  1. From our experience your architect needs to know your budget as they have a habit of really overspecing the build. For example on our build the architect had a porte cochere joining the garage to the house, it was a really fancy feature but would have cost the earth. As many will tell you, put your money in the fabric of the building with loads of insulation, good quality windows and MVHR and you will have a good base to start with. These things you want to last for a long time yet other items like bathrooms and kitchens can be upgraded at anytime in the future if you cannot afford what you want now. Be realistic about what YOU can do in the way of labour and finishes as if your paying for everything to be done by tradesmen then costs will be a lot higher. We tweaked our design after the architect had presented us with the initial design so do not be afraid to question why he/she has designed it that way.
  2. Hi Ian I have used moisture resistant render board from Berry's at Leyland. 2.4m x 1.2m which is 12mm thick. Ask to speak to Jonathan Aspin and if you open an account you get free delivery. Be warned they are quite heavy!!

  5. Delivery over £200 is £12 and free if the order is over £300
  6. Self building is all about adapting and overcoming these issues. 3 people could easily lift the beam leaving one in the void to assist and then rotate so you all get a rest. Take a leaf out of @Nickfromwalesand @Onoffbook by laying one, have a beer and then lay a few more. You will need liquid anyway if it is going to be in June when you lay them.
  7. Two of us have just moved a piece of glass weighing 97kg upstairs so I would have thought 4 of you can move the beams quite easily.
  8. +1
  9. Just asking for a box -set surely. Binge bathroom renervation!!
  10. I have been pondering your comment on people re-do their bathroom every 15/20 years Nick. Does this mean as soon as On/Off has finished he will have to start again!!
  11. Thanks for this update. We are hoping to use this type of unit. Are you happy with the performance?
  12. Thanks for the info
  13. We went to Roccia in Preston last week and we found the staff really helpful but their prices will need to be drastically reduced to do business!! The flexible tile adhesive that you mention can it be used for large porcelain tiles direct on to primed concrete? Someone I know mentioned a new adhesive called Kerakoll Biogel, has anybody used this before
  14. SNICKERS FLOORLAYER CARPET FITTER KNEEPADS BLACK/GREY ONE SIZE 9118 I know we have discussed this before but after trying the foam kneelers and then trying these above from a carpet fitter contact you would be amazed at the difference. I have had mine now for over two years and they are showing no sign of wear and I have really given them some hammer
  15. Thought it was you stamping your foot after realising @Onoff is dismantling the bathroom
  16. Please please do not start dismantling it before you have finished it
  17. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DDETTnvRFcwc&ved=0ahUKEwiCuOCGmK3ZAhXhAsAKHX_aDSUQwqsBCCcwAA&usg=AOvVaw3jcuE92bjqlVETyCL_nEvx We have around 180 sqm of large format porcelain tiles and I intend to make it easier on the body using the above. What I will save on labour I will buy/make things to assist in the cutting, lifting and just maybe a row at a time rather than all day at it. I have a disc problem and sportsman's knees so need to make it as easy as possible.
  18. Thanks for the vote of confidence Craig
  19. Glass will be cut to size
  20. To be perfectly honest it is not structural ! I had been trying to get info about the glass fixing on the internet and all it came up with was structural glass so I sort of carried on the theme with my post but it is a piece of 8mm toughened that will be placed in the funny shaped opening. The wall it is going in is just an exterior wall which has no insulation as it is outside the thermal envelope.
  21. Has anyone any advice on fitting structural glazing? This a single piece of toughened glass that will be fitted to an external wall on our roof terrace. At the moment my idea is to leave a 5mm gap to aid fitting which will be filled with glazing silicone afterwards. Once the glass is in place there will be a 25 x 100mm batten either side to hold it in place with window tape between the glass and the wood. Then there will be render board on top of that and then rendered. Underneath the render board will be a dpc and the Sika roof deck was fitted so it passed right under the glazing just in case of water penetration. Hope the pictures help. TIA
  22. Message to the Mods really. Does this need re-naming to be the Encyclopedia of bathroom renovation with chapters etc!!
  23. Reminds of my first doer upper, had mushrooms growing in the carpet. Took my 11 year old son with me to cut the carpet up to dispose of it, he has never forgotten the experience although I do remind him of it when I visit him at Uni!!
  24. I used this to cut my moisture resistant render board for the exterior of our house and it made the job very easy
