  1. According to JSHarris's last post, he's left and won't be back. His blog is being moved to mayflower.eu (it's far from complete).
  2. Why would you need to get a competent person to design the piling mat, surely that should be done by the piling company, after all it's their kit, their work method, their risk assessment and their risk? By all means point out the requirment and ask them how they intend to address good practice.
  3. I'm wondering if the weak Pound has affected the cost of importing the complements for insulated foundations, if so by how much? I will be ordering mine soon and want to understand the cost implications. Also is anyone seeing timber frame prices rise, it was reported on Radio 4 yesterday that timber prices have rised by 17% post Brexit!
  4. I'm going to dig three trial pits as my neighbour tells me I'm likely to hit bedrock at around 1.5m, so I might not need a soil report. I'll ask the. SE what he needs specifically.
  5. Hilliard has asked fir a soil survey for our site in order to design the foundation slab. is there a specification for such things and can anyone recommend anyone able to undertake this work in the Lancashire/ Cumbria area?
  6. Anyone spotted any decent desktop computers ?
  7. Sorry, I should have said, no gas, only electricity and mains water, the pressure is ok. I had in mind something electric and small, as the cabin is small, well insulated and space is limited.
  8. I have a small cabin with three hot water outlets, a kitchen sink, bathroom sink and shower hot water inlet. Can anyone suggest a suitable inline instantaneous water heater that can deal with these three outlet requirements?
  9. Does he really do an inspection?
  10. So if the builder zero rates the lot, need I worry?
  11. I have planning approval for a main house and a garden room (actually a four roomed annexe). If my reading of the VAT reclaim document is correct, I can only reclaim the VAT back on the main house and not the separate annexe. However, if a builder does work in the construction of said annexe, is this zero rated?
  12. Peter, the price is just for the labour, all the materials are supplied by me.
  13. Ed, thanks for the information link, very useful. Has anyone got any suggestions as to how much I can expect to pay for slating a roof area of 68m2. My first quote suggests a price of £2200, it sounds a lot to me!
  14. Was anyone got an details on how to set out a deminishing course roof?
  15. I've had a couple of roofers out to look at pricing a new slate roof, the planner wants random width, deminishing course, so as to fit the local vernacular. Having got the quotes back they talk of slate sizes - 18s, 16s, 14s and 10s. Could someone enlighten me on what size these numbers equate to?
  16. It's a pity this thread died on the vine. I like ryder72 will be starting on site to do the demolition, site clearance, groundworks, site preparation and foundations. I'm also a bit of a loss on what level of information is required by those tendering? Also is there a standard contract that covers that standard sort of stuff?
  17. I know its been discussed before, but I'm blowed if I can find the discussion. So, where can I get the best price on airtightness tape?
  18. I was after the Black Ash mentioned by others previously in this thread. I'll have a look at National Plastics and see if they do anything similar. edit. Talked to National Plastics and their internet prices as cheaper than the local depot. However, they are £1.50 a length more expensive than Eurocell and can collect it myself, thus saving delivery charges.
  19. Isn't that called a "cartel" and illegal?
  20. Having visited my local Eurocell branch, I got the feeling that the rate of discount was based on the 'fit of your face' ! For the 150mm wide x 18mm thick black ash barge board I was quoted £27.89 per 5m length. For the 250mm wide x 18mm thick black ash I was quoted £40.20 per 5m length. Are these prices right?
  21. American side by side whirlpool fridge freezer, the worst thing we every bought. It broke down at least once per year. The ice and water dispensers being nothing more than party novelties. Our other regret was the main contractor, looked good and came highly recommended. the highlight was the day the main contractor went bust.
  22. The piece specifically mentioned food and suggested that due to very low margins and every food retailer being in the same boat, they would all have to crease prices. I was wondering about imported building materials, fixtures and fittings etc.
  23. I read in the paper that costs are likely to rise within twelve months due to the slide in the value of the Pound, with imports costing around 10% more. Thoughts?
  24. A bit of history XV625 : RN d/d May68 829 Sq Phoebe Flt/471-PB Nov 1968 to Dec + To RNEC Manadon by Apr 1984 until at least 1992 To RNAS Culdrose early 1995; to A2735 Lee-on-Solent by + Sep13 declared to DSA for sale 20oct14 on sale by MoD-Sales
  25. I was thinking about attachments for mine, I have a huge pile of logs that need splitting. This looks a good idea...
