ProDave
So it won't be long before the joiner comes to hang my doors. I need to first source all the ironmongery. Lets start with hinges. I have 11 doors to hang so need 33 hinges. They are good (expensive) doors so demand good ironmongery. The Joiner suggested fire door hinges, but not the expense of ball bearing hinges. He suggested "washer" hinges, ones that have a washer between the adjoining surfaces (in place of the ball race on the ultra posh ones) He suggested I should be paying about £1 per hinge. This is the best I have come up with so far https://www.toolstation.com/grade-7-spun-pin-fire-door-hinge/p33522 Yes they don't have washers, and are £1.50 per hinge. I can't find anything between these and ball bearing hinges. Though these are "fire door hinges" Any ideas where I might find these elusive "washer" hinges? Door catches and handles is pretty straightforward. The other think I have not yet found is the bolts for the top and bottom of a double door set. No doubt I have not found them because like most things I don't know the correct name. These go at the top and the bottom of the first door in each pair to be closed and shoot a bolt up into the top of the frame and down into the floor. The mechanism is cut into the top and bottom of the edge of the door and sits flush. Any idea what they are called please?
Declan52
They are called flush bolts. https://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/browse/bolts-stops-and-accessories/flush-bolts?fi=c How are you working the join in the double doors. I have a metal decorative trim instead of routing out both doors. Much easier to do.
Cpd
Have you looked at ironmongery direct ? I got my hinges from them, have not hung the doors yet but the hinges look good. I made sure to buy hinges that were over rated for the doors they were going to be used on so as to be sure they would be robust.
Declan52
These are the hinges I used. https://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/product/twin-ball-bearing-hinge-102x76x3mm-304-satin-stainless-steel-pair-321864 Not much more than your pick dave but a better hinge in terms of its weight capacity. ProDave
Thanks for the replies Looks like Screweys are cheaper (now I know what I am looking for) https://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke-flush-bolt-polished-chrome-150mm/3169j#_=p And cheaper ball bearing hinges. https://www.screwfix.com/p/eclipse-fire-door-ball-bearing-hinges-satin-chrome-102-x-76mm-2-pack/5532j They come in a bit cheaper at Electricfix prices. By buying hinges in packs of 2, not 3, means I get the quantity discount break, that I would not reach if I bought packs of 3. Next silly question question. If I buy those hinges what size screw? Normally I would just buy the hinge and look through all my boxes of screws when they arrive and select what fits. but all my boxes of screws are brass colour. I need to buy some satin chrome screws to match, and they don't tell you what bloody size screw they need? EDIT: scrub that silly question, they come with screws. joe90
I used Screwfix fire door ball race hinges (with screws) and glad I did. The weight of the door even on washers cannot be as good as on a ball race .
Oz07
I think the opposite. These cheap made ball bearing hinges are only made for so many cycles. I've gone round blocks of flats changing the lot. Surely for a residential house we could source a decent robust washered hinge
Jeremy Harris
I used three of these stainless steel ball bearing hinges per door: https://www.doordeals.co.uk/products/ironmongery-and-more/door-furniture/hinges/3-quot;-ball-bearing-hinges.aspx Been in use for over 4 years now without any problems at all. Very smooth, even with our heavy doors.

Neil
I ordered the grade 13 stainless hinges mentioned above, door handle sets and flush bolts from Ironmongery Direct. All appear to be good quality. I had previously signed up with Ironmongery Direct for their Newsletter and a few days later they sent me a voucher for a discount of 30% off my first order which saved me a couple of hundred pounds. Also worth checking with joiner, if he is routing out the hinge rebates, that he has the right size jig as some hinges are 4" and others are 102mm. This can lead to a poor fitting if the wrong jig is used.
Construction Channel
I'm a bit late to the party but £1/hinge is just not going to happen on anything worth buying. Bearings are obviously they way forwards unless it's on a shed. Only issue I have found with cheap bb hinges is the grease tends to leak out of them after a few months. But saying that once the grease is wiped away I'm pretty bloody sure they will still work better than a washer hinge for at least a couple of decades. ProDave
Joiner is old school, he will be using a chisel. I have ordered the screwfix ones. Some strange pricing, they are cheaper per hinge as a pack of 3 than a pack of 2, but if I bought as packs of 3 I would not have enough packs to get to the price break. So order more packs of 2, they start off more per hinge, but I reach the price break ending up less per hinge.
Rob99
Does anybody use hinges with removable pins? We have them on our existing doors and found them hugely useful for quickly taking the door off when decorating or moving large furniture items through the house. Am renewing the doors and will need new hinges so wondered if there was a decent quality one with pin.
ProDave
I imagine removable pins only really work on plain hinges. Imagine trying to line up all the ball races to insert the pin?
Mr Punter
We have lift off hinges that came with the doorsets. https://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/product/royde-and-tucker-h101-hi-load-lift-off-hinge-100x88x3mm-right-hand-zinc-plated-pair-990168 I guess the doorset people get a good deal. With a trade discount that comes down to about £7 to £10 a hinge.
