It’s all about how the machine is set up. The same goes for woodworking, accurate set up (adjusting fences etc) makes a massive difference to performance. IMO.?

Ha, just had this problem this weekend, bought a fireclay 1 and 1/2 bowl sink and presumed both wastes were 90mm! , when it arrived one was 90mm (main) but 1/2 bowl was 60mm so had to find one of those on Ebay, anyone want a 90mm waste with basket drainer? The dimension is the whole in the sink.

I am very lucky, I used to fit Howdens kitchens and they used to give me a screw box as a freebie fir every kitchen, I started my build with about 6 full tins, 1000s screws, not had to buy one screw yet ? I agree with the above . These seem expensive but in the price of a build it’s nothing and there nothing better than having all your screws in one place and plenty of selection, if you use all of one size you can buy a box and top it up. Our planning permission was for a cottage on the site of a derelict timber and asbestos bungalow of about the same footprint, Torridge district council are renowned for being awkward and we were told by many if we were 1 mile away over the Cornwall border we would have had no problem. Torridge have a preference for bungalows or room in roof, they argued many things like access using an existing entrance put in in 2011 with full permissions etc etc, anyway we won in the end. The field we own next to our property is agricultural and we have been told there is NO way any permissions will be granted for building in this field. We plan to turn the field into a meadow, keep various ducks, geese and maybe sheep and put the Shepard’s hut there at times. Previously my wife (who owned the property for decades) was told she could not have a 1.5m x 1m chicken house as it needed planning!!! I am very aware of rights regarding planning hence the reason I aurgued our case and won ?.

Drawcad, thanks for the offer, we have had years of planning fights with our local council and although we won hands down (went to Secretary of State to appeal) I know they will fight anything I do as their nose is out of joint ?. I agree, here on the north Devon coast we almost always have a breeze, if not , very windy, and the odd day we have no breeze the difference is massive. On still days it’s good to be working indoors.

I have not used PHPP at all, I just applied it’s principles (good orientation, high levels of insulation and airtightness) to a design that we love. We are yet to see what our energy consumption is but it will be way lower than one built to current building regs. Already people have commented on how warm the house felt (in winter before any heating was switched on) and how cool (during this exceptional hot weather). We have a wood burner for winter days and MVHR for good air even in winter. What’s not to like ?

I agree, I have been told by many that when my conservatory is built (on the South side) I will get massive overheating problems but we are having solar glass in the roof to try to stop it. It’s a little like my heating strategy, no heating upstairs save bathroom towel radiators, yes I might need electric heaters in the bedroom for a few weeks of the year but so what, I am not having a heating system in rooms that are ok for say 40 weeks a year! Likewise I am not having a cooling system (other than reverse engineering my ASHP UFH which already exists) for a few hot weeks a year. people jet off to the sun for a holiday for these temps.

Not sure you can access ebuild forum anymore, so, a Tony tray is an airtight membrane that extends from the internal airtight layer below the joist, round the outside of the joist ends and back in to join up with the membrane above the floor. Tony used it in a brick and block build but the principle is the same with timber frame. It stops the joist penetrating the airtight membrane which is difficult and numerous to seal up.

I also agree about using GRP , I have used it often and it’s great. You can get a grey top coat type paint that makes it look like lead. I would extend the GRP over the top of the external wall, you can finish it with made up sections so no change of ragged edges. Look at u tube, loads of vids about how to do it. One word of warning, make sure everything is dry, if damp or wet it will go bad on you.

I had wasps going into a small hole in a wall, presumed a nest was being made in the cavity, I sealed the hole with silicone, stopped them going in or out (plus the ones stuck in the silicone). Seemed to work. I really like Jeremy,s device, I also would rather make something rather than buy it (to my wife’s annoyance sometimes ?).

We installed a 300litre Telford cylinder (care of Nick?) and I have to say we can feel almost no heat escaping from it even in this hot weather, no way of measuring the losses but the other half said it was no good as an airing cupboard as it was the same temp as the house !
