It's terrible, I could do that better and we don't use cement in valleys much in Scotland. Seems steep but would depend on where you are based, how busy the roofer is etc Get 3/4 quotes and make a decision from there.
-
Usually word of mouth or speak to some well known builders. Go to your local merchants, they will know who to use and who to avoid. Never trust these checkatrade sites or anything like that.
-
That means nothing really, you can do a 1 day course and claim to be trained
-
Use hammer fixings to attach the battens
-
It's a universal angle ridge so even if they can't find an exact match there will be something really similar. Personally I never reuse the original ridges on any dry ridge or hip system, if one breaks like this then it is hard to match. Looks much better with new ridges.
-
I'm a roofer and this work is poor, the new ridge isn't any good. It needs to be tight. The mortar should all be cleared off of the ridge and the price is all dependent on size, time and how easy the access is etc
-
Any colour in particular and is it mock-bonded? I might have some lying around. Burton are keeping their stock for regular customers now due to the shortage.

What tiles are you looking for?
-
Yes, dry hips should have trays fitted as per manufacturers instructions. They will still allow ventilation.
-
Yes. They help hold the ridges level on profiled tiles mostly but can help with flats. That and they are designed to take the water to the bottom of the hip.
-
Depends on how many workers really. It would probably be 2 days each verge.
-
They would use a roof ladder to get that ridge and slate
-
It can happen, if a slate is damaged above the gauge then it would be impossible for them to see it.
-
The one big issue here is if you do decide to have it redone then there will be glue used on your roof where they cannot get a nail in the slates. The only way to redo that properly is to strip out the panel so that a full diagonal section can be achieved so that every slate gets double nailed again.
-
These are done purely for looks, not so much as a way of keeping rain out as it would be easier to simply put a lead valley in etc. I'm pricing a job right now with some fishtail slates in Scotland, it's usually done just to make an architect feel proud of themselves.
-
No it was and still is a huge part of the apprenticeship for plumbers. Many of them choose not to do it as they can make easier money elsewhere.
-
Del Carmens are a very nice slate and I haven't had an issue with them. Just others they have. Cupa H3's are the best when it comes to Spanish. They even do a randomized range which is good to use. Contact Burton roofing they usually have a good range of slates and are helpful.
-
Roofer that had the misfortune of using them because the customer bought them.... Brittle, severe colour variation from one pallet to another and not holed properly. Some with one hole, others with none but the marks from the punch machine. I'm a roofer and I would recommend you avoid them.
-
Do not use SSQ, their slates are awful. They buy all the slates the big quarries won't use and mix and match them. That's how you end up with a roof like that
-
Lead work was always a plumbers job, then roofers started doing it on sites so they could get the job done without waiting for a plumber. Most roofers aren't very good when it comes to lead.
-
It might just be the way the roofers were taught. Lead should be dressed around the corner and under the slate at the bottom of the watergate to allow it to sit down more.
-
Water tracking was what we were taught during my apprenticeship. Looks nicer to me tbf
-
I've only done it on a few jobs and it's usually when requested by the client or architect

Advice required please new tiles with old

This will be fine as long as they have made a secret gutter under the tiles. This can be done with either lead or GRP -
Thinking ahead for when I have a roof to slate...
