  1. I could not agree more, so often we see people on this forum posting about poor quality workmanship and how to deal with it... (we also get some great positive stories as well ) It must be such a stress to have to confront these dodgy builders if your not used to / or don’t like confrontation......
  2. It’s a terrible job. If possible try and find an off cut and see what thickness it is, it look thin.... I hope you can get it resolved without to much trouble..... make sure you have photos of what it should look like, scour some internet images and get them printed off so that you can clearly show what a professional job should have looked like. Also include some diagrams if possible.

  4. ‘yes I would try to avoid using any lead as it’s gets very expensive very quickly, I like the idea of either doing it well or spending as little as possible and not worry what it looks like as long as it’s waterproof. If flashband or another product will stick to the roof and glass then possibly strip the lead off, clean it all up and do a good temporary fix with some flash band or equivalent.
  5. How much money do you want to chuck at it..... by the time you strip out the lead and find a bunch of rotten wood to strip out..... and then realise that as it’s just a double glazed unit bodged in from the start your going to have to Heath Robinson the thing again as you can’t actually buy a flashing kit for it........ how about a nice new Velux with a propper flashing kit and you end up with a window that will open when you want and will last a very long time. Go crazy and redo that lovely .... fake tile tin while your at it and put in a few extra windows........ just an option to consider........l
  6. Haha.... yes I watched a few bits and ended up putting my hands in front of my face and peeking out ....... not sure if it was because of the disasters or because it reminded me of all my own previous mistakes.......
  7. Been watching various bits trying to find out about the timber lean to extension but failed...... so many videos. I am in the process of buying a container to put out the back of my glorified shed and want to create a roofed area between the shed And container for our volunteers to hang out in and make an outdoor work lunch / eating area. Will troll through a few more of there videos on the hope of finding it.
  8. I would buy two Smaller vans and park them parallel but with a decent gap between each and build a roof over the top, put Your washing machine, dryer and various other bulky things under the roof as well as all boots and work gear and keep the space in the vans for living. Sleeping in one with a space for the kids to cause havoc and the other one for cooking and general living. I have lived in various huts and caravans in my life I now really like the idea of keeping cooking and sleeping separate ! Also I have kids and like that they have there own space to play that does not overflow into my cooking / relax space..... but that may be just me.
  9. Good stuff, as always starting from scratch looks so much easier, quicker, cheeper, etc etc ....... I see the supervisor is a chicken so none of the usual monkeys on site. ‘what part of the world are you in ? I am trying desperately to get back to my cottage renovations so that I can get it rented out........ but family, life and everything unexpected are hindering my good intentions....... keep the photos coming!
  10. Or you could be really lucky like me and get near perfect spring water gushing out of the ground at 10000 litres every 24hrs and amazingly up on top of a hill so gravity fed ! my set up is very simple and could have been made even more compact if I wanted.
  11. It’s a really tricky situation because the fact that the insulation has fallen down indicates that ALL the insulation is loosely fitted. air will happily bypass ALL the insulation if there is a few mm gaps that you miss, so it’s not a solution to just poke the fallen ones back. One solution is to get serious and strip all the plasterboard out and then deal with the insulation by foaming it all in and consider adding extra or as @scottishjohn says getting it topped up with spray foam and then a VCL and then re plasterboard. Sounds like a lot of work but I think you will be forever chasing your tail if you don’t hit this problem with a big stick.
  12. Tumble dryer straight to the outside..... it gets used so very much and costs me an absolute bloody fortune but due to poor / no insulation in the house and minimal heating it would be foolish to try and dry it indoors as it would encourage mould. If the weather is even half decent I insist people use the line outside ..... but if I’m not around.........
  13. Great stuff, one day I will be following your example.
  14. https://www.cladco.co.uk/ lots of people I know use this company without fault.
  15. Depends on how many windows you have.... my mansion only has two windows..... so I got hardwood sash windows unpainted and then did a very careful job painting them with primer.... undercoat, 3 layers of top coat. ..... Been done 7 years and still looking great.
  16. When one of my local BM we’re clearing up they gave me 4 sheets of 50mm PIR insulation, it had been out in the open for a few years and the foil was damaged so they wanted rid of it. I took it home and left it in the shed for 6 months to see if it misshaped or anything dramatic but it stayed the same, i only have a small bit left (5 years old in shed...) but just checked the edge and it’s still bang on 50mm and still super straight / no bending like what i get with off cuts of calotex. If you someone can identify it it from what is left of the manufacturer label it might be worth finding out a bit more about it.
  17. I have mostly been dealing with Calotex and have seen some batches shrink while others have been fine.....
  18. I have just been out To the shed and checked a whole bunch of PIR from 2-8+ years of age. My conclusion is that shrinkage is mostly batch specific as a lot of my old PIR (4-8 years) is still within the mm of the right size yet a whole bunch of 50mm I got 3 years ago has shrunk to 45mm at the edges !!!! Boo hoo said piggy. I would personally get it sent back if it’s going to cause you grief in fitting but if not assume it’s now stable and hopefully finished it’s significant shrink !!!!
  19. I have been using the Pioneer 400 for 8 years, it been used more than just to look pretty as it’s my main heat source..... it’s the best stove I have ever used as it’s very very economical, I can build a fire in the morning with wood, top up with anthracite and that’s it for the WHOLE day. Come the next morning it will still be warm. Unbelievable. I have installed two others for family and friends. Not sure if it would work with MVHR as they are not room sealed. I have the pioneer 400 not the 400p i had another £1000 wood burner that was rubbish as it drew to much air even on the lowest setting..... designed to meet modern regulations I suspect as it burns hotter and cleaner..... but of no use to me as I could NOT afford the large volume of fuel to keep warm. (I live in a rundown uninsulated farm house.....) https://www.clearviewstoves.com/stove-details/pioneer-400p
  20. not sure about the flu but a good stove will cost you £1000 + you can get cheeper but you would need to do some serious research to avoid getting a bad one.
  21. This is what happened to me and I to avoid it now.

    Hello !

G’day from the west coast of Argyll.
  23. Really nice result, very professional. Well done.
  24. Welcome, What an amazing plot, I have just under 5 acres of ground and have spent far to much time over the last 7 years turning it into part garden and wilding other areas. One day I will get back to the important stuff like rebuilding the houses..... Look forward to seeing your progress.
  25. Welcome to the forum, plenty of reading to be done on here...... rebuilding / repairing old buildings seem like the cheapest way to go .......but in fact new build is often cheaper, quicker and you get what you want. I started out rebuilding and repairing two properties on my site ...... 7 years on.......... I really should have knocked down and started again...... but hay ho. I do all the work myself and I have enjoyed the journey but it’s come at a hell of a cost, both financially and personally. Anyway best of luck, read loads on here and learn, wish this site was around before I got to far down the Rabbit Hole.
