Should I make building control and for what application?
Roger440 replied to legepe's topic in Building Regulations
That would be a complete waste of time! Doesn't work. Cant work. But, your thoughts behind it are valid. If it has no DPC, installing a concrete floor with a dpm, "may" depending on moisture levels, give you a damp problem in the walls as instead of evaporating in the floor void, it will creep up the walls. How old is the house? -
Should I make building control and for what application?
Roger440 replied to legepe's topic in Building Regulations
Just an "extensive" repair! But ts still a repair if it goes back the same. Otherwise, where does it stop? If you had one rotton joist to do, still notifiable? -
Ive used it, but used the heavy duty stuff. Looked at the regular stuff at a nieghbours and decided it was to feeble to be useful.

Everything Barney said I have the same.

If you just "repair" the floor to back to how it used to be, will anyone know? Much as it might be notifiable, if what goes back in is the same as original who can know? Thats just "maintenance in my world. But, dont forget, EPC E from this May, and C from 2025 for a rental. So doing the above may just stitch yourself up. If you go BCO, get a private one. More likely to be useful. There are 2 ways to interpret rules. 1) the "council" way, ie find a way to trip you up, stop you doing it etc. 2) Pragmatic solution that complies and gets the job done. -
Are there any "rules" to comply with if installing one. Or can anyone just stick it in there? After Nick has removed my tennants gas fire, they want to put something in the "hole". Personally the optimist seems a better idea...............................

Brickwork damp patch after prolonged heavy rain
Roger440 replied to readiescards's topic in General Construction Issues
Nothing to add abut the bricks - but great garage!!!!!! -
Indeed. From a self build perspective, the inevitable outcome of a tightening of enforcement can only make using "unusual" methods of construction even more difficult, or likely impossible. Which many on this forum are doing. Building control, in whatever form it exists will simply become more risk averse. Why put your name to something unusual, when you dont need to.

Last year i did 3000 miles round europe, so im sure scotland will be fine

Well, ive got 8 days up there. Wont be doing the NC500 as such, as the east side isn't that great, and ive been to JOG more times than i care to remember. Only so many breakfasts you can have at the Seaview Hotel (in case you wondering why, and for those interested : http://ctrbrr.blogspot.co.uk/p/the-route.html ) So im concentrating on the west coast. Got breakdown cover, but spanners too! At the moment im with the Stag idea, its just the flog there and back thats not so good Any words of wisdom on places to stay or visit always welcome

WORSE than St Austell??? Can you say where? Ive done plenty of the middle bits. But reminds me of an experience that re-enforces your point. And i remember this because i was in the same shop in Liskeard last week. Few years ago on holiday, went to buy some magazines for my phone and internet free week off. Bought a few as i recall, about £18 ish. The girl behind the counter was in shock. She just stared at me after taking the £20 from me, then said. Nearly £20 on magazines. She said it again. She genuinely was amazed. That was certainly an eye opener that i wont forget. Sorry if i sound like an American when i say ive "done" cornwall As for the car trip, its either the Maloo, which is by far the better handling car, but modern and WAY to fast at 600bhp, or the Stag, which even when thrashed to within an inch of its life, isn't really going that fast at all.

As it happens............................ Im currently planning a driving holiday in the west of scotland in May. Ive got 9 days, so i may take a detour via that area. Just cant make up my mind what car to take! 1st world problems and all that.

Small world!!! Not really a bar type person, so not really an issue. No pub here either. Closed in the sixties. Just cant get over how cheap it is!!! Wife says NO.

I think i would be getting out the squirty foam pronto!!!

Horror is a bit harsh, though i have been to St Austell!!! We should have bought this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-34896699.html Stayed here on holiday 4 times. And only a few miles from Falmouth, but might as well be on a different planet. Went for £421K in the end. A semi serious conversation was had about this one. Would be a dramatic life change, and you can never go back
-
Look at this! This would be 5-600K here. Even in that state. All those lovely outbuildings............................... http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-54743672.html Interesting about going to Belfast instead!

Had a peruse on rightmove as you do. Pretty good value up there, considering its not that far north. Nor too far from civilisation.

As above, are they solid walls? If so, you might want to consider, a, why they are damp, b, using lime plaster.

But which one is which? -
Much as i love a warm workshop (and indeed built one prior to moving, doh!) may concentrating on the house is best? Unless you can live the garage? Something my wife suggested, whem a crude calculation suggested it was 5 times more thermally efficent than the house!

I cant say ive used in a domestic setting, but yes, if you drop something on it, it will chip. Which will be difficult to repair.
