A survey suggests that 53.4% of Buildhubbers WANT to see a rise and fall shower head..... -

You mean the rise and fall shower head! Just looking at a salvaged flow switch in the shed actually. Wondering if it could trigger the rise/fall mechanism and the LED halo set in the ceiling... It could still happen! -

A big factor in him leaving home was a working bathroom I suspect! SWMBO in there now putting "womanly" touches to it: Seems we're waiting for No.1 son to come home before the shower gets christened. What next? - Mirror (& demister pad) - Posh, chrome toothbrush charger thing - Cupboard light - Cupboard skirting - The body dryer - The extract take off for the wc - Loo roll holder - The proper door I'm intrigued by these "magnetic" door locks I read about on here. Too late to have gone off invisible hinges. Ventilation is a must as there's nothing in there at the moment. Still thinking home brew, single room MVHR. -

SWMBO kindly sprayed the grout sealer this morning so luckily it's been a day we can have all the windows open. The can says wait 24hrs before using as a wet room... Potentially then the shower can at long last be tested/used...HONESTLY! (Trying to get them to wait until my lads back from university as we joked my daughter was to have the first bath, my boy the first shower, me the first use of the wc and SWMBO gets to clean it!) So whilst it all looks pretty inside, outside is a different story! One ropey old drain "grate" that feeds into the cess pool via clay pipes. Coming in from the left is the old, (white) waste from the upstairs entrance suite. The bath used to tee into that but exits now at that bend under the tee: A bit concerned at the angle of the 2" waste for the shower I think is a bit steep (though Nick reckons its OK): As a temporary solution (my temporary ), all the black, solvent weld is just shoved together with silicon grease case I'm ever in a position to re-render the walls smooth and possibly EWI. (You can see where this window used to be a door, I've still to try and remove the old footings for a long since demolished, pre us, side extension so I can level this ground up the side of the house). Eventually this old grate to be replaced with a gulley(?) or whatever needs be but set a bit lower. -

Plaster is being rationed in West Lancashire......
Onoff replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Plastering & Rendering
I've read elsewhere that ref the shortage, quality is sometimes going down with board edges being malformed. Allegedly British Gypsum are not taking/returning cells on the supply issues. The official line is there's no shortage per se just high demand for the product. -

Small victories! On a serious note I'd urge you to have a go a plastering. It's oddly gratifying though my attempts leave much to be desired. Just done this bathroom cupboard and a smidge of Easy Fill was used after a going over with the Mirka sander. Basically I can get it on but it's the finishing off I fall down on. Big areas are easier too I think. I'd say good lighting is a big must. I plastered the cupboard in less that ideal lighting (aside from the space constrictions). When I went back with better lighting it showed. Good eyesight helps too! Wish I had a mentor I could work with to show me how. Did consider a course once. Surprisingly physically demanding too. -

Well it is only a cupboard... -
I've always used twin and earth for my speaker cables! If we get the lounge/diner knocked through then I'm insisting the Technics/Pioneer/Wharfdale separates get set up again and made a feature!

Looks crisp. Well done to Craig, finding that skirting! ?

Self builder? Learn how to skim in front of an avalanche ( AnonymousBosch May 2019) -
Mr Cheapseats here but I haven't stopped using the set I put into the bathroom ceiling since I put them in. https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Kitchen-Wireless-Bluetooth-Amplifier-2x-White-165mm-6-5-Inch-Ceiling-Speakers/18003051144?iid=123069555028 Amazed at the quality tbh as I'm pretty sure a fully tiled bathroom isn't the best place acoustics wise. I tend to listen to trance, progressive house, edm etc. Maybe that lends itself.

Previous to this I've always used the multitool with a standard blade as you say. Going to give it one more go on a piece of scrap. What makes it worse is I bought two singles and two doubles - a set for my chippy mate. I'll be returning the 3 unopened ones to CPC if I can.
-
I thought the very same about multitools. My proper, apprenticed, chisel sharpening, hand plane wielding, veneer applying, cabinet making chippy mate lent me his for a job. I thought he'd gone mad and it was an unwieldy tool for bodgers. I was amazed and now have two cheapos. Both corded, a Draper and a Lidl Parkside. Haven't stopped using them tbh and surprising how accurate you can be especially if you cut with the blade against a clamped on wooden block to keep things dead square. The concept took a bashing yesterday mind when had to move one double socket that meant cutting for a new dry lining box in 3/8" pb. I tried my new Triton back box cutting tool from CPC...epic FAIL, just useless and then some. Might try in my mates 18V Dewalt in case the oscillation is "better".

Fitting an undermount sink to granite
Onoff replied to Lesgrandepotato's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
Lots of how tos on YouTube: I searched: "fitting undermount sink to granite worktops" Like the idea of fitting a bit of timber secured through the plug hole. -
Less dusting with MVHR! What are your ventilation plans out of interest?
-
Welcome. It's good here, honest! To add my twopence worth. I dont live in a passive spec house & don't have MVHR. I WOULD though in a heartbeat. I've only visited one build here that's super airtight but that was pre the MVHR being commissioned from memory. The ducting was in place so there was some throughput of fresh air. This at the same time as being super insulated/warm and super quiet. It just felt right. Come back to this: "You only pay for insulation once, you pay for "fuel" forever". To not set out to achieve the best air tightness possible on a new self build is utter madness. All those little holes add up in terms of heat loss aside from comfort issues. Maybe visit a build or two locally with the MVHR up and running. I wish SWMBO here understood the "fabric first" concept. Just put together £500 worth of IKEA wardrobes and a new carpet. The failing flat roof above is crying out for attention. She wasn't overly impressed when I said we should have spent the money on roofing felt.

Look at the picture on the fedge link, immediately under where it says Why A Willow Hedge? You'll see they've formed terraces retained by fedges. The willow saplings of the fedge are woven/criss crossed and are obviously rooted. A super strong, natural retaining wall. A real art by the look of it but not a solution if you want "instant" gratification! As for the sleepers...dig a hole, drop in sleeper. Maybe ram with pea shingle around the sides and bottom rather than concrete. I'd STILL be digging a test hole to assess the ground.

There's geeks and there's geeks! ? Does the computer still work and boot up in Windows?

Of course if you show your missus it's your own fault!
