Where and how best to install temperature sensor in UFH screed
joe90 replied to readiescards's topic in Boffin's Corner
Ah, using off cuts of under floor heating pipe as duct for sensors , brillIant idea (but too late for me)?. Got loads if anyone wants some? -
Like Jeremy above I think local conditions apply, we may have been ok because it’s mostly windy here (near coast) but Jeremy is in a valley that suffers from stagnant air (bonfires cause big problems as the smoke does not blow away).

So did I but I was not convinced by the theory.

We have just installed a treatment plant called a vortex and it discharges to a ditch that is dry for a couple of months a year. I didn’t think septic were allowed for new builds any more( but may be wrong) . Because the ditch dry,s for a while during the summer the pipe to the ditch is called a rumble drain, a pipe with holes In it and set on drainage stone. We are very pleased with ours.

I must admit using my electric concrete mixer is soooo much better than my old petrol one that used to take ages to get going ?
-
Sounds lovely to me to have spring water, my father in law who owned this property before we re built relied on rainwater and ground water from a well, found to have copper and iron in it but he lived to the ripe old age of 94 with no major health problems ( apart from the heart attack which saw him off).

Thanks Peter, but guess what, it’s going!!?, just kept pulling and through a cloud of smoke ( oil build up I guess) it’s running. This will teach me to drain and run carbs dry before the winter. I have also read that you can buy petrol with no ethanol in it ( aparrently it’s the ethanol that produces the crud) for garden tools. Also I read on a classic vehicle forum that ethanol is bad for older engines!!

After storing my “outdoor” machines for a couple of years I found that I forgot to drain petrol from the carbs and now have problems. With my strimmer I ended up buying a new carburettor after stripping the old one ten times to no avail. My Stihl chainsaw is only a couple of years old and done very little work but even after stripping the carb umpteen times it still refuses to produce fuel!!!!!!. Can anyone recommend “ stuff” that I can soak it in as I presume the fuel has dried out in the very small holes within it. I don’t want to have to buy a new carb for that as well.

You could extend the lower ground screws with a timber frame, diagonally braced, simples. In fact I would diagonally brace the two sides as well so there would be no “ racking”.

Laying engineered structural floor on joists
joe90 replied to ProDave's topic in Wood & Laminate Flooring
I too HATE creaky floors, our first floor was bonded with D4 glue ONLY, it has never squeeked once and I am very pleased with it. -
Well guys I am positive, thanks newhome, , but I know that shit happens, hence it’s a punt. I will let you all know in good time ( when I get through my urgent to do list).( which is quite long) ?

When I built some stairs years ago I used oak faced ply for the risers, might this be better than ash?

Well done, looks fab. I really enjoy woodwork and can’t wait to get some done myself ( making furniture, kitchen etc) but have to get the boring building work out the way first.

The difference with mine was I bought it privately so no warranty but it was still on the original pallet and shrink wrapped from the factory so I thought it was worth the punt, I will let you know when I find out ?.

Well done Dave ( I just have to try mine now?).

GSHP vs ASHP magic spreadsheet?
joe90 replied to CADjockey's topic in Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
Snow insulates, as long as the air can get to the fan it’s not a problem. I am building a louvred cover for mine as it faces SW and we are exposed and near the Atlantic. p.s. No such thing as a stupid question, stupid is not asking! -
Ordering timescales post foundation dig.
joe90 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I did not get a warranty for our build, I found out that without one if you have to sell then you can take out an indemnity insurance for less than the warranty cost. p.s. We didn’t need a mortgage. -
GSHP vs ASHP magic spreadsheet?
joe90 replied to CADjockey's topic in Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
I thought lower temps and high RH led to more defrosting cycles for an ASHP? -
GSHP vs ASHP magic spreadsheet?
joe90 replied to CADjockey's topic in Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
Thats good to hear as ours is 4Kw and is a bit of a punt regarding being adequate ?( it was cheap on Ebay). -
GSHP vs ASHP magic spreadsheet?
joe90 replied to CADjockey's topic in Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
That’s pretty good, I notice you are in the S.E. , not next to the Atlantic like me so your RH should be lower to help with the COP.. -
I too made that mistake with the si model, mine is not yet installed so can sell it with 11 1/2 month warranty. Just found an lp111 on Ebay so ordering that one.

I have just installed a vortex because it can be turned down to match the occupancy, we are in very wet ground and concrete up to within 400mm of ground level, no ground ancour needed as ridges around it are held by the concrete. I have not heard of a plant for intermittent use.

Jack, I missed your joke, thought you were serious, I forget you guys remember our planning farce. I also found that being 1 1/2atories compramises internal space upstairs and 2 stories are much easier to detail for airtightness ( plus the fact it’s what I bloody wanted ,,,,,,)
