3mm natural slate spacing, why so large?
makie replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Just because they are a specialist merchant doesn't necessarily mean they know what they are on about. What advice did they give? -

Capillary attraction. You are also looking into this too much mate, just lay them with a slight gap instead of using a nail on every one. You will be there until next Christmas. -
Just want to point out that they say only approved installers can use it but I've seen multiple people use it after buying it online. Do your research on everyone first.

Use a slate knife, anything else will not leave a good finish. Never use a stihl saw or grinder either, those are for people that can't slate. It will go through them but it leaves a very poor finish and wont look good.

OSB is overkill for that, counter-battens down the rafters would be more than enough. (the cost is definitely not little now anyway) Also sarking is small boards around 150mm wide, not OSB.

How hot could a lead valley get?
makie replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
You can do it either way really. I've had some architects want it done over the lead once it is lead on top of the NBM. I prefer over because it gives a extra layer of protection if any water gets in. Doing it under would allow water to get in near the nail-holes if any water does get in. (Unlikely if done right) -

Do not use a breathable membrane under lead, it will sweat and damage the lead. Get a non breathable membrane like a1 protect and run a strip down, install the lead and then put your regular breathable membrane on top of the lead to the desired overhang. -
That's just wood mate, it's just a fancy finial for the lead.

This, unfortunately these guys seem useless. @000jo000 It should be finished like this but with the lead on top of the zinc ridge. (couldn't find a better photo) In regards to how they nailed the slates it is also unfortunately done wrong and a high wind can damage the roof. It needs to be done similar to this, a minimum of one on the head of the slate and one on each cheek.

Marley used to have one like this, works well but as someone else said it needs the membrane

I'm a roofer and have done many turrets over the years, you are correct. This must be their first attempt at doing a turret but do not back-down on this. It needs sorted or it is a potential leak/wind problem.

Lead roll top ridge and hip per linear meter cost.
makie replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
I'm the same. I can do the majority of leadwork and have a very good knowledge of it. There is some stuff I won't do as I can't make it look as good as a proper leadworker. -

All depends on the area and what exactly is being done. I've paid anywhere between 30 and 150 a metre. Christ I've even paid 800 for a finial to be made up for me. -

A proper leadworker always charges by the metre. I'm a roofer and can do leadwork but when I get someone in for welding etc it's always by the metre -
Has my roofer put my tiles on properly?
makie replied to Azrim91's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Unfortunately not. Can drill a new fixing, hold it up with an extra batten in the right place depending on the side it's on. Small cuts can be bigger under the tile but glue and a clip help hold them on some sites. -

Not always, there are multiple types of dry valley. -

Like I said it's more of an English method for doing valleys. Most tiles don't have a tile and a half version and those that do would have extreme wait-times just now. Usually when I do a small cut it has a decent bit of the tile buried so it's not a weak point, but based on how this is done I wouldn't bet on it. -

Using cement in the valleys is common down in England, this is just a poor job. Small cuts will always happen in a valley (better to have them at the valley than the verge) -

They are clueless unfortunately. Should be new lead in the valley, There is no excuse for not marking out the batten gauge properly, They have used the wrong flashing kit at the velux (they used a slate flashing kit at the bottom) The cement work in the valley is poor. Get a roofer to inspect it and point out all the issues. -
That's an odd way of spelling Scotch....

Burton Roofing in Livingston have copper in stock usually.
-
All of it depends on the state the job is left in. It might be battened but if the "roofer" couldn't work with slates there is a good chance he has messed the gauge up.

I'm doing a big job with Rosemarys just now and it is a 3 month lead time

You can mechanically fix certain EPDM's, tends to only happen on warehouses etc. You can also do it directly on to the insulation, had an architect spec it on a job once. It's (expletive deleted)ing terrible, don't do it.

You can buy Hertalan in 20m rolls and they do them in widths perfect for gutters like this. Lead would not be done in 1.5 m bays for this, code 4 is not meant to be used on gutters of that length. You can use an expansion joint to avoid the need for steps.
