Yes as long as they are “stone” blades or diamond blades.

Yes, mass (heavy stuff) is also good for sound insulation, the only thing I would do differently on my build would be to double board the ceilings (between floors) and/or sound rails (to disconnect boards from frame.) use ALL the space you can for heat insulation (400mm?).

I laid a patio on sand many years ago (before I came here and learnt how to do things properly!), and after a year or so the sand washed out and it all collapsed !, even my block paving I had installed on my new build was not laid on sand but on granite chips, (over type 1) builder told me they don’t wash out or sink like sand and he always does it this way now,

On the subject of heating with bodies (human and animal) when I climbed Mont Blonc back in my youth the mountain huts were purely heated by bodies and cooking. With wood stoves, as @ProDave says a marmite subject, I have one purely for asthetics and very cold weather, lovely feature and lovely to watch on a cold night but it’s room sealed and I only burn coppiced wood from our own site.

Nah! Piece of cake for you mate, as @Marc says you are just stopping the soil erosion (stopping the soil falling out from under the corner stone that will be very big). Have you got any stone?, scrape out about 2-3 inches of the soil and replace with a little stone wall up to under the corner stone, bit of Mortor between the stones and it will match the cottage walls ?

Very much so, yes , exactly what I did ?

I put 200mm insulation under my slab, no UFH upstairs in bedrooms but electric UFH with electric towel radiators in bathrooms on timers. Yes bedrooms can be a tad cool in mid winter but the odd plug in radiator is fine (IMO) for that odd occasion. Why so many zones? No insulation between them!. My ground floor is one zone controlled by one room stat in the hallway. Flow within the lounge loop is greater so it’s slightly warmer as this is where we sit in the evening. Although I followed passive ideas mine is not up to passive levels, I concluded the cost of UFH (water) was not justified by the odd occasion it would be used.

Never got round to doing mine ?♂️

Yes out of sight, out of mind. Good chain to ground anchor and insurance, you can only do so much.

Bungalow Conversion - Brickwork/Cavity Insulation
joe90 replied to richo106's topic in Brick & Block
I think having rigid insulation within a cavity is it’s difficult to seal the sheets together, if you are removing the outer brick skin you could stick the insulation to the inner brickwork, sealing the joins with foam then get your builder to add the outer skin. If you are renewing the outer brick skin is your foundation wide enough to give you a greater cavity? If not then insulating inside is your only option. You may already know this but if you did demolish and re build you can clams the VAT back on everything. (and give you the bigger cavity for insulation like I did, I had 200mm rockwall batts). -

Mobile Phone Reception issue?
joe90 replied to ashthekid's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
Resurrecting this thread as I have now changed to EE and although a little better I still have border line signal. Rather than instal a land line and use wifi calling has anyone bought (a reasonable priced) signal booster they can recommend? -
However your making an effort, not like some who simply rely on others to do things for them and not help themselves. Look back on what you have done with a little help from others here on the forum. Frankly I like helping others with the little knowledge I have gained from others in the past. I have leant soo much from members here despite being a retired builder myself. Every day is a school day.

A warm roof is insulated at rafter level (like mine), yes the volume of the house is larger so will affect the overall u value but I wanted a usable loft storage space and find it works fine as long as your insulation is adequate.

What choice HW tank for cottage renovation?
joe90 replied to Caddy's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
Depends if it was built with modern damp proof courses in floors and walls, also the occupants with cooking, showering etc will give off some moisture. -
Wot e said above, if it’s going to rain lots just put some plastic over it but drizzle will actually help. Remember concrete/cement goes off chemically not by drying. If your worried about walking on it leave till tomorrow (but stepping carefully in the middle of the slabs will be ok) ?

Fit stepped flashing before all slates are fitted?
joe90 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Just read this again, the soakers are supposed to go under the slates as they are laid so nails won’t go through the slate ?. Nail first soaker (at the bottom), first slate on top, second soaker nailed (overlapping the first slate at the bottom but under the second slate). Hope this makes sense?. edit. Just watched that vid, I run soakers up to the next batten which has no slate (yet), I was taught this donkeys years ago so not saying it’s right or wrong. -

Yes grind it out after battens fitted (so you have somewhere to stand on). Yes I prefer to head nail the soakers, the saddle is difficult to make so buying that one is a good idea. -

Well if she can do better, let her get on with it (don't quote me please ?) -

I am not a roofing pro but have done this more than a few times!!. Option b would be my choice. -

Just spotted this on Facebook. no idea if they are worth buying (I am having second thoughts on installing solar panels on my garage roof), any thoughts? https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2230894377040469/?ref=browse_tab&referral_code=marketplace_general&referral_story_type=general&tracking={"qid"%3A"-7457114905659575444"%2C"mf_story_key"%3A"989411762954211650"%2C"commerce_rank_obj"%3A"{\"target_id\"%3A989411762954211650%2C\"target_type\"%3A6%2C\"primary_position\"%3A12%2C\"ranking_signature\"%3A4657924446630182912%2C\"commerce_channel\"%3A501%2C\"value\"%3A3.6969602021223e-5%2C\"upsell_type\"%3A3515%2C\"grouping_info\"%3Anull}"%2C"lightning_feed_qid"%3A"-7457132703882353164"%2C"lightning_feed_ranking_signature"%3A"2156245647571812352"}

Why? It’s your build!, (unless your founds are already in?).
