Urgent MVHR help needed
Onoff replied to vivienz's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Should you lot with ASHPs not be considering fitting SPDs (surge protection devices) from the off to protect all that delicate, expensive electronic gubbins? What's is going to cost, £70? Hager Guide to Surge Protection.pdf I've a couple of dead fax machines here that suggest I should! ? -
Cool air around double glazed windows
Onoff replied to H F's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Basicslly DG fitters of old were on a price so it was bish, bash, bosh as quick as. Surveyors would under measure so the window fell in with no drama. Fitters just covered the huge gaps with trim. No foam or Compriband. (Check out White Gold on Netflix ? ). Have a look at what I did wrt my bathroom DG window. Nov 9 onwards. Miles better than it was but I wish I had removed the window and brought it further in. No draught now but the air space can still feel cold near the window. -
This is a good tool if ever you're in Lidl: http://offers.kd2.org/en/mt/lidl/peGjj/ It'll take standard tubes as well as grout. Using mine recently for pointing with 4:1 mortar. All the parts are interchangeable with the Roughneck mortar gun from TS. Same factory clearly just the TS aluminium body is longer.

Options for Insulating suspended timber ground floor
Onoff replied to AdamSee's topic in Heat Insulation
1 - I hate cutting celotex, the dust goes every where and it would have to be done outside this time around because the house is not occupied. Surely if the house isn't occupied that's better for cutting it inside? -
Polished Concrete Worktops: Snog, Marry , Avoid: and why?
Onoff replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
Erm...a lot of it isn't a case of should you do something but can you do something just for the technical challenge and satisfaction. -
I'll be ripping the joists out in my lounge /diner and building back up to finish at a 100mm slab. The dining room is a suspended timber floor. The lounge is some mish mash make up of a concrete slab with joists on top. More digging! I think @oranjeboom dug his whole ground floor down deeper.

@Jeremy Harris could probably tell you the heat loss % to ground for different materials. It can be quite sobering and an education.
-
50mm will "work" but you'll just suffer more heat loss through the floor. I've 150mm of pir on top of 25mm eps. Some have 300mm of eps!

Going to re title the thread "rust removal" as it's getting away from electrolysis now. It's cold out there, frost on the car one morning but I'm really pleased with the results so far for minimal effort of 9kg of citric acid in a bath full of water! No heating etc since the initial 3 hot buckets. I will take the jet wash to it one night to hopefully deal with any stubborn paint:

Polished Concrete Worktops: Snog, Marry , Avoid: and why?
Onoff replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
The vids I've watch they cast the slab upside down in a shallow box with smooth faces. All internal corners are caulked to give radiussed edges. Mesh laid in halfway thru the pour. -

Dealing with leftover materials. Who legally owns it?
Onoff replied to Wagas's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
In my mates T&Cs he actually wrote "remove all materials deleterious or superfluous to the fix". My firm supplied him as our subbie with bespoke steel parts and fixings usually with a 10% contingency. He'd take all the leftovers off site and store in his container. Next job came along where we had forgotten to supply something he likely had it in his container. Saved him time coming back to us through official routes. Not saying that other deleterious and superfluous stuff accidentally made it's way off site on occasion... -

G'teed someone would have taken that pir off your hands if you'd have advertised on Freecycle etc. -
I think @jamiehamy & @Tennentslager both used EDPM for their complete roofs without issue. Check out their posts.

It's not your regular mix for this. Something like: https://concretelab.co.uk/products/gfrc-concrete-worktop-premix-kit -
Thanks. I should add that his set up is more like in the photo below where the white line is the wall with the stub of the existing waste projecting: He's a bit of an, "everything's against me / I've had a Hell of a time / I've had to buy more bits" panicker tbh. I'm about to give him these bits as they're already cut and ready to go. OK to go with this rather than x2 45s?

Tonight George had another go at positioning the wc relative to the existing soil. Ignoring my suggestion above, having the soil level with the frame he moved it even further left! I'm now going to give him the cut down Geberit black elbow, Geberit adaptor and Floplast elbow that I mocked up for him when trying to advise him remotely. @Nickfromwales, does this below meet with your approval? Also is it OK to cut the grey soil sticking out of the wall flush? A couple of things concern me; first he's a rather big, lad circa 21 stone so he'd best be fixing this properly! Second the Floplast fitting has the ribbed rubber flanges that push inside the 110mm pipe. Cheers

Sounds like she needs a hobby!

So my mate started with this intending to fit a Geberit wall frame (excuse the repeat pictures): As aforementioned I went to the trouble of mocking something up at home with a spare frame: With the soil in line with the frame it all works: He was moaning he always burns his leg on the rad when sitting on the wc (see first pic above) so moving the wc left alleviates that and it all works. He's sent me pics today. Moaning that he can't for love nor money get a soil adaptor to fit to go from the Geberit to wall soil connections. I explained he needs to move the wc further left: I explained he needs to move the wc further left to which he says "I can't becasuse I want a 500 wide sink and the door will hit it!" Told him to move the Geberit frame left a bit more and rehang the door which he hadn't thought of. No doubt there's a Geberit "straight" pipe available instead of the black right angled one but whatever's quickest at this point! EDIT: Guessing maybe this is the sort of thing that could replace the black elbow that comes with the frame: https://superbath.co.uk/5671/geberit-straight-connector-set-for-wall-hung-toilet-excentered-by-5-cm?number=ISI150104&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6PTMwqjk5QIV1OJ3Ch0zMgJIEAkYCSABEgIdvPD_BwE

Surely if the seat is the width of the pan then if you go for the same style of "lid covers seat", the lid will be wider than the pan and overhang? Options available where the lid is the same width as the pan. I think where lid covers seat is more hygienic. Is this an indicator that you're at the end of the build, that SWMBO can now worry about trivial stuff like this? ?
-
Never thought about the issue...until now! Don't think I could have even said whether the lid covered the seat etc without having looked. It does and the seat is smaller than the pan: I'm going to be conscious of my visible rim from now on!
