief from people who thought he was from planning. Anyway I sussed him out on his first visit (whilst praying he was a reasonable chap) and he was ?, I mentioned “green building methods and materials” and he was up for it, even asking for a link to this forum as I told him about it and the wealth of knowledge it held.

I confess to buying boots but failed to wear them as they were so chunky I could not feel my feet and stumbled around a lot, settled for safety trainers which were great. I suppose once heavy stuff is finished it’s not an issue, currently ( at the painting stage) I am wearing my old slip on hush puppies- 17 replies

Glulams are depressingly light-weight
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
I’ve put in heavier glulams than that with just two of us. Just need to make sure you have something to rest it on in stages.- 13 replies

Site footwear when working at height.
joe90 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
In my younger days ? I used to wear my climbing shoes when scampering around on roof tiles ( very sticky soft “ slick” soles), now I require scaffolding. -

Glulams: cutting and drilling them
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
I have cut slots in Glulams before and drilled holes. I do have a large circular saw tho?!, best to measure at least three times or use C.C. advise above , drilling at exactly 90’ can be challenging. -

I don’t think so, fixings exist through the sheets, ridge in place, it’s the sort of thing I would do in my twenties!!!- 34 replies

What about cooling
joe90 replied to Visti's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
If I remember correctly I got a RH sensor ( or there is one in the unit already) ( it’s been such a long process I can’t remember?), but I do fancy a CO2 sensor, it’s just not on my “to do list “yet. -
What about cooling
joe90 replied to Visti's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Interesting that the unit Charlie was talking about had a co monitor to up the fan speed if the air got “ stale”, I suggested this a long time ago during my planning stage but thoughts were generally that it was not needed. I still think I would rather the MVHR switched on if the building required it, and not running 24/7, a bit like a room stat for central heating! I know fir a fact that er indoors will be opening windows on sunny days, it’s in her DNA. -
What about cooling
joe90 replied to Visti's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
The guys that made our windows has a glass technician and when I mentioned our phase two conservatory he can supply coated solar reflective glass to cut solar input, I will concentrate on this when phase one is complete ( we move in!!!) which hopefully will be in about a months time? -
I am in the same boat regarding using E7, I won’t be able to tell till I have some usage figures to work on with what’s available in my neck of the woods. Regarding solar, I think it would ruin my cottage look, did consider putting it on the roof of my garage but at my age I may not get to the payback period ( be different if I was younger) . So in a years time time I can look at some actual data and make a decision.

No, she agrees, no point in having an energy efficient house to save “ fuel” then spend it on running a tumble drier when we have other means to do the same job for free!
-
I have the paslode ones, first and second fix and they are great, yes the gas can be a problem in the cold but I put the gas canister in my cup of tea or coffee and it warms it up nicely? no probs!

Simple AAV and Extractor Vent Questions
joe90 replied to Tin Soldier's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Yup, my soil vent to the sewer ( treatment plant) is on the side of my garage ( highest point) and in the house I have a 50mm AAV just below bedroom ceiling level to prevent vacuum ( as Jeremy describes above) . This means I have no thermal bridge ( pipes out to a stack) and the house has no external pipework stuck to the walls ( one of my pet hates). -
Ah but we have a large south facing conservatory ( well we will have), also MVHR which I am told is good for drying clothes indoors, Plus she informs me that drying stuff on a line in the fresh air is best.?plus we have planned all the rooms and not included a tumble drier.
-
I have told er indoors that we are NOT having a tumble drier in our new house.?

DIY scaffolding: wind - the enemy
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
When I used to climb poles for the post office ( pre BT) I was always getting in trouble for, not tying the ladder to the pole, not wearing a belt( if the job was quick I just used to stand on one foot and wrap the other leg around the pole), the best one was my ladder was not long enough to reach a house facia once so I parked my commer van on the pavement and put the ladder up from the roof of the van ( it was safe because the ladder rested against the ladder rack) my boss came round the corner and just stood there with his mouth open?.- 34 replies

I wish my wife would fill the machine with a full load before switching it on!!!, I use 60’ for bedding and towels but 40 for anything else. If we decide to go E7 ( when the build has finished and we know our usage) I shall insist the machine is used overnight.
