  1. Because they sound silly with a German accent.
  2. Could you have not drilled them out?
  3. Air filtration is not always about the pore size. High performance car filters have a very course mesh. This slows the airspeed (actually an acceleration in the negative direction), allowing fine particles to drop out of suspension. Very high performance air craft filters do the same but enhance it with centrifugal forces.
  4. Bodging BiL is one, though he trained in cabinetry.
  5. Not sure if I should be tendering a lady's garden at my age.
  6. A car radiator fan maybe.
  7. I think Freon us the blowing gas. Propane, pentane, methylene chloride, and the chlorofluorocarbons are the usual blowing agents.
  8. That's okay, no one is going to know, because, like my sister, you are always cross about something.
  9. Adult social care, and pretty good it is to us at the moment.
  10. Could run it through Jeremy's spreadsheet. Though that would give a different result from a PHPP analysis.
  11. Have you done the same with your current place. Be interesting as the climate is quite different, even if the headline mean figures are similar.
  12. So the BREXIT mentality machine is still running. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rishi-sunak-brexit-solar-panels-b2044304.html But we have 5p off fossil fuels at the pumps, and most of us are getting £150 off council tax to help pay our bills. I am starting to think that this government is not very good at finance.
  13. Yes, do the sums. I did once and it was not worth pursuing.
  14. After I vanished my floor, I spend half an hour sliding up and down it. Reminded me of being 6, I was 46.
  15. Have you run some scenarios on PVGIS?
  16. What about sunpipes. I would thinking making one that replaces ridge tiles would be fairly easy.
  17. @OnOff lives in the 'Garden of England'. If he fails to grow beans, then no amount of ash is going to help.
  18. We were fitting them 35 years ago in the UK market. Customers loved them.
  19. A quick look at the dimensions, not going to have a very large radiator in in, and it sees a bit light. I take it is is not an inverter driven model. Kind of thing that would suit me as well, so I am going to recommend you get one, then report back.
  20. Yes she was. 93 this coming Wednesday. May Aunt, who was blind, fell between the bed and the wall. In trying to get herself up, she pulled on the bedside table, toppling it over and wedging that between herself and the wall as well. My parents were due to visit the next day, but as they were passing, they decided to call in. Probably bought her a few more years life. My boss has an old Father and for some reason had a feeling that at 10 PM, should just pop around. His Father had collapsed on the kitchen floor. Not a problem, son has a key. Except, his Father had left keys in the door locks, so that was useless. Could not find anything to safely break a window with, so called the emergency services. They forced a window and got in. So doors that can ALWAYS be opened from outside is worth considering.
  21. Roof integrated PV can't, and it costs no more than some roof tiling.
  22. Tarmac is the worlds largest recycled product, followed by concrete. Cement is not that bad in reality.
  23. Just 'learning on the job' with my Mother. It is really difficult to know what to do, a walk in shower, with a level floor (wet room) is necessary, them may sure it is large enough for a seat, controls are reachable from that seat. Lavatories need to be higher, and if doorways can be wider, or at least a 'straight line' into and out of them, that helps. Remote control light switches, but make sure you can override them manually and you have plenty of pre-programed controllers. An oven with a drop down door, an induction hob (as it is not very hot) after use, taps that are easy to use, without looking like industrial ones. And a very good chair. One thing I have found is that old ladies can be quite determined and are happy to get on with it, it an amazing manner. Considering my Mother was sent home from hospital 'to dies within a week to 10 days' after a couple of strokes and a hip replacement, 5 months on, she is trotting about and starting to look after herself again. Just this morning, as I took her a mug of tea, she said that she had to get up during the night to wee. I said that is a victory, not a hindrance. She agreed.
  24. Yes, that is an idea. I am assuming that @Delbot wants to go low embodied carbon and energy, and recycle. Our old mate Ed Davies dug some holes, filled them with stone, then a small cast concrete cap, if I remember right. It will be here somewhere: https://edavies.me.uk/blog/tag/perihelion/index1.html
  25. I used so old roof slates to line the sides of my timber retaining wall, then just filled with dirt and planted away. Two years in it is still fine. Traditionally old railway sleepers were used, but the anti-rot treatment was the problem.
