Hi and welcome to the forum. Retro fitting a MVHR system isn't as easy as when doing a major refurb so good luck.

Renovating and extending 1970s house with warm air heating
Gone West replied to Gooman's topic in Introduce Yourself
Sounds good. If you are going to significantly improve the insulation then the warm air heating could be at a lower temperature. We have a very well insulated house with warm air heating and find it works well. -
The water table around here can be up to road level so the BCO and Highways agreed that we could discharge roof drainage straight onto the lane so we bypassed SuDS. Saved a lot of money.

Advice on Choosing Material - AluClad / Timber / uPVC?
Gone West replied to soapstar's topic in Windows & Glazing
They are RAL7037. There are many different profiles for uPVC some insulated, some not as there are different types of engineered timber some with insulation and some not. He is wrong to make such a statement without qualifying it. -
Advice on Choosing Material - AluClad / Timber / uPVC?
Gone West replied to soapstar's topic in Windows & Glazing
@soapstar We live a couple of miles from the sea. We have Rehau Geneo fibre reinforced uPVC frames which are insulated and the thermal performance is better than timber. We had the corner welds filled before the frames were sprayed and so far everybody who has commented thinks they are aluminium. -
Looks like a kit car to me with that number plate, possibly a Gentry.

Recommendations for a Bug Zapper
Gone West replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I've twice seen spiders drop off the bottom of the entrance door when I've opened it. They get disposed of very quickly if I see them. In the summer we leave doors and windows open so plenty of time for them to come in. -
Before I bought it I telephoned them and there is an old chap there (probably younger than me), who was very helpful. Could be worth a call.

IIRC the waste pipe is quite a small diameter so using 15mm might cause problems with pressure. Could you feed the waste pipe through the 15mm pipe?
-
It's going to be less work to take two new 22mm pipes up the stud wall if connecting at the top is straightforward.
-
It's been sitting for over a year, have you tested it to check that it still works?

Wayfair sell them. We bought wood planters from them and they have been good. https://www.wayfair.co.uk/garden/sb1/metal-planters-window-boxes-c1870049-a2912~6721.html

You would need to check if there is a length limit for the waste pipe. I can't remember, but should be in the instructions I gave you. IIRC the overflow should be a straight run.

Slimline units for loft
Gone West replied to Wagas's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Genvex manufacture longer thinner units which can be installed horizontally or vertically. I'm sure they can be found cheaper from elsewhere. https://totalhomeshop.co.uk/shop/vclose2.asp?prd=79760&cat=817002852 -
Recommendations for a Bug Zapper

Very rarely see bats any longer around here, nor that many insects. The orchards and fields are often sprayed. When we used to drive after dark the front of the car was always covered with moths. It's no longer the case. -
It doesn't taste salty.

Your experience isn't the same as ours and we have been using water softeners for over 25 years. The unit should be set up by the supplier to take account of the hardness of the water in your area. Did you measure the hardness yourself or did the supplier use your postcode to determine the hardness? We use liquid detergent which we dilute 50/50 with water in the bottle. We never use more than the standard amount for a wash and often a little less.

There is too much regeneration waste water too lose under the floor. Could you take it to the basin waste? The overflow could just go through an outside wall.
-
I would tee into the main where it enters the house, if it is possible, and use all the existing pipework in the house. Unless you have a medical reason why you shouldn't drink softened water I wouldn't worry, Wendy is doing well on it and has for more that 20 years.
-
We use softened water for hot drinks and cooking but I use filtered hard water for my cold drinks because I have to drink a lot due to kidney stones.

Our 'studs' are I-beams and vary in spacing depending on the loads on the structure.

Single Room Air Conditioner or similar
Gone West replied to Ferdinand's topic in Other Heating Systems
If you had a ground floor ventilated underfloor space could you dump the warm air from the unit into that rather than through a gap in the window.- 64 replies

Small ASHPs / Units primarily for DHW
Gone West replied to Conor's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
We use the Genvex Combi 185LS to heat the DHW to 45C which seems to be very efficient. There are only two of us but being retired we are at home most of the time. As Jeremy said we bought ours from Denmark and IIRC saved over £3000 and still reclaimed the higher VAT rate. The only downside to that is, if there is a fault with it, the supplier wants it returned to Denmark for repair. Of course there maybe the Brexit effect after October.
