Just interested to see what people have paid for their exterior render as some quotes seem extortionate. Our system will be a thin coat fully embedded mesh onto a render board. TIA

Just to clarify that the price of £46/m2 includes 23 metres of external gutter and associated downpipes, clips etc and fascia. 10 metres of a secret gutter with all the associated flashings. We also had to have quite a few bespoke trims to accommodate our upper and lower roof junction with the roof terrace.
-
The cost of our roof has worked out at approx £46/m2. There is no labour charge as we are doing it ourselves

Doing the battening at the moment and know what you mean. It is tempting to have character and sometimes a darn sight easier but our build is very contemporary and it needs to be straight, flat with no ripples in. We have a cantilevered overhang on three sides and the laminated veneer beams are slightly wider than they should have been and this has created an issue which instead of just fixing the battens in place has meant I have had to break each batten at the junction of the frame and laminated beam, plane and pack the remaining piece of batten to ensure that from the outside the wall will be flat. I suppose we all have issues with the build that we have to overcome and this is the first and possibly not the last we will have! Watch this space.

looks great, you should be really proud. Be with you after a few more hundred metres of taping etc

Frame up and just getting right into all things self build!. Been doing some airtightness taping and find it very addictive!! It is true that when you are doing it for yourself you really take care and never seem to get to down at how much work is involved (me thinks). Ask me again when we have finished. Will try and get some pictures up soon but I am not to great on computers , prefer the more practical side of house building. Just as an aside what part of people's build did they enjoy the most?

For those interested apparently tonight's episode on grand designs has a Sunamp system in the project

Feel for you. Had this on issue on our last new built home (local developer). Above our bedroom the loft space hardly had any insulation, it was a metre tall in the middle and 5 metres wide and trussed. Won't bore you with the details but I ended up doing it properly to ensure a uniform and full depth insulation layer.

You need to work back from the outside. Decide what render then see what board is suitable. It is a nightmare as they all differ in some aspect of fitting and if you do not follow their requirements you stand no chance if you have a problem later on
-
You need to decide on which board you are going to use and get the fitting instructions from the manufacturer as they do differ quite considerably. What are you putting on top of the boards?
-
Yes, our render is the finished exterior of the house so needs to be right

It's not that bad in Cumbria, ask @recoveringacademic. Windows due the end of November but we all know about window problems. Thanks for the responses guys
-
I have boarded up some windows and the roof is a standing seam roof so I need the render doing first as I am not having any fascias/soffit.
-
We had a delay in releasing funds for our frame which meant that instead of it being erected in April it has only now just been erected. The dilemma we now face is the that the plasterer's are uncertain whether they can get the exterior completed before the bad weather arrives and the delay in the windows ,end of November ,means we face the prospect of having to wait until next year to finish the exterior. The frame is watertight at the moment and I am waiting for the timber frame manufacturer to get back to me as to what I can expect from leaving it throughout the winter but has anybody got any pearls of wisdom that they think we could do to keep it watertight for possibly six months. I am thinking of fly battening the outside to ensure the wind does not get under the roofing membrane and frame breather membrane, even wrapping it in some heavy duty plastic? The frame itself is fully insulated with airtightness membrane so I am keen not to get water/moisture into the structure. TIA

If anyone interested I have a 15% off code for airtightness tapes with Passive house systems. The code is 15%aocx, not sure how long this code lasts but I have only just ordered and it worked for me. I have the rep's contact details so if it does not work let me know and I will contact him.

I will be using a Parex render on moisture resistant backer board (weight 27kg per 8x4 sheet). I have conflicting advice telling me that 25 x 50mm battens will be suitable using stainless steel screws 6.0 x 90mm spaced every 500 mm from timber frame supplier. Parex say 25 x 50mm battens are a minimum and would prefer 38 x 63mm battens using 5.0 x 75mm s/'s screws spaced every 150mm. This would give a fixing of 25mm into the actual timber frame after a 38mm batten and 10mm panel vent board. So the thinner batten has a larger screw with wider spacings and thicker batten shorter screws with less spacing between screws. What have other people used for their battening? Parex say the larger batten is kiln dried and more stable but trying to keep it dry before render is applied will not be easy. TIA

Thanks for the responses guys. It turns out the videos have just disappeared and where not deleted. My wife is running some software to try and locate the files but apparently this is a pretty common occurence with windows 10, much to our dismay.

Steel (Acro) Props - Needle or Strong Boy?
Pete replied to LeanTwo's topic in General Construction Issues
+1 to needles unless you do not want to disturb the wall above. -
I am trying to remove as many obstacles so that when the power floating is done it is not trying to avoid pipes sticking out of the slab and thus will not be able to get to all areas. If I cut them off flush with the proposed ffl I need to be able to seal them off for the pour and then would like to be able to adjust the height for any future couplings. I think it is either a case of terminating the pipe in a coupling and fitting a pipe closer that I can remove or boxing round the pipe to enable power float to pass over and give me the ability to adjust the coupling height once I start to do the interior soil stack.
-
Pouring slab soon and how have people terminated their soil pipes pre pour? Trying to make power floating easier so do not want loads of pipes sticking up but also may want to make connection for toilets etc at low level. Have people just put on a coupling with temporary socket on the end of the pipe or something more elaborate? TIA
