  1. That's really lovely lizzie Mine will be a little more rustic, whether I like it or not Another question I've decided how I will be affixing the larch barge board, question is how close do I put it to the bottom of the slates? They currently overhand a few inches, I intend to but the larch right up to them, subject to someone telling me what I should put in between barge board and the slates or that I should leave a small gap?
  2. do you have any pics @Triassic do you have no metal flashing above the windows to provide a drip etc?
  3. So some stupid timber cladding questions, before I start planning how I'm going to attack this - my focus has been entirely elsewhere for months. I have circa 50m2 of Vertical Board on Board Cladding to do. Roof is on, slated etc. Temporary fascias in place to give kick for slate etc, but does need replaced. No barge boards and/or soffits in place yet- plan is to minimise the barge board/fascia/box end to the absolute minimum Plan for cladding is vertical, and horizontal cross battening out, before board on board cladding is installed. so, stupid questions in order. 1. Do I need to figure out and install fascia soffit, barge board, box bloody end etc first, and install. Then clad up to it or, clad first and install fascia/soffit over the top. 2. What can i use for a flashing/drip detail at top of window. This doesn't seem to be on the plans architect supplied, so I've missed it out. I've been looking around and timber cladding builds and some dont appear to have anything above window, other than timber detailing? 3. does anyone have any decent links to videos of timber cladding detailing/installation - I've not really found anything that goes into detail about cladding round doors and windows.
  4. looks really great have you had previous experience laying this type of driveway, or did you learn on the job?
  5. so for me the difference was enough to get me a 'free' planer thicknesser as in I'll keep it. Below is an example of siberian larch for 450 linear metres, top one is planed cost (note the difference in thickness) Board on Board 21*146 b grade 3.864 1738.8 32x150 Siberian Larch Sawn 3.144 1414.8 I actually ended up buying 900 lm, (and got a discount for bulk order), so that I use the same material for cladding and decking, smooth siberian larch
  6. Hi Oz07, I'm not sure what you are saying The majority of the work will be the using the thicknessing function for all the front faces
  7. I've gone with it = 900lm of 32x150 Siberian larch on route to make up some board on board cladding and decking metabo hc260c planer/thicknesser enroute too.
  8. bought mine from vida xl https://www.manomano.co.uk/filter/stone-fence-2508?brand_names=VIDAXL free delivery, which for me up north, is amazing
  9. Induction topped Range for me in m new Kitchen, wouldn't change it for anything, Had previously been eye level double oven with separate hob.
  10. I have a similar layout living/dining/kitchen and really I cant say I've been bothered by noise etc. I picked a low noise dishwasher, and extractor, and bobs your uncle. I tend to put the dishwasher on before I go to bed, so I cant say it would be a problem anyway
  11. @Midona looks like a good spot, you are lucky
  12. @ProDave yes terrible sailor, born and brought up in Stornoway, played for school footy team which meant weekly trips to the mainland, and still was sick every time, was like unintended bulimia, however that's all past now and I get to laugh at my kids suffering the same
  13. A beautiful part of the world Ullapool, though I hated it for the first 20 years of my life as whenever I was there I had just been seasick or just about to be seasick, how close to the town is your plot?
  14. Yeah just the look that the wife will accept,
  15. Sounds like your giving a thumbs up ?
  16. Seperating the cladding from the decking its 500 lm or 125 planks or so Its apparently regularised though obviously thats only known for sure once it arrives 4 passes per plank, I'm assuming 1 on each side? Board on board I'm guessing would only need the face side of one layer, and face and sides of top layer boards to be planed... or does it all have to be planed to ensure regularity? Are we talking days or weeks to get this all done, with help to lug, position and stack planks Adding the decking into the equation it would mean not only a cost saving but the decking quality would go up from English larch to siberian I have to be realistic though
  17. Yeah it's a bit about having the machine at the end of it too ? Is 500 m worth that much effort, 100 odd boards. Are we talking a day or two? I genuinely don't know as I've nevered used a thicknesser
  18. Hi there, I'm looking at board on board Siberian larch cladding for my house, I need approximately 500linear metres I was also looking at smooth English Larch for decking as I cant afford hardwood, and dislike grooved softwood treated decking, again circa 500 linear metres. for the cladding itself I can save approximately £600 by buying Kiln dried Larch board, approx. 25 x 150 and probably the same again if I bought 32x 150 larch boards for decking £500 for a planer/thicknesser of decent enough quality so a small saving on planning my own cladding, but a bigger saving if I do decking too Is it worth the effort, are there any risks, is it too much work to plane my own wood? any advice much appreciated
  19. where about in Aberdeenshire are you building?
  20. The concretes not going to care it will be levelled regardless, the question would be how much lee-way have you in your estimated concrete order in order to take into account any dips though in your case, 4mm etc I very much doubt itll make a difference
  21. lizzie, what have you got above your window reveals? slate? metal?
  22. I hired one from local timber yard - £14 for the weekend big belle float.
  23. Morning I don't know your circumstances, or what you are willing to do but I sourced reclaimed slates myself on facebook marketplace The slating of the roof is pretty much the one part of the build I've not done, and honestly the Slaters were in their element with the slates I managed to get The quality was astounding ( originally from Peterhead prison) and it looks beautiful. I think i ended up paying 90p a slate for reclaimed welsh It did involve me hiring a van and driving up to get them loaded up, then grading them when I got them home, but its very much worth it. Cladding however is a different story, I'm struggling to find myself Silva timber and Vincent timber are pretty prominent online, Silva are pretty reasonable but Vincent Timber are looking for £400 plus delivery to send me anything. The two local timber merchants will supply me slightly cheaper overall(timber is more expensive, but delivery free) Russwood and Glenalmond Timber are two 'local' cladding suppliers but I find them extortionate.
