  1. So do a lot of tumble driers 🤷‍♂️
  2. Is it worth the cost for the few days/weeks it’s required?, I have no heating upstairs but for the odd week or so in winter extra heating is required the plan is just plug in heaters. Why not consider portable air con units you can pull out of storage when required?
  3. Crap!!! The flat roof is too high (which is why the ridge tiles are higher), I have seen the flat roof be extended over the front roof and ridge tiles not used (looks rubbish IMO). The ridge has been raised so Technically it needs planning permission (but doubt the council will notice 🤷‍♂️).
  4. I didn’t use an architect but had a great builder who understood Passive house principles, I was very involved in the build being on site most of the time. I would say the relationship with whoever (architect or builder) is important.
  5. Good morning Gary and welcome, yes we need to know what your capable of but saying that there are lots of things you can do with a little guidance from the collective here, remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question, stupid is not asking and we have all been there in the past. Insulation and airtightness is the key.
  6. Never heard of that one before 🤔 Appears? Only allowed 6 ft so which is it?
  7. @zoot, is it a sliding mitre saw? If so the easiest way to cut that out is to cut loads of cuts a few millimetres apart then knock them out and tidy up with a chisel, slots like this.
  8. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-62623751
  9. I would have included it and run it over the lead to catch condensation etc.
  10. Just had an Email from octopus advising of impending price cap rise, their usual bill for fuel per year is £1.5b but this year is more like £9b. They have never made a profit and won’t again this year!!! Worrying times, I am on a flexible rate 🤯
  11. My mitre saw has a depth stop so you can cut depth accurately, does yours not?. I recently built this for my nephew, trenching fir the cutouts , what mitre saw do you have?
  12. Then try araldite or similar (then bin it, but like you I don’t like to be beaten 😎)
  13. Similar to slow cookers and even less fuel used, just top it up every couple of days (I am not fussy what I eat).
  14. I have a small (4KW) ASHP that heats my DHW tank (and UFH when it’s needed fir just a couple of months). Works very well, cop of about 4, no mains gas available (so no gas standing order). Yes heat loss is down to insulation but that loss is into the house anyway! So not always a “loss“.
  15. I have just pre ordered Jamie Oliver’s one pan cooking book 👍 less washing up and less energy cooking 🤷‍♂️
  16. Difficult on a roof, my garage is about 25’ which is not ideal, especially in winter. I once considered a ground array and one that I could change the angle a few times a year but shading/cost etc stopped that idea.
  17. That was 2012, obviously it did not take off 🤷‍♂️
  18. But for what time of year?, I would go max 4kw to cover winter, I would rather give away the excess in summer than be short in winter!
  19. Not if you put a timer on it! With UFH and a large DHW tank you should have enough of a buffer to get you over the “off” period. Like @ProDave I plan to have my ASHP timer set to 11am 4pm when I get round to installing PV. I guess it will take a little while to tinker with it to get optimum usage and you can always have an override switch or another room stat set to a lower temp to override the timer. Many ways to skin a cat 🤔
  20. My favourite from the last series was this one , especially in these times of rising energy costs https://www.granddesignsmagazine.com/grand-designs-houses/self-heating-house/
  21. I agree with what’s been said above, however at that age it probably could do with a re felt and batten (the felt usually fails before the tiles and so does the nails and battens), so not a new roof but a recondition (I have done loads of these). Whilst the scaffolding is up worth getting the flat roofs re done properly. As said above get into the loft and inspect the roofing timbers if you can. Saying all that my brother was bothered about his roof some 20 years ago and he asked me to take a look, up in the loft you could see various spots of daylight shining through so I asked him if it leaked? and he said no. I said “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it “ and its still not leaking to this day 🤣
  22. I like the wall idea, on the side with no view! Will also act as a wind break which may be needed at that height, you may be hit with planning restrictions regarding overlooking neighbours 🤔
  23. This may be your stumbling block plus you will need to create a flat floor over those raised “seams” and adequate railings to prevent falling off.
  24. Another reason for using old wood (poles) as by now they will not warp anymore, plus poles are made of very straight grained wood and rarely twist or warp.
