Ha, I meant not overheated ? -
Soil pipe across neighbour land broken by them
joe90 replied to ashthekid's topic in Waste & Sewerage
+1, order a few curry’s! ?. A few years ago my sisters garden started filling with poo from neighbours, (badly designed shared sewer) the water board initially refused to respond, she called environmental health and they “instructed” the water board to attend or be summoned, they were there within hours ? -

The trouble is we are all getting (got) soft, when these draughty leaky houses were built they were considered better than what existed before (caves?) . Everyone now expects to walk around their house wearing little in the way of clothes and in temps of 21’ or above. Central heating is treated as a norm. I grew up in a house with one open coal fire, heavy bed linen and a jumper when it was cold and frankly I believe more healthy. ah, but we had it tough, had to lick road clean etc etc ???? -
Exactly, and wot I dun (with knowledge of my building inspector). Note, I used rockwall full fill batts. Perhaps the regs are intended for vented cavity.

Thanks for that compliment. This may be news to you but this is a build forum, mostly people building their own house,( like I did) maybe upgrading which means increasing insulation and airtightness by many degrees. This is not existing housing stock. If this were a heating forum and people were talking about heat pumps replacing gas combis in un modified houses with existing radiators then you may have a point @Dave Jones a question for you, did you have a heat pump installed in “existing housing stock “ with no upgrade in insulation or airtightness? Was you’re heat pump designed and installed correctly for the DHW usage of your family and the heat load calculated correctly? I think not, hence your negative viewpoint on ASHP,s many here have successfully installed heat pumps and are pleased with the results many here do not have access to mains gas.. here endeth the lesson. ? -
I always tell people to source tradespeople through recommendation, friends/neighbours/family “I used this bloke and he was good!”.

Depends how low you want it, when I fitted my Sisters kitchen (she is vertically challenged ?) I lowered one section by cutting the kickboard in half and used blocks not standard legs, she tells me it works well. Can’t do it if white goods are involved in that section.

@tillywiz, sorry you had such a bad experience, yes there are cowboys out there, I was simply saying not all trades people are bad but the good ones are hard to find. My builder is booked for the next two years and because he is so good customers are willing to wait.

Whilst I agree there are lots of cowboys there are good builders out there (but I am retired ?). My main contractor and his guys were very good on my build, can’t fault their work.

That’s a complete rip off. Your quote should have specified what they were going to do (replace lead etc). Get someone to give a proper quote and say it’s not done properly then send a copy to the cowboy. I hope you have not paid yet?

Major Issues Octopus App
joe90 replied to canalsiderenovation's topic in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Design Concepts
Ha, join the club, I don’t do apps, phones are for talking (and maybe texts) ? -
I do think she has sorted it out now tho. Regarding going E7 I think it was @SteamyTea (who had logging access to my usage) to say in my case it would be marginal wether a benefit or not but will consider it a “plan B” in case circumstances change. i do remember Jeremy Harris saying smart meters needed a mobile signal so may not work everywhere anyway.

Didn’t @canalsiderenovation have octopus go? And had problems with double charging?

+1 fir glulam but not I joists.

I dislike external pipes on houses and on my new build we put a gulley outside but the gulley had sockets for 50mm pipe below ground level so I installed a 50mm pipe from under the sink, down into the floor, then out through the wall below ground level onto the gulley socket.

Code RED - the end maybe nigh!
joe90 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Environmental Building Politics
what I meant was at the beginning of the pandemic when we didn’t have a vaccine I wondered if it would escalate and have taken out a large percentage of the population like the Black Death etc. Then again if it had happened many years ago before modern medicine etc was so effective I wonder what the total death toll would have been? -

David Attenborough has been saying this for years, I did think perhaps Coronavirus was the Gaia principle protecting the planet? -

I concur with @ProDave above, rather than question your intentions re your book I will tell you of our experience, I have recently installed (myself) an ASHP in my new build. The build is passive esk, I.e. following their principles but no certification. Although a traditional build with brick and block insulation levels are high, airtightness also is fairly high and the small 5KW heat pump is all that is required. I do have to admit we installed a wood burning stove ? but this is to burn our own harvested wood and used rarely, we do live in a very rural area and this stuff would have gone on a bonfire if not used in the stove ?♂️. I decided against PV as FIT was withdrawn before our completion date. I run a diesel car doing less than average miles but believe scrapping it to buy an EV is a waste, but I am sure EV will be my next car. -
No one can be sure but differential settlement is not unheard of, I would just re point it and keep an eye on it, if it tends to move anymore or seasonally I would point it with non setting mastic so it can give a little.
-
Concerned but not paranoid. Good to keep an eye on it but not the end of the world. Is the crack only in the pointing or are bricks broken?

Code 3 is not paper thin, it’s 0.5mm thinner than code 4. What is Code 3 lead? Code 3 lead is the thinnest gauge of lead used in commercial roofing and is suitable for light applications such as soakers at the abutment..
